Berbatov

I know I dont understand why he hasnt gotten a work permit yet

I think his injury is the reason why that is being held up.

The manager has said several times recently that they 'hope to apply for that within the next few weeks'.

He has a metatarsal injury, and they can take between 4-8 weeks to heal.

There is only so far you can go trying to negotiate with those not willing to do business Spoons. Time is running out, and if this is not working out we need to focus elsewhere. I hope it's a tactic by SAF to rush the transfer.

A newbie claimed that United's team walked out from negotiations yesterday - he was even willing to give the name of his source by PM.

I have heard rumours that the main stumbling blocks are Spurs insistence United pay the whole fee up-front, and Berbatov hand in a transfer request.

There's only a couple of players I see who would be on a par, or a better fit than Berbatov. I sincerely hope we do not panic buy some average player.

This completely contradicts what (the rather prematurely promoted) Berbatov 9 said last night about the deal being done.

It's strange, we are surely not working on it hard enough which basically means that Fergie doesn't expect him to be an important part of our squad next season. What's even more surprising is that we haven't been working on loaning him out for next season, it'd surely be better to do this now so that he will have time to adapt in a new country.

My understanding is we have already applied. I think what he is referring to is the actual hearing of the application, rather than the lodging of the appropriate forms/papers.

The decisions are staggered, and the length of time it takes is directly related to how clear cut a decision it is. If it is borderline, it takes a little longer. If, in the case of Manucho, it is a questionable application, then a number of reports etc will be filed, studied and so on. They may also hear evidence from the manager/coaching staff etc. People in the game are likely to be questioned about him, informally of course, and a decision is made accordingly.

That is what I have been told by my friend in London, who does know a few people within Tottenham.

I believe what he told me, and told me this a couple weeks ago. I have asked again twice recently and that is as it stands, he had no further update.

I'm only passing on the info.

Ultimately, until a players name is on contract, anything can happen. We've seen it too many times in the past.

If a disaster was to happen and it went belly-up, then I'd be the one with egg on my face, so me signing up with the name Berbatov 9, shows how much confidence I have in my friends information, but as I already said, anything can happen until a player is signed and sealed.

No he got injured just before two international matches, which, if he had played in them, would have meant he would qualify for a work permit. I think that's it.

Now we are just hoping that we can get him a work permit under the conditions of him being an 'outstanding talent' or something along those lines. That's how we got Dong.

The source of information I was referring to was from another newbie.

Berbatov9 fulfilled all the criteria deserving promotion in my book.

Ferguson hints at imminent action

Manchester United's pursuit of a striker could be about to end after Sir Alex Ferguson hinted at some transfer activity in the "next two days".

In the build-up to another title defence, Ferguson played mounting speculation of Dimitar Berbatov's signing with a totally straight bat.

That was until he tired of the questioning and opted for a different tactic.

"You might be surprised at what is going to happen over the next two days," he said.

Given Ferguson announced seven days ago he would have a new face in his squad for the Premier League opener against Newcastle, nothing should be taken at face value.

But it would be no major shock if the United boss was parading a big-money signing around Old Trafford on Sunday, even if club officials are continuing to dampen down speculation that hit fever pitch at lunchtime.

There was talk of a medical in the north-west taking place and even a spot being earmarked in the squad to face Kevin Keegan's men. The truth was that Berbatov was in London, with Tottenham, preparing to travel north for a game at Middlesbrough.

"I cannot give you an answer because there isn't one," said Ferguson, when asked whether he still expected to bring in a new player.

"We have been trying to add to the squad but nothing has changed, I have nothing else to say."

If, as expected, Berbatov becomes a United player over the next few days, he will gain an official seal of approval from Owen Hargreaves, who played for Bayern Munich in the striker's Bayer Leverkusen days.

"Berbatov is a fabulous player, who would be a fine addition to any team," said the England midfielder.

"The thing is, if Manchester United sign a player, it has to be a top player and that would be exciting for us all.

"Obviously, you can never have too many strikers, although I don't actually think we need to improve on too much from last season."

Ferguson desperately needs a striker, of that there is no doubt.

Berbatov is the preferred choice but if Tottenham wait too long before deciding whether to sell a player who clearly wants to leave, they may find United have gone elsewhere.

David Villa, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Thierry Henry have all been mentioned in recent days and it is not beyond Ferguson's ability to move fast given it is another two weeks before the transfer deadline.

For now though, the Scot must use what he has.

That means once again the emphasis will be on some of the older members of his squad, specifically Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Approaching 35 and 34 respectively, the longevity of the pair is astounding, let alone the hunger of players who have won 18 league championships between them.

"We do have to protect the old dinosaurs a little bit more but they are all fit guys," said Ferguson.

"Giggs' endurance test was the best in the club this summer, which is unbelievable. I don't know what he is made of.

"He has never carried any weight either and has always looked after himself, so he will play a lot of games for us.

"Paul Scholes is much the same, as is Gary Neville. There is plenty of football left in them as well."

Nevertheless, Ferguson needs one more experienced forward.

Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney will carry the fight against a Newcastle side which conceded 11 in two meetings with United last term and has not won at Old Trafford since 1971.

But more demanding tests lie ahead, not least in the Super Cup two weeks from now, a game which requires the postponement of a Premier League encounter with Fulham and, thanks to an uncomfortable memory, also demands Ferguson's full attention.

"Last time we reached the Super Cup I made the mistake of playing Lazio with half a team because we had Newcastle straight afterwards," he said.

"But when I saw them celebrating I was angry. They thought they had won the World Cup.

"I want to win that match and I also want to win the World Club Championship because I have never understood why the fact we were the first British team to win it - Liverpool have had five attempts - never got any praise."

 love the dig at liverpool at the end

Dong received his work permit because of the time he had spent on loan at Royal Antwerp/number of International caps he had.

I hope we bring Berbatov, but a crazy transfer would be Henry. Dont see that happens since Henry would not be able to play in the cl for us.

Hmmm, very interesting there regarding the two days quote from Fergie.

Sky/MUTV didn't show that at all today at the press conference for some reason, but the Sky Reporter did suggest that Ferguson hinted that he may have someone onboard as early as Sunday.

I'm surprised that wasn't shown you know, as that is key information.

The way Brian Robson was talking on MUTV tonight you'd swear we'd already signed Berbatov.

OT would go nuts if Berbatov was presented before the game on Sunday.

Is this absurdity, or maybe they should inform United not to turn up at the table at all?

The audio upload did not mention it too.

if we were to be surprised surely that means that we are getting someone other than berbatov because that transfer is distinctly obvious. Maybe he was being ironic with this statement though... i dunno!?

I do just hope it mind games and that we really are going after berbatov because to my mind there is no one else in the world who id rather have as a centre forward that would suit us.

That's right ya, he's doing Countdown now.

He is well in at OT though, so I'm certain would have any info with what's going on regarding transfers.

I was surprised at the way he was talking about Berbatov, as all other pundits choose their words very carefully.

Yes, like Paddy Crerand did not long ago.

Unfortunately I might have to stop. I said in here earlier that if nothing happened abotu Berbatov today, I'm supporting a different club.

Could be tricky. I don't like any other clubs. I even have a 33 year old grudge against Shrewsbury. Chelsea?

Yes, like Paddy Crerand did not long ago.

I haven´t watched MUTV for a while, isn´t Crerand against signing Berbatov?

I know Macari isn´t particularly fond of him. At least he wasn´t last time I saw him on MUTV.

Your namesakes first team...

The '2 days' remark did appear tonight - right at the end - immediately following another 'nothing to say at the moment remark'.
