He is a really poor player, I think he was probably the worst player on the pitch today, that is saying something considering that we were playing Crawley Town and not Barcelona

Ok, there are two ways of looking at this...

First, some clever agent saw a way for himself to make a quick few million and it involved pulling the wool over the eyes of a manager who has seen it and done it all in over 20 years of dealing with greedy agents. He somehow set up some situation whereby the scouts of Manchester United were alerted to a player that no one had ever seen and told them that if they didn't buy him now for £8million, Real Madrid would get him and he'd be the next Ronaldo.

United's scouts then got onto the blower to the naive young Fergie and told him of this and Fergie immediately said "ZOMG! We'd better get him signed up then! How much is he? £8million for the next Ronaldo!? feck me! That sounds like a bargain! Sign him up! What? Yes, I know I haven't seen him personally but I trust your judgement when it comes to what you hear on the grapevine about obscure young players that have had absolutely no professional training whatsoever."

The second way of looking at it is something along the lines of the complete opposite of the above...

And you don't think you just answered your own question Sultan?

OMG! :D

No really

Do you think he is worth a place in the team based on his performances so far, even against teams such as Southampton and Crawley?

Do you think there are players no better than him at Old Trafford in the reserves/youths/Academy?

A manager who accepted having not seen him play. Odd for such an experienced head don't you think?

Very odd. Almost unbelievable, in fact.

At £8million, Bebe is what is now categorised as a "substantial" purchase for one of the premier clubs in Europe but it is by no means extraordinary.

Perhaps we could have done better with £8million, perhaps we could have done worse with the money.

All I know is that Bebe is a rookie but a rookie that Fergie believes he can mould into something special - I have no doubts about that because if it transpired that we had been duped, Fergie wouldn't be playing him at all. There is no common-sense reason for Fergie to be playing him. In fact, I'd say that any deal on Bebe would perhaps even have appearance clauses within it to limit our exposure and so the less he plays, the better we come out of it should he turn out to be less than expected.

All I know is that Fergie has taken players over and over again where many of us are thinking "What the hell?" and then gradually, perhaps over the course of several years, we see what Fergie saw from the start.

Bebe has been put into a situation where his whole life has literally been turned upside-down within the space of months. He needs time to adapt to a great many things.

Perhaps on the training pitch, when he is just his own relaxed self, he does stuff that has everyone purring but in front of 70,000 crowds, he gets a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

It's not a completely ridiculous suggestion and by playing him in games which we are expected to win anyway, it would seem the best way to get him accustomed to it all.

Was it just me or the last 20 minutes, he was slouching around, didn't want the ball at all and he didn't even defend...

I mean, his stamina is not yet worth to play 90 minutes and I'm sure if both Rafael and Fabio weren't injured last night, he wouldn't have lasted.

Dismal performance in every aspect, could not pass the fullback to save his life... I mean you can see that Obertan at least had the stamina and passion to run and take on the defender, but BeBe' was awful...

In the last 8, I doubt he'd even be called to the bench at this rate. Better improve or I can see this as another Tosic.

One thing that Fergie definitely mentioned when Bebe first arrived was that he was a million miles away from the fitness levels required for a top class football team and that this was an area they were focusing on.

I was actually surprised to see him complete a full 90 minutes tonight because of this so he must be making some progress in that area although what you say there, if correct, would suggest that there is still some work to be done and the fact that at least one substitution was forced upon Fergie might have been a reason for him lasting the full 90.

It's not just in front of 70,000 crowds. He has hardly looked like a player in the reserves.

Almost after all purchases SAF says "they had been tracking the player for a long time". In some case a few seasons. Bebe as we understand was purchased without much scouting.

He was lazy all game.

Ok. I must be missing something that was said far earlier in the thread.

Why exactly did we sign him? What does United get out of it all? Why did Fergie play him tonight?

He was lazy all game.

I wasn't at the match, be at around 25 - 40 minutes in the first half, Bebe was anonymous.

No one passed the ball to him because he f*cked up every chance imo.

Not sure if you can call that lazy, but his touch/skill didn't look United quality at all. He is already 20, not an 18 year old and we'd expect a bit more from a 7m signing. Makes the like of Luke Varney, N'Zogbia worth 25m if we compare them.

Luke Varney - 28 years old.

Charles N'Zogbia - 24 years old.

Sweet... Bebe has 4-8 years to prove that he's as good if not better than them at a third of the price :)

Are we all allowed to finally openly say that he's clearly not good enough now?

Based on his performances so far I'd argue he's not even good enough to play for today's opponents let alone any other top flight team

7m spent on him though is even more of a puzzler than him simply being a United player

You're not listening to the answers. You seem intent on some crackpot conspiracy theory involving United acting as some kind of benevolent fund for agents and ex-employees.

You don't want to believe a United player can be crap, and we can make mistakes in the market.

Actually that was my theory. ;):D

The point some of us are trying to make is that he may not be good enough now but put the whole situation surrounding Bebe into some kind of context and realise that he may well be good enough given a bit more time.

He is strong, powerful, pacy and can kick a ball at tremendous pace with minimal backlift. His upbringing suggests that he can also cope with adversity and will never take this opportunity he has been given for granted.

Those are his raw ingredients, it seems.

Fergie appears to have decided to work with that as a basis and see how far it goes for the lad and I am saddened that so many on here are not willing to give him more of a chance. He has only been here for six months and has had an awful lot to cope with during that time. We'd give seasoned pro's from abroad more time than that, let alone a kid who is probably still wondering what the hell has happened to his life.

To answer why he played today, Park, Valencia and Owen are all injured and we were preserving Nani and Giggs for Wednesday, he was essentially the only option.

I'm sure at the time there was someone like you saying the exact same about Bellion or Liam Miller or Djemba-Djemba

Face facts he will never be good enough for United and furthermore once sold by Utd he more the likely will never be heard of again

No he was not, there were kids like King on the bench who were dying to impress today. They would have busted a lung to get the chance that Bebe got today. This is part of my frustration with the whole situation. Those kids got shafted.

I would like to have seen King as well but he has had less first team time than Bebe, and given the money we spent I suspect Fergie wanted to test Bebe's progression as opposed to playing a player 2 years younger.

Well the good news is that Fergie's job will probably be coming up in the next few years... I trust your application will be in the post.

If there weren't better players in the reserves than Bebe, then SAF should do the right thing and resign.

SAF

"Some players came in and did not do themselves justice"

Meaning they were rubbish.

I've just checked the last 10 mins of the match and he never stopped running. For most of this time he was playing as our most advanced player too. His stamina certainly lasted the full 95 mins. He certainly wasn't slouching around, in fact quite the opposite if you watch the match.

85 min he went flying forward after a long pass from Carrick but the goalie just got to it before him. Goalie then dropped the ball and Bebe got hold of it but he was offside.

89 min he collected a ball from Fletcher on the wing and was nearly involved in a fracas with two Crawley players but wisely ignored them.

91st min he chased a Crawley player up the side of the pitch and was in the penalty box helping to defend against the long throw from Crawley, followed then by their corner....from which they almost scored.

93rd min ran into the opposite penalty area alongside Rooney as he took a shot at goal.

95 min chased after a loose ball into the penalty area which the Crawley goalie picked up.
