Benjamin Pavard

If we can get him for €25-30m he’s a no brainer.

23 games isn’t relying on him, is the point. He’s been there long enough. He would be starting 50+ games at centre half if he was relied upon at centre half. The word you are looking for is an ‘option’, which is all he’s ever been there.

And we have a fantastic first CB pairing in Varane and Martinez. He'd be a great "option" to have, for both RB and CB. Those 2 young defenders we are linked to aren't going to displace Varane nor Martinez either way.

27 years old so in his prime, low fee, played 40+ games for Bayern last season, WC winner, can play 2 positions. All for it!

No, he isn't slow, he isn't fast either.

Cheers. Not everyone has to be lightening quick, but slow fullbacks can be a recipe for disaster. Then again, is he slower than Trippier? He's done OK. As a centre back, you do get into foot races from time to time, so Maguire slow is best avoided.

€30 to 35m reported fee.
If true we should be all over this. Our options at the back would be pretty strong

CB : Varane, Martinez, Lindelof, Pavard, Shaw
RB : Pavard, AWB, Dalot
LB : Shaw, Malacia, Dalot
CDM : Casemiro, Amrabat

Varane is rapid when he wants to be, but he is more cautious about when he sprints these days. I remember him making a statue out of Son last season. When he wants to get going, there are few faster. Wasn't it Kroos who said as long as they played together at RM, nobody at RM beat him for pace - that includes prime Ronaldo, Bale, Vinicius (?). He might have lost some, but not that much.

Martinez getting rinsed by Bailey, sure. Bailey is one of the fastest in the league. Shaw was rinsed by Jesus Navas, Lennon (old Lennon in fact), Adama etc - he's still pretty fast over distance. Martinez is still a fast centre back, and very quick over short distances.

Varane doesn't rely on athleticism and never had. He can outrun most players and he can also outmuscle most of them but his game has almost exclusively been based on reading and anticipating actions.

He is a better CB, he has been used as a RB because he can do it at high level. France didn't have a better alternative and his ability to play RB fixed an issue for Bayern that they haven't had to fix since.

Fair enough in that case could be a really good signing then as I feel we need a new starting RB personally, and he can then cover CB. Although maybe he won't want to play RB...

Pavard would be a really great addition. Looks like we are doing some smart and rational business for once this transfer window.

That must be the most Michael Owen thing i ever heard:lol:

Come one, there's a big difference between being quick and fast. You can be relatively fast but not quick, and the other way around. Martinez is more quick than fast, and Varane is definitely fast but not all that quick. Quick and nimble.

Agree with this. When he wants to, he's rapid, but he's a brilliant reader of the game. He's matured and not that different from Rio. How often did we actually see Rio going at full throttle? Varane does it slightly more often, but not often at all. Maguire has to run around a lot more than Varane - a damning sight, for sure!

He’s played 109 games at CB.

44 of those at Bayern.

17 of those this season just past.

In the champions league last season he played against Barcelona, PSG and Inter Milan and kept clean sheets as a CB in those games.

But it’s true and it’s not a Michael Owen comment.

He is not a fast RB but he’s also not slow. His speed is not a strength nor is it a notable weakness that is regularly exploited so it’s a concise way of expressing this.

I said it with tongue in cheek.

This would be great. It gives us a very good option at right-back and allows us to manage Varane game time better. Surprised he hasn't moved already at the quoted price. He would Improve Liverpool's defence, maybe he wants Champions League football though.

I'm already too invested in the Todibo dream, but Pavard's good

Signing from Bayern - has anyone commented on his injury issues :-having said that , excited about this.

From Dalot-Maguire-Lindelof-Shaw to

Pavard-Varane-Licha-Shaw in season and a half is a great turnaround

He's scored a lot of stunning goals for a RB though.
The problem is that he thinks he can do this every game and for every screamer there are ~20 balls straight into the stands.

My 2 cents regarding Pavard:
- As a CB he isn't better than your existing options
- As a RB he is a defensively good option, but not good enough going forward for most top teams (it was okay in the last years for us to balance Davies)
- He commits a lot of silly fouls
- As a character he seems a bit difficult, he used to tell the media every other week that he wants to play as CB when he war a starter for us as RB. There were also some rumors about alcohol problems

I'm not too worried if he leaves although Mazraoui is better not getting injured if we sell Pavard without a replacement.

What kind of fullback is he ?
In my mind I have him down as Gary Neville -esq.

I'm starting to think French players are a bit high maintenance in general. Seems examples of that are aplenty.

This plus Mainoo at cdm when he's back fit!

We'll be title contenders in my opinion if we can get Pavard plus Amrabat. The only concern will be scoring goals but based on our attack vs. Lens plus Hojlund I think we'll be fine there.

I like this a lot. Really like it. That's a title winning defence, in my opinion.

Next season or the one after, we also need to be on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Varane. It's not just about this season, but about getting back to that 'conveyor belt of talent' that we seemed to have under Sir Alex.

This transfer would be exactly why all my midfielder chips aren’t all on Amrabat. Another surprise wouldn’t shock me

Watched 30 seconds of a compilation, and he's better than Dalot.

Yeah and I am confident we are still looking for a long term replacement, remember guys like Todibo & Tapsoba are still relatively young. Either of them have plenty of time to play for this club.

Seems like quite a cunning plan given he is more than decent at RB as well as CB.
