Berbatov

Its finally happened.

Everton's completion of the deal for Lars Christian Jacobsen this morning leaves us as the only team in the Premier League yet to make a new signing. Who would have seen that coming after the season we just had?

fredthered...

Another parrallel between this and the Ronaldo saga.

I find it amusing so many people think Spurs are stupid or out of line making this threat when SAF made the same one to Madrid. And there were hundreds of people on here who thought it was a good idea - people saying we should sell him to Barca for tuppence instead. But now we are on the receiving end of it, things seem to look a little different.

For Spurs this is a matter of principle, as it was for us. Good luck to them, I say.
Thing is, when have we during this whole saga mentioned Berbatov by name? It's been fairly obvious that it is Berbatov, but Fergie's only mentioned him once, and that was when he was misquoted, alerting Spazziel Levy and making him accuse us of tapping up.
Real have, since we won the Champions League, been speaking of how Ronaldo would improve their squad, Ronaldo this, Ronaldo that.

It stuns me how people can find similarities in these situations. And still, even if they were identical, fans are fickle, what's new?

Anyone who says we don't need a striker is either taking the piss or an idiot.

We only have two. If neither is fit - as was the case against Newcastle - we don't have any, and end up having to do stupid things like play an unfit Rooney or start a kid like Campbell. That's why Fergie's usually aimed to have four good strikers at the club. Obviously.

Of course injuries will come - that's exactly why you need a deep squad. We currently have great depth in defence and midfield, and no depth up front. That's why Fergie's trying to sign Berbatov. Berbatobviously.
Amen to that.

It is Manuchobvious that another striker would be a very useful addition to the squad but whether that person has to be Berb is another question. If we cant get the right player then I think it would be better to wait until January than get held to randsom.

We signed Petrucci

Considering that we are only going to add one player this summer I don't mind if we pay the United tax just to get the player we need. And Fergie is so stubborn that when he sets his mind on someone he won't even have a look at other options. So it will be Berba or nothing.

There have been other summers which we have not signed anyone, so it doesn't come as a that much of a surprise - ESPECIALLY after the season we had.

Just at the moment, the team looks like it's missing Ronaldo and Nani more than it's missing a top cock striker like Berbatov.

With both, we'll be incredible.

It amazes me that people cant see similarities - and then come up with differences to prove there arent any.

There are obviously differences. But the similarities are that there were players who wanted - quite openly - to move to a specific club, and a club that didnt want to sell. And that to me is the most important element of this whole thing. Sure, SAF has shown more class than Calderon did, and that is a good thing. But if Spurs dont want to sell THEIR player for less than £30m then that is their prereogative, just like it was ours to not want to sell for any price. The buying club should accept that (as it seems the club has - though the fans seem to be finding it harder).

I am not so much making a criticism of United for wanting a very good player from a rival or for how the club has conducted itself, which seems to be above reproach. I am defending Spurs' right to tell us to feck off.

Plech has more or less said that he wants to suck off Wayne Rooney. I don't know if that makes him a muppet, or if he's sick, or evil, but I'm guessing all three.

Why? I still think we need someone inside the box, right now Fletcher is the only one that operates inside the box running behind the defenders that Rooney and Tevez pulls away by not being in the box. The box.

Rooney kept on making runs between and behind the defenders yesterday.

Did you not watch the match?

I thought our midifeld did pretty well yesterday. Fletcher, Scholes and Anderson are all better than decent, and John O'Shea also played.

He did, but he was often not there when he was needed. Many times Tevez received the ball deep and had noone to pass it to in an advanced position... though actually it's usually Ronaldo etc. that make that up by running from deep.

He kept making runs when our defenders hoofed it forward. Until he got enough of that and started making gestures towards Rio. Only noticed him inside the box 2 or 3 times when he caused Pompey some trouble.

Not the right balance though. It was a make-do midfield.

A centre midfielder on the right, a defender in the middle and a centre midfielder on the left.

It did ok, because they are all good footballers, who knows what is required and has the ability to adjust the game as well as keeping possession.

C'mon fergie pay the 30m, then its done and we can get on with destroying every team in europe.
That 3-5m were stalling over could prove largely insignificant in the long run.
(I believe it will)

Why? Because the midfield is too static, and if Rooney and Tevez are both fit, that's our biggest problem. We rely on wingers to inject a bit of creativity and dynamism because most of our central midfielders are sitters. Fletcher is making up for this a bit, but most of the rest don't get forward enough. Anderson should do more.

Fletcher is the only one in our team who gets himself into scoring postistions. That is quite worrying.

No, Fletcher is the only one who has scored.

Rooney could have had a hat trick yesterday.

Anderson could/should have scored.

Evra had a decent chance.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. You just made it sound like we can't currently field a 'decent' midfield four, which of course we can.

Though, being a gimp, you said 'midifeld'.

Well, he scored a good goal for starters, and could have scored another two, if his finishing had been sharper.

Not many chances considering our dominance of possession.

Midifeld is the new, modern term for midfield.

Confuses the hell out of the opposition, especially when O'Shea is part of the midifeld.

Before i may have thought differently. but after tonight i tend to agree. 30m? feck that lets stick with what weve got and wait for benzema.

Don't know if this has been posted yet.

Dimitar Berbatov's agent is in London for crisis talks as the player attempts to force a move to Manchester United from Tottenham, BBC Sport understands.

Emil Danchev met boss Juande Ramos and chairman Daniel Levy on Tuesday in a bid to thrash out the striker's future.

Berbatov was left out of Saturday's loss to Sunderland due to a "lack of focus", while his relationship with his team-mates appears to have broken down.

However, Spurs insist the 28-year-old will not leave for less than £30m.

The London club are threatening to let Berbatov "rot in the reserves", according to reports, rather than sell him for less than they believe he is worth.

That is despite the fact that the situation has clearly unsettled the club, with defeats to Middlesbrough and Sunderland erasing early-season optimism from fans, and reports of a training ground bust-up involving the Bulgarian adding to pressure on the club.

But Tottenham's position has been made more difficult by the fact that no offer is currently on the table for the striker, despite interest from United as well as two Spanish clubs.

At the same time, Spurs' complaint to the Premier League regarding United's conduct in their pursuit of Berbatov is on hold.

Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson confirmed to BBC Sport that the board met 10 days ago to discuss the matter, only to request more information from both clubs. That, as yet, has not been forthcoming.

In the meantime, Spurs are continuing with their efforts to strengthen the squad, with the club adamant that purchases before Monday's transfer deadline are by no means dependent on Berbatov's exit.

A busy transfer window has seen Tottenham already pay out more than £43m for the likes of David Bentley, Luka Modric, Heurelho Gomes and Giovani dos Santos.

However, the sales of Robbie Keane, Pascal Chimbonda, Younes Kaboul, Steed Malbranque and Paul Robinson, among others, mean they have recouped more than they have spent this summer.

So while Andrei Arshavin's proposed move from Zenit St Petersburg looks highly unlikely, links to other players such as Ajax striker Klass Jan Huntelaar, Radamel Falcao of River Plate and Manchester City defender Vedrun Corluka are sure to continue before the transfer window shuts on Monday.
