Bebe

Remains one of the most ridiculous transfers ever...but can he perform any worse than what we currently have on our wings at the moment?

No one dares try audacious stuff like this in our side. It's quite sad.

I still like to have faith he'll make it here. He'd probably be no worse than Valencia on the wing at the moment

Get a Premier League loan!?!?!?!? He is hardly pulling up trees over there in Portugal or at any of his loans for that matter! He is nowhere near United quality. The keeper should have saved that shot anyway. It wasn't in the far corners and he got a full hand to it.

There was one time in training where Scholes was showing off by banging goals in from outside the box from corners. Bebe pointed at the goal and missed 5 times in a row. After that he smiled and left. Scholes stayed there for an hour trying to do the same, but he just couldn't. - Macheda

How do you know? I assume you have some insight.

I think he was reasonable at Rio Ave and hence was loaned to a slightly better club (theoretically) in Paços de Ferreira, as they finished third last season. Thing is they're bottom of the table now.

Costinha was their manager earlier in the season. Did more damage there than at Old Trafford.

Arruda

Is he showing form over there that suggest that he could become good enough for Manchester United?

I don't watch Paços de Ferreira play, but to still hope he could become good enough for Manchester United is purely delusional. He looked good enough for Rio Ave last year, (I saw him a couple of times against Porto and Benfica) but they're a Championship level team at best. I wouldn't want him as a squad player at Porto for free. I think he's playing at his level. Will probably manage an average career in average clubs in the Portuguese league.

His move to United was just a Jorge Mendes stunt, United bit the bait and should now move on.

I thought you knew?

I do know. Everyone with an ounce of sense knows. It is just that you do not seem to respect my opinion and that you would prefer to hear it from someone who is seeing a lot of him. United would have got him a Premier League loan already if there were any teams interested in giving him game time, there won't have been though, because he is not good enough.

I don't disrespect your opinion, but you're stating your opinion as fact, when you've just alluded to not having seen anything of him on loan. So how can you be of the opinion that his loans have been terrible?

The signing of Bebé must have been one of the most amateurish moves by a professional football club ever. Either there was incredible naivety about it, or there were some more elusive reason for it that we can't fully understand. The timing was incredibly suspicious.

Me too. It would be interesting to see how far his physical attributes will let him go; he's lightning, knows how to dribble, can certainly shoot the ball with enough power, sometimes cross it with too much power.

Kyle Walker is proof that it can take you to a very high level.

There was some article about year after his signing saying that he never costed 7-8 millions, not even half.

Sir Alex has a man crush on Carlos Queiroz.. who used his influence to peddle us Manucho and Bebe

No matter what way I look at it I can only think the deal was completely crooked, brought about by us being in Jorge Mendes' pocket. Mendes got close to €3m on that deal despite him being sold for £125,000 weeks before and Mendes not even being his agent until close to the move.

I suspect it was all done on a nod and a wink to solidify the relationship with Mendes for future deals.

I never said that his loans were terrible. I said that he wasn't pulling up any trees, which is what he would need to be doing over there to hint that he might be good enough for us. His first loan was terrible, his second loan was OK and his third loan has not been great. All these loans are at clubs well below the standards for Manchester United.

I asked Arruda on your behalf as I felt that you were sceptical of what I was saying. Arruda is the number one Portuguese poster on here and an erudite and fair poster to boot. I thought that he might be able to shine some light on Bebe's expedition in Portugal these past two years for you. I thought that was a more reasoned approach than you and I having a pointless and long debate where we pick apart the semantics and insignificant holes in each others arguments.

The Bebe saga has been embarrassing for the club and Sir Alex Ferguson. Personally I will be glad to see him leave the club.

This gives room for ample imagination. Can't see him watching third tier Portuguese football in his spare time, so it was either a third-hand opinion or he just said something to avoid looking ignorant.

I can't imagine it being a much more elaborated opinion than "Who? Bebé... Oh, Bebé? Yeah, read about him in the paper. Been linked with Madrid. Must go for him now before they step in."

Probably knew as much about him as the average football fan - nothing. He was coach for the NT youths in the beginning of his managerial career, can't see any reason for him being well informed nowadays. I thought clubs employed scouts for this type of situation.

Another suspicious thing was Bebé being linked with Madrid in "A Bola" a few days before the deal with United. Portuguese press always has an agenda, surely Mendes pulled some strings there to make that up and garner other media attraction towards the player.

Carlos Queiroz, another of my No. 2s, was brilliant. Just brilliant. Outstanding. An
intelligent, meticulous man...When Carlos came over to England in 2002 to speak to us, I was waiting for him in my tracksuit. Carlos was immaculately dressed. He has that suaveness about him. He was so
impressive that I offered him the job right away. He was the closest you could be to being the
Manchester United manager without actually holding the title. He took responsibility for a lot
of issues that he didn’t have to get involved in.

From Sir Alex' autobiography. Seems like it was love at first sight.

Indeed, but I don't think that Walker is at all rubbish as many here will argue. Fact is that he can be hard to get past simply because of his pace and strength - the same attributes give him an advantage going forwards. Also, he crosses the ball quite well.

Could've used him today. I'm sure he would added to that comedy we all witnessed.

Think he got 2 today. Something like 8 goals in 22 games for PDF.

He's got raw potential. Some incredible technique but I don't know if he's good enough tactically. To pull off some really amazing goals, you need to have some fantastic technique. Remember that goal he scored in the reserves? That blew my mind.

In any case, if he can be a solid and consistent performer, we'll potentially have a decent squad player in our hands.
