Berbatov

True, but if we have the cash to spend we may as well spend it on a striker.

Plus I don't think we will spend close to £30m on Tevez

Well if we consider what we've already paid :p But yes, we do seem to have at least £20 million to spend given the 'right player'.

And there is no other position in the squad that needs to be filled.

And I see no point spending £15-20m on a player that won't significantly strengthen us.
I would much rather spend that bit extra a get one of the few players in the world that could take us up another level.

Berbaov is one of those players Cruz is not

We don't know yet that Berbatov would take us up another level to be honest. Last season the Tevez and Rooney partnership was interrupted by injury and fatigue. It could be that this season both players find their form together and strike up a partnership better than any other in europe.

Of course, it would be handy to have a player of Berbatov's quality on the bench even if that happens. But someone of Cruz's quality would most likely be happier with that role.

SAF did say he would. I wouldn't doubt him - would you?

He's not above getting some things wrong. Regardless, he would enhance the squad a lot - just by having someone of that quality as a fill-in for Rooney and Tevez at worst. It doesnt mean Tevez' best isnt at least near Berbatov's.

From today's The Times:

Berbatov is still hopeful of ending up at Old Trafford

Dimitar Berbatov met his agent in Bulgaria last night to try to force through his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United. The 27-year-old forward is on international duty for the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina tomorrow night and he is worried that United will try to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Holland striker, from Ajax if Tottenham refuse to lower their £30 million asking price. “We’re entering a crucial period of negotiations,” Emil Dantchev, Berbatov’s agent, said.

Zenit St Petersburg have told Tottenham that they will not sell Andrei Arshavin, the Russia playmaker, for less than £20 million. “It is take it or leave it,” Dennis Lachter, Arshavin’s agent, said. “That is the final price.”

I like the way this thread has turned, that some people start to realise that Berbatov isn't worth all that fuss.
I would love to see him here, oh and he is quality.

But feckin hell people started to moan about rumors that Tevez' contract would cost us 30 mill, and now suddenly as the papers seem to be convinced that we want to buy a person, who wouldnt even accept it to sit on the bench once or twice, who's character isn't even compareable to Tevez', who is not as strong as young and as loyal to a club as Tevez you think it's okay to spend that fortune.

I'm not saying that he will actually cost us 30 mill, but you people's reactions are funny. We are not that desperate and Levy's us feckin Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime making a transfer as hard as possible.

Probably Mr.Burns is right and we should look for some younger players.

I agree with most of this post. The part I didn't understand was about Tevez' loyalty. He's been here for 12 months, and already mentioned his desire to play in Spain one day...and be back in Argentina before he's 28.

How long does that leave him being loyal to United? They're all mercenaries, which is why for me I'd like us to take a risk and give the youngsters a chance even if it costs us in the short run.

We should try and get Huntelaar.

We won't be any weaker if we get him as opposed to Berba

rimaldo hand party=berbatov signing. it is scientific fact. there is no real evidence for it but it is scientific fact.

Well not just as far as United is concerned he was loyal. Remember him plaiyng for West Ham? He didnt even celebrate scoring against them, he said the time with them was his best in his life.
Would you hear sth like that from ronaldo?

He said he loved it here and although he's a difficult case as far as transfers is concerned he wants to stay with us.

How does a desire to play in Spain say something about someone's loyalty?
He wasn't in the press saying he wants to leave, was he?

Why? The fee is around 18 million, the player would sign for us in a flash, it'd be as straight forward a transfer as they come

Has he not played in the Uefa Cup qualifiers? That would make it slightly more complicated.

You're also ignoring the fact that SAF has never shown any concrete interest in him, and that we will sign Berbatov.

As I don't know any ITKs personally, I guess his Spain talk was in the press. I have nothing against Tevez at all, but I just don't interpret "loyalty" as simply not handing a transfer request. He's a professional footballer who has been lucky enough to find a top club which pays top cash.

Scholes, Giggs, Ole and Neville have been loyal. For me, even P. Neville and Nicky Butt have been more loyal than Tevez and co, as they only asked to leave because they were limited to the odd appearance from the bench for a number of seasons. With all due respect Tevez would have handed a transfer request in a flash under those circumstances.

 Tevez actually did start some games from the bench last year, although he performed better than Rooney at times and made place without moaning or anything.

It's probably too early as you have mentioned to call him as loyal to United as some other players, but I'm talking generally. He had some bad games for West Ham at the beginning but gave his best all the time and in the end he kept them up.

I don't know why but there are people you already can say that they will be or are loyal and have a great character without knowing them too well.
And I have this feeling for him and I think many others as well.

And the part about the "handing in a transfer request". Well I just said that, because you mentioned that he once said that he loved spain.
He actually never said he wanted to play there, he in fact said he once wants to go back to his old club in Argentina, which is also kinda class.

Why are posts being deleted in this thread? I answered a question from Pogue, and both seem to be gone now, along with plenty of others.
