If I was a betting man I would guess SAF has said stick around one more season and IF you still want to leave, you will go with my blessing. I am not (ITK - now we all know what this means!)

Anyway is there anybody in here ITK? RE: Berbatov.

I think Ronaldo will leave when Fergie retires.

did you even read my reply?

im not saying he's crap, he's among the best players in the world right now! course he aint crap...

all im saying is that he's very likely to be off to madrid next year, what is the use of basing our whole team around someone who's not going to be here next season? its quite frankly, what an idiot would do, and fergie is no idiot...

EDIT - i'd love to see what all the ronaldo fanboys would say if we continue basing our game on him this season, only for ronaldo to go next season, what will we play next? 4-4-2? carrick and scholes havent got the legs to play a 4-4-2, 4-5-1? everyone will be up in arms if we play that...

trust me, the best thing to do this season is to bring in berbatov, gradually increase Nani's exposure in line with his improvement, and once ronaldo is off, we can replace him with Nani, and thus we can still continue playing the system we are playing now, albeit, the focus and thrust of the system wont come from the nominal wide player, but through the middle in the form of rooney and berbatov....

Agree with everything you're saying there and we definitely need to plan for a future without Ronaldo.

But if you think that signing Berbatov (or any other new striker) means we will completely overhaul the system we used last season, you're kidding yourself. Nani (or whoever)will slot into Ronaldo's position but the system will remain exactly the same.

If Fergie didn't let him go this season, whats going to change in a years time?

did you read his (ron's) interview? it was clear from that, that fergie's "talk" was more like a conciliation, rather than an arbitrary decision.

fergie knows that he's off. and we need to start planning for the team without ronaldo, because we simply cant rely on him to be here for the long term...

Berbatov fears for his Manchester United move

August 19, 2008

Dimitar Berbatov is afraid that Tottenham might ruin his dream of joining the reigning Premier League champions. According to The Times, the Bulgarian held a crisis meeting with his agent last night to try to force the deal through.
Apparently, Berbatov is scared that Manchester United might turn their attention away from him and chase Ajax’ Klass-Jan Huntelaar if Tottenham do not lower their £30 million asking price.
Meanwhile Ferguson gave Berbatov another reason to worry as he seemed to be indifferent to a new signing, insisting that his squad is good enough as it is. According to Setanta Sports, Ferguson said: “If we have to go with what we have, we will do.”
Manchester United have only added the da Silva twins and young Italian Pettruci to their squad this summer, but with the likes of Evans and Campbell returning from loan, Ferguson seems to think he has enough depth to challenge for the top competitions.

I believe the longer Ronnie is with us the less likely he is to move. A year is a long time in football. And there's no way Calderon will be there this time next year so it will be a different scenario.

My only point was simply that last season we were far more successful then previous years, and it would be silly to change the way we are playing for a future that we are uncertain of. After the Champions League Ronaldo said he was staying, a month later he was in Spain for a medical, a week later he was avoiding Ferguson, two weeks later he's in the stands chatting and joking with the rest of the guys. We the fans obviously don't know everything that takes place, if so, this Berbatov thread wouldn't have ten thousand posts.

Perhaps we should concentrate on being successful while we can, and perhaps we can create a (well deserved) reputation as the greatest club in the world. More so then Madrid.

we'll see, we know what the fascists are like, they always want the very best players, and ronaldo will more likely than not, have yet again, a stellar season...

We're already the greatest club in the world. Just that some folks don't know it

My thoughts exactly. But by consistently winning titles, English & European, perhaps players will jump at moves to United instead of favoring Madrid or Chelsea.

read my posts, im not saying we should change our system, all im saying is that ronaldo should not be the focal point of it, because he is much more likely to be in spain next year than manchester.

a lot of those "quotes" last year were conjecture and straight lies. that interview was done extensively, and it was obvious that ronaldo was well-briefed in what to say by his PR men...

Ronnie should be the focal point as he is the best player in the world. Worry about the rest when this season is finished.
By staying, Ronnie has shown that he does have some sense. By rejecting Real outright, as he has now done, the chances of him being with us longer have greatly increased.

Exactly.

i will let you all in on a little secret, i am dimitar berbatov and i won't be singing for you this year. you couldn't even beat newcastle.

And there is no other position in the squad that needs to be filled.

And I see no point spending £15-20m on a player that won't significantly strengthen us.
I would much rather spend that bit extra a get one of the few players in the world that could take us up another level.

Berbaov is one of those players Cruz is not

Spot on.

fecking ronaldo fanboys...

 feckin retarded Berbatov fanboys.
What was the bad thing about relying on Ronaldo's performances last year? That we won nearly everything?

Also what has that to do with Berbatov? He is certainly not that class to suddenly change that. If Ronaldo performs again as well as last year, we will win again. If not, well then our others have to perform, what they did last year.
Berbatov has feck all to do with that.

COuldnt care less if we signed him or not. He would be a good addition to our squad, certainly not something we are dependent on.

He hasnt though, has he? He's still said its his dream, and that he still wants to go...

You cant base your whole team around somebody who does not want to be at the club in the long term. Its amateurishly bad long-term planning.

