 Not even subtle.

He had 5 assists last season in a free scoring and conceding Monaco side.

I'm sorry but that opinion is beyond idiotic. Let me break it down to you....

First off he had 5 assists in the league alone. Those came in 25 games (~2000 mins), so not even a full season. That's incredible for a left back. You want to know who had most assists in the league in our squad last season?
- Herrera/Martial 6
- Ibra 5
- Pogba 4
- Mata/Valencia 3

Also, outside of United, all the players in the PL that had more than 5 assists were forwards or attacking mids.

Worth noting, Mendy had 11 assists in all competitions including 4 assists in 7 Champions League appearances. So over the whole season he is on a par with Herrera (also 11) who is our top assist man. Although we should mention Herrera has achieved those 11 assists over 3.990 mins and Mendy over 3.194, so 9 games less. In fact if you break it down, Mendy has the best assists/min ratio out of every single player in our squad. Yeah, terrible stuff.

Perisic, who allegedly is worth the 50m, had the season of his life and still had only 1 assist more (12) in the same amount of minutes (~3000) from a far more advanced position. Marcelo, widely consider the best LB in the world, had 14 assists last season in 3878 mins of football. That's the best ratio of any full back in the top 5 leagues, an assist every 277 mins. Yet only marginally better to Mendy's 1 assist every 290 mins, which I believe puts him only 2nd (might be wrong).

PS. I personally hope we sign the feck out of him. But I have a feeling City have already wrapped this up.

We need this guy!! The strength, speed and power of him along with what we already in the squad would be fantastic!! Sign him up before City do :)

He is even the best left back in the world, the fawning over him is quite OTT. For the money quoted, go stick a bid in for much superior Alex Sandro

He's better in his position than Perisic - the money quoted is straight from the Summer 2017 pricelist.

Edit: I'm still wondering why it's taking so long though, and PSG have made me twitchy with Alves.

Taken so long? Probably because half the bids reported and "on the verge of..." reports are possibly completely false. Usually the case, and is also why fans get proper peed off when said player goes elsewhere.

What a stupid point. No one here thinks Perisic is worth the money.

Exactly. You mean you can't find an alternative? It's almost as if transfers take lots of planning before they actually happen - "Just go and stick in a bid for Sandro" was stupid too, which is what I responded to.

Don't know why Perisic is brought into it since the reason why he's still an Inter player is because he isn't worth the money.
What an absurd point

Mendy is a LB who can't defend, I know a lot will say Perisic is an attacker who doesn't score goals but that aside yours is a silly point to make in the first place

Very true to be fair, it's unfair to point fingers until that transfer is done. I still remember this beauty from you though. No good buys, only bad sellers. Maybe Monaco are just really good sellers in this instance?:)

The two can net off.

Even if the numbers are true, how is it a fantastic piece of business? Did City say pretty please and Monaco relented?
If anything it would be horrible business from Monaco rather than great strides from City.
If I sold my house for a fraction of it's value it wouldn't make the buyer Alan Fecking Sugar

The Silva point still stands true though.
Selling a player on the cheap is a United trait, bow down to your betters!

He will rack in assists next season with his crossing ability. I don't think he's the best left-back your ever going to see but he's absolutely fantastic in the final third

He'd make a fantastic wing-back with his athleticism, dribbling and crossing. He got 11 assists last season, including 4 assists in 7 CL games.

He's an ok defender though that's not his strong suit. He would be suited better with 3 CBs to protect him and more freedom to attack. Not sure how he going to cope at City with such an attacking formation and line up that plays. 4-2-3-1 with Toure-KDB in midfield and Mendy-Walker at fullbacks. Coupled with meh CBs and a dodgy goalie.

I can only imagine the scrutiny and almost outrage that Mourinho would receive if 3/4 of his defence were bought for £50M+. But with *********** Pep it's a different story.

So 220m potentially spent this transfer window and they still haven't signed a defender!

signing for the summer for me and worth every penny. He is exactly the kind of wing back pep turns into beasts.

Gutted he's chosen City. But after signing Shaw for £35 million we couldn't really go for Mendy two summers later for £55 million

Excellent post

Another good signing for City. The guy is a real athlete and with him and Walker bombing on they've got serious threat overlapping Silva + Sane.

We should have though. Shaw is not a patch on Mendy. Shaw has not shown anything near enough to be considered even a good united player. He has only 2 assists in his whole career here for us.

I think left back is the area which we need to strengthen the most.

Hopefully Shaw kicks on next season and becomes one of the best left backs in the league - I really cannot see this happening though.

Luke has 2 assists for us in the last 3 seasons. I understand he broke his leg but his recent injuries don't seem to be related to that. 2 assists in 3 seasons is just not great figures. We need more from our flanks, I think a player like Mendy would have improved us vastly.

Mendy and Sane on the left, with Sterling/B.Silva and Walker on the right is pretty frightening on paper. With KdB/Silva in the middle who do you mark? If Pep gets them playing it could be great to watch.

He's definitely changed tack with a few signings, strong athletes mixed in with the technical footballers. I think that was the right thing to do.

Peresic was brought into it in @MadMike excellent post comparing assist numbers of various players and it went from there.

So if they win the league, is Pep a genius or has he bought his way to it? All managers do to an extent but i have always said he is not the best manager in the world, the talk he would come here and dominate was always BS. Mendy is a decent signing, not a kyle walker fan, bernardo is good, and the keeper just smacks of vastly overpaying
