Bent to Villa for £18m

Bruce seems to have excellent judgment in the transfer market. 18 Million for a 29 year old is not bad at all and surely Bruce has something up his sleeve and it probably will be Welbeck if he is prepared to let Bent go. Bruce bought a laughing stock in Bramble for 1 Million and turned him into a good defender and got Cattermole for a good price and did the same with him so he seems to know what he is doing.

Agreed, some would say he's the heir to Redknapp. There's a lot of things to admire about Bruce as a manager; he tries to bring kids through, he spends money wisely and his teams have started to play some decent passing football.

This is a bit of a weird move.

I wonder if this means that he's been given an indication that he can sign Welbeck.

Yep, he's turning into a very impressive manager. Does well wherever he goes, and not with huge budgets either.

no reason for Bent to be sold now even if he had been given the OK. Plus Wellbeck is injured now.

Think Bent wanted to leave is all.

Bruce is pretty good in getting quality players at good prices.

Just hope he does not get Wellbeck is all. :)

One has to assume Young is on his way. I know its not like for like but for Lerner to release this much cash surely means someone is being sold?

Either that or he has been panicked by the potential for relegation.

Why are people clubbing this with Welbeck's future
He is there till the end of the season. Sunderland would need a striker in this transfer window to replace Bent.
They'll use the transfer fund to get a 3rd striker (Campbell is still injured I think) rather than spending it on someone they already have till the end of the season.

He's beginning to rack up the old transfer fees is Bent. What is that, three moves over £10m now?

Bent has been poor this season.

I rate Welbeck and Gyan more highly.

Good business by Bruce.

18m pounds for a British striker who guarantees you around 15-20 goals a season seems decent business to me. He's British so obviously the price is rather inflated but in todays market that's an okay price for a proven goalscorer. Aston Villa won't care about the 18m once he starts scoring around 20 goals a season. And with Albrighton and Young delivering cross after cross Bent will enjoy himself.

Ipswich -> Charlton: 3m
Charlton -> Tottenham: 17m
Tottenham -> Sunderland: 10m
Sunderland -> Aston Villa: 18m

48m for Bent :lol::wenger::lol:

Ispwich: 47 goals in 122 games
Charlton: 31 goals in 68 games
Spurs: 18 goals in 60 games
Sunderland: 32 goals in 58 games.

Spurs apart (who din't really utilize him) I don't think any of the clubs regret the money spent on him.

If he scores the goals that keep Villa up it will be money well spent.

Admittedly it's a risk.

Exactly. It might seem a lot and it probably is but he's a proven goal scorer and if he keeps Villa up they won't give a dam about 18m.

He'll be closing in on Robbie Keane's peculiar record as the player on whom the most money is spent over the course of their career.

Surely Anelka can't be far behind?

EDIT:

Anelka > Arsenal £500k > Real Madrid £22.3mil > PSG £20mil > Man City £13 mil > Fenerbache £7mil > Bolton £8 mil > Chelsea £15 mil = £85.8 million

Keane > Coventry £6 mil > Inter £13 mil > Leeds £12 mil > Tottenham £7 mil > Liverpool £19 mil > Tottenham £12 mil = £69 million

That's a lot of money!

However for some people actually playing is more important than which club pays you however much money, who knows if this is the case here, it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

Why would he leave without actually getting a real shot? It would end up being a pretty big regret for him. He has been very good for Sunderland after an initial settling in period and has held his own against their established PL goalscorer and one of Africa's top strikers. Doing this at a club which is hardly known for it's attacking, free-flowing football is a good achievement for a young player like Welbeck.

Coming back to United with the confidence he'll have in his ability, having proven he can do it in the PL, will be of great benefit to us. He'll get his chances here, and he'll be getting supply from Giggs, Scholes, Nani, Valencia etc. If he doesn't perform, and is subsequently given less chances, then he may look to leave. But it would be strange for SAF to sell him given his high praise of him, and even more strange if Welbeck leaves before testing himself here after his loan spell.

Looks like he's ahead.

I was only assuming Keane held the record tbh. I always found it amusing that such a limited player has had so much wedge spent signing him over the years but didn't know for certain if he was out on his own.

Just goes to show how valuable a proven goal-scorer can be.

We paid £10m rising to £16m so £18m isn't a great deal really, he was absolutely brilliant last year but this season despite a decent return in goals his body language hasn't been right and has missed god knows how many chances. feck knows why he wants to go, on his twitter and his interviews was talking about how much he loves it here and how grateful he is to the fans for the support and now hands in a transfer request the day after he put in an awful performance agaisnt Newcastle, he can feck right off and hope he fails miserably. Also why to Aston Villa? They're 4th off bottom, I don't think they have as much money to spend (especially not after the signing of Bent), utterly pointless all i can think is he fell out with Bruce.

If we get Welbeck in replacement (which i doubt) then I'd be delighted at that.

Mackem

How do other Sunderland fans feel? A lot of anger at Bent or do any understand him at all?

Actually, I'm pretty sure Ronaldo's had the most money spent on him, although that doesn't really count

Id say Veron or even Crespo might beat Keane on that front......then theres Anelka obviously

Veron > Parma £15 mil > Lazio £18.1 mil > Man United £28.1 mil > Chelsea £15 mil = £76.2 million

Not sure on the value of his transfers between argentine clubs.

Crespo > Lazio £16 mil (they call it 35 but only 16 was actually money the rest was players) > Inter £16 mil > Chelsea £16.8 mil = £48.8 mil (67.8 if you call it £35 mil).

Couldn't find how much it cost Parma to get him from River Plate.

:lol: That's a fair point, can't believe i forgot that.

Everyone i've spoke to is angry at him especially at the timing also stuff like a couple of weeks ago when he scored against Blackpool he patted the badge :rolleyes: his body language hasn't been right for months now. If it was to go to you lot, Chelsea, Arsenal etc then at least it would be understandable but to Aston Villa it makes little sense

I dont think £18m is that over priced to be honest (maybe a few million too much) - he is a proven Premier League striker.
How much do the people who are laughing think he is worth?

However I do not understand why he wants to leave Sunderland for Villa - the only reason I can think of is to be closer to London. Strange move even then.

How many games has Owen played this year in the league? Would be hilarious if we farm him out and win the league leaving him ineligible to get a medal.

:confused:

It would be the best thing in the world to see him win the league with us just to see Scouse reactions