Oh and for the sake's of it:

It is certainly NOT us basing our system to his kind of play. That's just bullshit.

It was HIM make us do so by outperforming everyone else on the pitch. And still if he didnt perform we still won our games. Probably not 4 or 5-0 but we won, cause the others played damn well as well!

So we didnt base our system on him.

And a Berbatov certainly won't change our system, and Ronaldo's performances won't change with a Berbatov.

All we can hope is that we can finally get him and that he show that he is worth the money and scores some goals, but he will certainly not be the one making ronaldo less important.
Nani can be that one if Ronaldo leaves.

Alright mate, you may call me a Berbatov fanboy, but you are so far off, its freaking unbelievable! if you've even seen my previous posts, you'll have seen that berbatov isnt even my first choice!

nothing was wrong with basing our game around him, this time last year, he was one of my favourite players, him being a cnut has changed my mind on him, and him not having the commitment to being at the club in the long term is what has changed my mind on him.

berbatov will change that because for the first time since ruud, we will have somebody who can give the much-needed space for rooney to work in and a body for rooney to work off of, and it will most likely be rooney, who we will base our game around when ronnie will finally piss off...

Alright that I agree with you on. He is also not my first choice.
But mate read my post above. I don't like Ronaldo's attitude neither. He is cnut tbh.
But still if he performs he will lead our game again and again. It's not that we change our system because of him, but he just is probably the best footballer in the world and so you can expect from someone like him that he will have a leading role during a game.

But Berbatov doenst have the quality to change that. As long as Ronaldo plays for us and performs he will be the one to control a game.

 if we didnt base our system around ronaldo, he would actually BE a winger, he'd would have to track back, stick to the touchline, whip crosses in, etc etc remind me, when was the last time he did ANY of that? ronaldo plays to his own tune, and the others follow it. when was the last time you saw a right winger crop up on the left wing, attacking midfield, in the hole, up front etc etc?
theres no way anyone can deny that, well anyone but you, it seems...

i dont want to repeat myself re. berbatov, so just read my last post...

That's rubbish. Our only planning this year is to make sure Ronnie gets the same service and space as he had last year. We have many in our squad for the long term. What happens next year is beyond any of us.

What are you trying to say?
If Ronnie and the team play like last year it'll be fine with me. There was a small matter of the PL and the CL. Keep on Ronnie. Keep on team.

3-4 times each game.
And there are MANY other wingers that actually don't track back too well.
But that he is not a winger in the classical sense doesnt mean we are basing our system on him does it?

But of course it will be difficult to replace him. And the main point of my argument is, that whether ronaldo or not changes our system, a berbatov can't change that.

I read through your points why Berbatov would be able to do so..... but Saha when fit didnt change that neither. Ronaldo also played the same part as always even with a target man....

I think that Berbatov will give us balance, something that despite our success, was occasionally lacking last season. Basically, he (Ronaldo) won't be allowed to hang around up-front as much as he has done, but will switch to a role in which he excels in all aspects of his game, not just scoring, which is on either of the wings (probably switching between both (with Nani)).

It will give us somebody to aim a cross at, somebody to play off and the oppurtunity to play the channels successfully as we were the season before last. I expect Ronaldo to be a rounded performer this season, hopefully contributing more in terms of assists, linking up with full-backs and showing what a fantastic player he is with the ball at his feet, and scoring 20+ in the process.

He is not the type of player to suddenly change his game just because of an addition up front.
Why can't you see that.
He won't suddenlty become the player to just cross the balls in without cutting into the box and shooting.

He is a goalscorer and always will be. He is not the typical winger, and will not be. And tbh I'm very satisfied with the way he played last year, why do you guys want to change that? I dont see a point in that at all?
But it won't happen anyway. He probably won't score as many goals as last season and have more assists, but that's because last year was feckin immense and we can be happy if he comes close to that again.

if he left Nani would step in instead of him and he is more of a classical winger. Then our play would change slightly, but certainly not because of a new striker.

i agree 100%, although, a lot of us are talking as if this transfer is a certainty to happen, and i have this bad feeling where it has gone on too long and there appear to be too many stumbling blocks.

I will love him to come because it will give us another dimension and also give rooney more freedom in his natural role, however i want to refrain from getting over excited because the chances of him coming are about even with the chance that he is staying and i dont want to have to go through the trauma of planning life with him at old trafford, for then at the last minute my dreams to be dashed and us ending up with the same problems we have had for 2 years, i cant stand seeing giggs as a SS anymore, and ronaldo playing upfront, and oshea playing in the middle.

I look at chelsea an see they have anelka and drogba to operate in this role, we need to push the boat out sign berbatov and make our squad complete, otherwise thins season we may not be as fortunate as last.

No, we will have 3 rotating forwards, possibly 4 with the inclusion of Campbell. A few words down the sentence you would have seen (maybe not registered) that i said we were "occasionally lacking last season". Which we were, we had no height, and sacrificed width to play a 4-3-3, in which Ronaldo totally prospered, but i can imagine there being more than a few games where we adopt our more natural 4-4-2 formation, and as we have noted Fergus saying: "something along the lines of Rooney needing to play his natural position".
