It was the midfield who killed us of, but we could also with some luck have won the game. I hoped Fergie would have replaced Carrick with Possebon, but maybe he felt that it was to soon for Possebon. I think Possebon is a great player with a calm over his play who dont reflect his age. Wonderkid anyone? :)

He plays with a zen like tranquility, it's encouraging

That's what a few people were saying, but I definitely think it is too soon. I was impressed with him in the reserves last year but in the matches in the reserves and yesterday he wasn't anything special, not that I expect him to be at this age, but as of yet he doesn't warrant a place ahead of even O'Shea.

United's First Choice Line-up

VDS
Brown Rio Vida Evra
Ronaldo Scholes Carrick Nani/Hargreaves
Rooney Tevez

Half time yesterday, and no Ronaldo, Tevez, Carrick, Nani/Hargreaves. Still United have the squad to cope with those 4 missing, but when the replacements, Anderson, Park, Nani/Hargreaves, Saha are all missing, and then Giggs being forced off, it is obvious we are going to struggle

The midfield was the problem yesterday, not the attack, but another striker is still a priority.

Good post

O`Shea should play left back or central defender. Possebon imo, is a better choice in midfield than O`Shea. Great passer of the ball and a very calm player. If he plays atleast 45 minutes, I have learned that his passing and playing style changes, he speeds up his game.

Well, Fergie's surprise was obviously a family secret. We're not going to hear anything new now till Thursday so you all need to get back to a normal life till then. (Don't forget to zip up).

I don't like O'Shea playing midfield at all either, I think he's good right across the backline but just average in midfield, but look who we're playing against next. Portsmouth's midfield are too strong for Rodrigo right now and he isn't good enough defensively yet either.

That was my point exactly. He's also capable of putting his foot through a shot from distance. You have to give youngsters a chance at some point, and what better time to do it when we are struggling with injuries? Surely he will have a hard time getting a run out when we have five fit central midfielders ahead of him.

Rodrigo and Scholes may lack to much defensively, so got to agree on that one. But I have a good feeling everything will look better soon.

A better time to do it would be when we're not under a lot of pressure, as it would just put him under unnecessary pressure. Ease him in first in cup matches, he's still only 19/20, he has plenty of time yet.

I actually think people don't give Scholes enough credit for his defensive game these days. He still makes stupid/late tackles at times but he chases down midfielders plenty and makes a fair few interceptions himself.

I'm not worried at all, I think we're more than capable of getting 7 points out of the next 9.

Scholes should have credit for his defensive game, but I see that side also with especially Tevez and Rooney. They work hard all over the pitch. But I think Scholes and Possebon may turn out just fine or it could be problems with the defensive work.

Some players thrive off of that big game pressure. Just look at Anderson and what he did away to Liverpool last season. And aside from Scholes, we have a young central midfield. The more chances he gets, the better off it will be for him to get a chance to prove himself.

Berbatov then....

will sign on Thursday I reckon.

I have prophet-like visions of him scoring a late winner at Anfield too. That would be ace.

getting back to berbatov, if we do bring him in I'd fancy we'd have the strongest bench in the premiership which can only be a good thing. It's easy to forget who we were missing yesterday

Is it? I think its fairly obvious to everyone who we were missing.

not really, we still see many disappointed people drawing at home to newcastle

If anything it shows our strength in depth, cause up until carricks injury it looked like how many.

Newcastle actually did well in fairness. With viduca and owen they'll cause teams problems if they can keep players fit.

It didn't really highlight our need for a striker, just lacking a certain directness

??? I wouldn't think anyone would be happy with a draw at home to Newcastle. And I don't think anyone would look at our team yesterday and think it was a first choice squad.

yeah but why shouldn't we be happy because as you rightly said, considering the player's we've missing and all attacking players I might add..

All you've done is said why I don't think we should be too disappointed

Some are wanking over chelsea yesterday. If Pompy put in the shift that newcastle did, it might have been a different result

additionally while we are depleted we're more likely to give fringe players a chance and that can only be a good thing because we do have one or two that could make the grade

And if they did, it'd only strengthen the squad further when the injured players return

I don't know what your point is. Mine was to argue your statement "It's easy to forget who we were missing yesterday."

my point was that yesterday did not prove we need a striker. Not on that performance anyway. All we really needed was a change of pace. Someone to run at their fullbacks and try to get in behind. We do need a striker, yes berbatov would be great but I don't think we 'lost' the game in that area. Just my opinion of course. Someone said we did.

However I also said with Berbatov we'll have probably the strongest bench in the premiership and I liked that feeling :)

Tevez not being available after a cracking pre-season was the biggest miss for us yesterday.

I was gutted when I saw his name was absent from the match squad.

I wasn't referring to just Berbatov or "New Striker X", I was also including the likes of Ronaldo (who would be more influential then Berbatov in any case), and the other absences in our squad. I thought it would be fairly apparent to everyone that we didn't field our strongest squad.

yes but people were still disappointed we didn't win, regardless of that

At our club, no one should hope for anything less then a win no matter opposition, venue, or injuries. We are defending champions and should expect to beat Newcastle at home especially after thrashing them twice last campaign.

I'm by no means panicking, or suggesting we're in trouble because we didn't claim all three points, far from that. But I just think that the majority of the fanbase will be disappointed with a home draw to Newcastle United on the opening day of the season.

I agree with the expection in general but again look at the players out. Campbell making his debut was encouraging. Rooney had missed a bit of pre season just coming back from the shits

Sometimes you need the luck and we lost that when campells header hit given on the head and bounced out.

Considering everything, we should have won the match. Newcastle were missing players, players with debuts who in fairness, excelled. We were missing 10 players and about 8 of them could have made the difference yesterday

I think we were unfortunate but it gives other players a chance. I don't know if we'd have scored if they hadn't. It seemed a brief moment of inspiration

But when you concede the goal we did, and vds make a big mistake then it will encourage them. If we'd have scored first we'd have won the game probably but newcastle were pretty solid and they did attack at times.

Think we just gotta chalk it off and hope next week pompy play crap again.

Berbatov will score against pompy

Hopefully, there is a plan B.

I would put in about a back door.. but..

ah sod it,

yeah they have put a chastity belt on us, preventing us from getting our cocks out just yet. But we are all hoping we can find a back door or passage for berbs.

If i was fergie, i would pay £15 mil for santa cruz. He's great in the air and holds the ball up well and fits our style of play. We have money in tha bank if we need it for the january transfer window. Then spurs are up shit street with a player that doesnt want to play with them! That would teach them to be greedy.
