Berbatov

Arshavin is 27 years old. And doesn't seem to have even been on the radar of any major clubs until this summer.

Which means if he is as talented as all that, he's been doing a decent job of hiding it.

He's not among the best players in the world, he's on the other hand a very good player who could be an excellent buy for whoever decides he's worth it.

Berbatov is of the same age and yet to play for a big club as well.

He has, however played in a CL final.

I didn't say he hadn't played for a big club I said he hasn't attracted any interest from big clubs. Not until all this recent hype about a couple of decent displays in the Euros.

We tried to sign Berbatov two years ago.

FWIW, I agree that Arshavin is a very good player. I just don't think he's good enough to play for United. Unlike Berbatov, who is.

Only because of the injury of a first-choice player.

That doesn't matter, the fact is he was in a team that was good enough to play in a Champions League final. They may not be a big team now but at the time he was with them they were considerably better than Zenit are now.

Its only 5pm if something is required from a foreign FA. Otherwise, the deadline has gone.

The Premier League rules stipulate that all the relevant paperwork must be processed and filed to the league's headquarters by noon on Friday for a transferred player to be eligible to represent his new club that weekend. In cases such as this, where international clearance from the Bulgarian FA would be required, that deadline can be extended to 5pm at the league's discretion.

Well some of the bigger German clubs were interested in him before (I think Werder Bremen?), but he didn't want to move out of Russia and it's not like Zenit are in desperate need of money, thanks to Gazprom.

He was selected the Russian League's Player Of the Year in 2000 already and Russian Footballer of the Year in 2006. So it's not like this was his first year when he actually did something.

I don't know why he hasn't been recognized outside of Russia before this year, but he has been one of the best players over there for quite some time.

James Cooper on SSN reckons Berbatov could be signed soon. He talked to Fergie and got the impression something is in the pipeline.

He said he heard strong rumours Berbatov was in Manchester but certainly not at Old Trafford or Carrington (Greggs maybe).

James Cooper worked all that out by reading SAFS body language.Other words nothing new.

How many success stories have we had with Russian exports to other leagues?

Besides a few very notable exceptions.

The SSN guy seemed to think Sir Alex body language indicated he was in a ruch to get away and get on with something.

Fergie actually said that the club were working on one or two things at the moment in the transfer market.

Be funny if we signed two players wouldn't it?

One would be fine though.

Yeah, you're right. I rewinded Sky Plus and in fairness he was just passing on gossip he heard plus some kind of telepathic understanding of what Fergie was thinking via his body language.

I give up. You have found the thinnest argument ever. EVER.

Berbatov didn't start the game, he came on because he was the only striker on the bench and the first-choice striker got injured halfway through. Had it been Arshavin, you'd say that he was not good enough to make it to the first team in such an important game.

Berbatov was 20-ish when that game was played, and not yet the player he is now. There's no shame in being a sub at that age for the second best team in Europe that season.

And contrary to your childish snipes, I don't think Arshavin is a bad player at all, rather he is just overrated. He will be a good player for a team like Spurs, but he isn't close to being good enough for us. You seem to have gotten offended that people are questioning a player who has had 13-ish good games that were visible to the European public at large. Strange that.

And I'm glad you were able to tell me what I would say in completely different circumstances-glad to know a bloke off the internet knows me better than I know myself.

We signed Tevez on a Friday before the opening day of the season.

Arshavin isn't that good, especially watching the top 4 in England hasn't taken an interest in him.

But the Tevez deal was just completed that day, most of the work has been done before, including a medical, I presume.

As for Arshavin, he's class. But we need a different type of player.

Arshavin is not what we need. His goal scoring record is awful.

I'd be surprised if it's completed today now. But in these long runners, I'm sure everything is set up to be got through quickly once the player is given permission to leave. We have enough experience of it.

It may well be, but you still have to go through the medical and all that, and it could say some time. Doesn't matter. Like you said, it's not happening today, but if Spurs do get Arshavin in the next few days, we should have Berbatov for Portsmouth.

Many worse players have played and are playing for us. His ball control, speed, passing are on a very high level. From what I've seen from him in the last couple of years, he'd be on of our best players if we signed him.

BREAKING GOSSIP

Spurs could sign Zenit St. Petersburg's Andrei Arshavin as early as Friday evening after the Russian club dropped their price tag. (setanta.com 1102 BST)

I'm not suggesting we should go for Arshavin. What I'm pointing out is that he's not necessarily as overrated as you make him out to be.

Perhaps you've seen more of him that me then. You are right, we do have worse players, but none in our first XI, and certainly none in his position, and none we have paid the guts of £20m for. He looks technically good, but at that fee, there are numerous better options IMO.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong though....

Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez and Rio are all a fair bit better than him. There are a few other ones that are debatably better too.

He'll never be good enough for us.

"Ferguson was less firm about Berbatov and the chances of him being involved against Newcastle, even though rumours are circulating United's Carrington training HQ that a deal for the Bulgarian is almost complete.

It is thought Berbatov was not at Tottenham on Friday morning and has instead arrived in Manchester for a medical."

Where's this rumours coming from? I thought he trained with Spurs again today?

Not actually any evidence of this, one way or another. The training photos of him were from yesterday.

The whole "being in Manchester" stuff, is just rumours though.

How do you know that? That he would disagree I mean, he's obviously bigger than me.

If fergie was as confident as you are that Arshavin would become "one of our best players", he would be looking to sign him, obviously. Mind you, so would all the other biggest clubs in Europe.

Any footballer who is good enough to be "one of the best players" at Manchester United has to be a fairly sensational talent i.e. considerably better than Arshavin
