We Spent 27 m on shaw. nearly half the amount.
27m three years ago got you a lot more than it does today.
The amount that you (very wisely) invested in Rio is probably 80-90m in today's terms.

Money really doesn't matter to them , does it? Anyway they'll have the same problem as last season, they will concede silly goals. Comparing to them is pointless though, the league is won by winning against all teams, not just one another. And he'll still be vulnerable to counter attacks.

If he doesn't lead them to a league title, or CL final after having spent a shitload of money, he'll be considered a failure. Tbf, I think he'll himself leave if he doesn't win anything.

Good thing for them is most of the players he bought are at least young, so they'll be there even after he leaves. It's almost FM like, the way he's stockpiling the young talents

It's an inevitability that other big clubs will buy good players - we can't fecking sign them all!

Personally don't think United need to be spending £52m on Mendy.

It's just galling to see so many fans moaning about the fact that we've got Lukaku instead of Morata. I guarantee that if we'd landed Morata and Lukaku had gone to Chelsea then our fans would be moaning in that instance too.

Of course, you always have a few camps on here. The Lukaku and Morata camp was clear. One half jeered, the other cried, so obviously if we ended up with Morata it would have been the same outcome, just a different group of posters with opposing emotions.

I am not too fussed about missing out on players like Mendy, Walker or Ederson or Lacazette, but more if we overpay for players in positions we want to strengthen when there are better and often cheaper options available

No it isn't. Just because some guy came up with number won't make it fact.

Some times this statement is an attitude of Lethargicity or Over arrogance and overconfidence Or Sometimes incredible confidence depending on your situation.

I agree we dont need to be spending 52 m on mendy and its not our most dire need , But you cant be blind to the fact about what are we going to face in the league which is inevitable and could deter own own league ambitions if You are yourselves not Prolific and ready yet. You have to be atleast aware of that fact to stay the top team in the country and stay there.

Fergie was.

Giving a free run on both mendy and Silva is not at all wise, Specially when you'll face some top class philosophies in the game one on one.

We cant sign them all, Yes But also ask Why can Some other rivals sometimes Sign them all they need?

It does put massive pressure on Luke shaw to inevitabely succeed now.
You do realise that Woodward signs players that the manager wants. So if Mourinho doesn't want them, what do you want Woodward and United to do ? Buy them anyway?

How did we give City a free run on Silva and Mendy, when it seems that Mourinho is not even interested in them? Different managers, different systems. In the end, Jose will buy( or try to buy ) the players he wants, who he thinks can make us better. You can't sign players simply to stop them going to a rival. We acted very decisively on Lukaku, who the manager clearly wanted.

I agree we dont need mendy for that price right now.

But i Hope we dont say We cant win it all and keep that attitude

We're overpaying again here but I guess what we consider overpaying has become the norm where a £40m bid for Sigurdsson will get flat out rejected.

It does seem a lot of money, after 1 top season. I remember yr or 2 back he was on his way to sunderland. So can only imagine he has improved since then lol

This, i've seen people say he's a better deal than Walker but Walker has been consistent in England for the best part of 3 years and also has HG status. Mendy like Mbappe has been good for 1 season and while I think he'll do well, this one I feel could swing either way. Still excited to see him in our shirt and if he does well he should be a great watch.

The thing with Walker and Mendy is they're both extremely quick, physical and athletic, which makes the prices easier to stomach. So even if they're not having a great game, they're always a potential threat going forwards and always difficult to get past and get away from.

What we can't garauntee is they'll be able to keep the ball under pressure all the time and they won't give it away, but perhaps Pep is adjusting his game to the PL, who knows. I'm excited to see them both starting, and I think Danilo will provide good cover for both sides. We'll have a dilemma if Danilo shows his Porto form because he was higher rated than both of them!

Even without Pep, City have this incredible ability to just get a transfer done. They hardly ever have ongoing saga's, the players just come. Apart from Sterling I'm struggling to think of any.

Laporte. Plenty others as have been mentioned.

Transfers look easy for City because they get a fraction of the media coverage to begin with. And when they're serious on a player they rock up, deposit ~£50m in your bank account and walts out with the new signing a couple of days later.

If they wanted Matic, Dier or Perisic they'd have signed them weeks ago for £50m each, as they did for Stones, KDB, Mendy, Walker, Sane and Bernardo.

I'd not care if some player in their mid 30's went to City?

If you're on about when we signed Evra and Vidic, who'd have cared to be honest, they were not high profile players. City are paying over top dollar for players who've done very well in the Champions league or the Premiership. A million miles away from what Evra and Vidic were.

LOL! In the 2003-2004 season, Evra was the starting left-back on the Monaco team that reached the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final. In that same season domestically, Evra was named the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year. He was also named to the organisation's Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

Seems you're wildly wrong about Evra. He was also scouted heavily for another 18 months before being signed for United in January 2006.

This is what people forget, they're significantly reducing the average age of the squad even if it is costng a fortune. They're also paying the money for some of the best young players in Europe, obviously there's going to be a few duds but they've already got their attack future proofed with Sane, Jesus and Silva.

So if a can't miss type English young player came on today's market you don't think he'd fetch that sort of money with the English premium?
Van Dijk was being talked of as a 60m player and he's older, overseas and not the player Rio was by some distance.

I do think the age of the signings Pep is making is definitely being largely overlooked, and people are just pointing to the money. A front 3 of Sane, Jesus and B.Silva as you mentioned, isn't an easy thing to just go out and sign, we've spent around £110m on them (which feels a bit of a steal now one year on) but that's a bargain if they stick around doing the business for the next 5 years.

The only real Pep transfers that look wildly out of place is Bravo who was rubbish and Stones who hasn't done anything to justify £50m yet. He clearly fits the Pep style but he absolutely needs a leader next to him, and they're harder to find! He's got a lot to prove.

We are only really a CB, DM, and perhaps a top striker when Aguero leaves away from a squad that could realistically challenge for a fair while without too much investment. It bodes well for future windows, especially when the market could be even worse!

This guy seemed like a physical speedy beast... JM type. I can only think JM thinks his defending is a little suspect for the reason why we didn't go for him. Shaw has potential, but comes across too lazy overall... he should have progressed in 3 years.

This still open? Are City selling him or something?

I think we should sign Mendy as Monaco look like they're willing to sell this summer.
I'm just joking and am having a bit of fun with the white text before this thread closes.
