Berbatov

I certainly wouldnt want the arrival of a striker to change the way Ronaldo plays. He must start from the wing though and the rest is up to him. He can drift left, right, come deep and go up front and interchange with the others. But he must not be restricted to being a target man as some people would like to use him on occasions. Leave others to that role. Ronaldo is best as a free spirit.

No, we will have 3 rotating forwards, possibly 4 with the inclusion of Campbell. A few words down the sentence you would have seen (maybe not registered) that i said we were "occasionally lacking last season". Which we were, we had no height, and sacrificed width to play a 4-3-3, in which Ronaldo totally prospered, but i can imagine there being more than a few games where we adopt our more natural 4-4-2 formation, and as we have noted Fergus saying: "something along the lines of Rooney needing to play his natural position".

Well you see. I agree with you (not the campbell point. he won't get too many chances if all are fit).
A target man up front would give us more options. He would bury some of those crosses we put in each game that lead to nothing and certainly Berbatov has the technical and physical ability to let rooney play in his natural position.

But he won't change Ronaldo's style of playing.

He is not the type of player to suddenly change his game just because of an addition up front.
Why can't you see that.
He won't suddenlty become the player to just cross the balls in without cutting into the box and shooting.

He is a goalscorer and always will be. He is not the typical winger, and will not be. And tbh I'm very satisfied with the way he played last year, why do you guys want to change that? I dont see a point in that at all?
But it won't happen anyway. He probably won't score as many goals as last season and have more assists, but that's because last year was feckin immense and we can be happy if he comes close to that again.

if he left Nani would step in instead of him and he is more of a classical winger. Then our play would change slightly, but certainly not because of a new striker.

Rubbish, he is lazier than your average winger, but, he certainly played more like a winger in the European Cup final. Which is probably why that was his best performance of last season. He was also a very effective winger the season before last, why can't you see that? I don't think he will expect to be accomodated as a striker, i don't think he will mind either; playing in space and running with the ball are also prominent aspects of his game, noted before the last two seasons.

And?
I agree with that and how did that change our system? Or how would Berbatov change that? Would Berbatov then make Ronaldo less important?

These are the points I couldnt understand some were making.

But it will be different to last season, where he was allowed to sit in the centre of the field more often than not. We were playing a fluid front three last season as well, i don't expect that to feature as much when we sign Berbatov. No doubt that he will slouch around from time to time, he always has, but i do expect that he will adapt depending on who we field and what Fergus asks him to do.

Ok, ok ok.

Berbatov will most definitely allow us to play a different system, think 2006/2007, with Berbatov instead of Saha and Nani instead of Giggs. Sound tasty doesn't it?

I don't think it will diminish Ronaldos importance, but, other aspects of his game will be utilised to their full, whereas they were not last year. I believe his goalscoring exploits, and our reliance on him as a goalscorer, took something away from his game last year. He shined when playing deeper, notably in front of Evra, but other aspects of his game were highlighted, and he still managed to score.

Why are people expecting anything to happen before Thursday at the earliest?

Berbatov is away on international duty and will not be back until then.

This thread should be closed until Thursday afternoon.

That I agree with. If Fergie wants him to change his game he probably will.
But I doubt that Fergie will, but we will see.
I mean we gotta sign Berbatov anyway first, so :D.

Very well put and this I agree on.
But it would depend on Fergie, which team he fielded, and whether he would want to change something on Ronaldo's style.

I still think that there wouldnt change much, also because Ronaldo didnt always cut in or play more as a striker than a winger last year. He always puts in crosses as well and with Berbatov there would someone with an arial threat who could use those balls better than any other united player can.
And those aspects of his game could be forced.

Brazil just got beat 3-0. Get on that next plane Andersonson. We need you as the berb isn't coming (oops, there, I let it out)

Bronze match................................................................................

Zhirkov looked a good player in the Euro's. Haven't seen much of him apart from that. Any resident experts want to fill us in?

Where did you hear that?

Same guy that told me about the Berbatov situation. He was told by someone.

As I said, there is nothing concrete in it, so I'm not talking like it's going to happen.

He's the type of player Fergie would like because of his versatility, and with Silvestre apparently on the way out, and we're not so great on the wings at the moment, a signing like this would make sense.

Do we really want O'Shea to be our cover at left back? :nervous:

Maybe Berbatov 9 is GlastonSpur, think about it. I don't think GlastonSpur has been on more than once or twice since Berbatov 9 came up.

It's a conspiracy.

Nah, Glaston got fed of of the constant "bullying", and has left this thread pending an outcome.

I wouldn't want O'Shea driving the team bus, but there you go.

A little bit of news I got today is that we could be signing the Russian Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow.

Can play left back or left wing.

There is nothing concrete, but just thought I'd mention it.

He is the lad who came out and said in a press conference we were trying to sign him (during the euros)

Wasn't confirmed or denied. Of course it could be bullshit or maybe silvestre staying meant it wasn't a pressing issue - not to mention to form of Rafael and potentially his brother

So he's either a lier and it was the player not his agent that said what he said or we were/are interested

the reason i remember so well is because his name sounds like a favorite past time for a number of you lads :)

If its true then Keano is getting warmer but he hasnt found the one he should be after yet. First Evans, now Silvestre, next should be Saha! ;)

Wouldn't it be something if Sunderland signed Silvestre this week, he played against Spurs the weekend, with Berbatov playing for Spurs, and Silvestre ends up injuring him and putting him out of action for a few months

It's like something that would happen, but here's hoping it doesn't :nervous:
