Berbatov

there has to be some contact between us and spuds .. not getting along according to the media but spurs will be silly to let berbatov go ( this late in the transfer window) without getting a replacement
and if they get a 20m striker , they will need the money from the berbatov deal and will be at a disadvantage as we might go back to <25m bids

think both clubs are talking over it and spurs are stalling till they get close to their signing

Am I the only one that half hopes we go and sign someone else as good or better and leave Levy high and dry.

Berbatov would be great but it would be amusing.

Has anyone noticed that one day the news from the press is positive and the next day it's negative?

Nope. I'm hoping for the same. What would make it better is, after we're done signing the other player, Barca comes in with a 17 or 18 mil bid for Berbatov. It'll be fun watching Levy squirm.

The Berb is a proven goal scorer, that's for sure.

That would be great, and I still think that Villa or Benzema would be better options in the long term.
Some posters are two-faced though, say on one hand that Spurs should feck off and finally sell him to us but at the same time get pissed off at RM for trying to get Ronaldo...

lets say we do get him. we play him up top with somebody in the hole who is that person?

the media seem convinved berbatov signing for united will be a great thing for rooney. im not so sure, given the form of tevez last year when he himself admitted he was dead on his feet and the way he started last night i think tevez is a far better player playing in that position

thoughts please.

by the way, this isnt a rooney slagging or who is best. all three will be rotated but when it comes to a big game who will get the nod when everybody is fit. for me tevez would be first name on the sheet out of the three

Berbatov on top, Rooney as second striker and put Tevez as creative midfielder like a winger for the time Ronaldo is out.

This is going to go right to the wire, and at the end we may not even get him.

Did any of you's see Lou Macari on Match Day live phone in? He's convinced we're not even interested in him due to the fact that neither Sir Alex or David Gill have come out and said "We want Berbatov".

I mean, every man and his dog knows we'd like to buy Berbatov. Right?

Dimitar Berbatov could 'rot in reserves'

Tottenham have told Dimitar Berbatov that they are prepared to let him rot in their reserves unless Manchester United, or any other club, meet their £30 million valuation

Berbatov controversially missed Saturday's defeat against Sunderland, with manager Juande Ramos declaring that the Bulgarian's "head is not right" amid interest from Manchester United.

Ramos is desperate for a swift end to the problem, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy remains adamant that is down to United to come up with an acceptable offer.

If not, Tottenham sources have insisted that the club will keep Berbatov and even prevent him from training or playing with the first team. Tottenham are also considering whether to fine the 27-year-old.

So far, United have had one bid of £20.5 million turned down and are now poised to increase their offer.

Tottenham, though, have rejected suggestions that they would accept a deal in the region of £25 million simply to bring an end to the saga. Since January, they have made it clear that any deal for Berbatov would depend on a bid that at least matched the British record transfer fee of £30 million that Chelsea paid for Andrei Shevchenko.

Tottenham have also complained to the Premier League, alleging that United had illegally pursued Berbatov over the past year, and the bad feeling between the clubs has clearly not helped negotiations.

However, it is understood that the potential sale of Berbatov will depend only on Tottenham receiving the right money for a player who cost just £10.9 million in 2006. It is a risky tactic given that Ramos clearly needs a speedy conclusion to the problem.

Tottenham have lost their opening two Premier League matches and Ramos has admitted that the uncertainty surrounding Berbatov had contributed to the club's wretched start to the season.

"We need to get this matter resolved before the transfer deadline," said Ramos. "If Berbatov goes, we will need time to sign a replacement. We want to have the best centre-forward we can possibly get."

Spurs are considering making a bid for the Colombian striker Falcao, who plays for River Plate in Argentina, while the Russians Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrei Arshavin remain options. They have already sold Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane this year and urgently need reinforcements in attack to stand a serious chance of pushing towards their stated aim of a top-four finish.

If true .Good for spurs.

The scenario you painted is a rather nice problem to have. Imagine having 3 world class forwards to rotate for 2 spots in any combination, supported on the wings by Nani and Ronaldo.

I'm not really fussed who takes that 2nd striker role, the best 2 on form should play. Right now we don't have that choice to make though.

We already had that during the treble and we would have had that if only Saha was able to remain fit. Many clubs have 4 quality strikers. AC Milan have Pato, Inzaghi, Shevcenko, Kaka and Ronaldinho and that despite being in the UEFA cup.

Spurs can't afford to leave him in the reserves and take the chance of losing out on 25 million, and no striker!! Ramos himself has stated that he need its sorting out as soon as possible so that they have enough time to left to get the replacement. The papers ran a simlar story about Ronaldo to Madrid

As Benzema seems tied up at Lyon, would it really be so bad if we paid £20m for Huntelaar instead of £25-28m for Berbatov?

Everyone is going on about Berbatov's link up play and silky touch (absolutely agreed!) but we have Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo, Nani to create, and Huntelaar would hopefully just knock them in.

At least we would be sure of having another striker, and he's not exactly a poor 2nd choice is he?

Spurs aren't a big enough club to get away with leaving one of their 2 strikers on the bench as a matter of 'principle'. This is Levy's problem, thinking that he and they are bigger than they are. They may have been in 1960 but not in the 48 years since. If he doesn't take the offer we decide to make, they're fecked. He's already cocked up thinking there'd be interest from elsewhere to drive a bidding war. Things will only get worse for them and him. He's a twat and I'm starting to have sympathy for Spurs fans.

Agreed they would be fecking themselves over more than us, the mugs...

Can be argued either way really. He plays the lead striker role well for Bulgaria, and I don't think Sir Alex would be looking at him if he couldn't (play that role). Although you haven't stated that but I'm guessing you think Berba can play the lead striker role pretty well?

Definitely. He has all of the attributes needed to be a good lead the line striker, other than real pace, and so if he can play that role well enough he can become just as important(or even more so) as the holy trinity imo.

Very impressive, especially seeing as the other strikers' that he was being compared against are all strikers who base their game completely around goals.
