The One Show...off.

Ok, I'll stop now.

I'm going by history - all the jobs he's gotten have been when the clubs have been desperate. Why do you think SAF ignored him when everyone knew how much Mou openly courted/craved the position?

I don't think saf ignored him. Everybody ran for the hills and didn't want to be the guy after fergie managing United. I am only guessing, but that might be the reason.

New kit announced!:

For me its like being asked if I want to wear a colostomy bag.

The initial answer is a definite no. But if you think about it, come to terms with the fact you have a serious illness and think about the alternatives, you are likely to conclude that actually you do quite want one after all. Its not something you feel like shouting from the rooftops about, but you are looking forward to being able to go out in public and get back to something like normal.

Mourinho is our colostomy bag.
Why is this so accurate?

This is so perfectly put.

Di Marzio getting involved fueling the muppet madness next, be surprised now if Mourinho doesn't come. I would be really happy with this potential appointment. The way it's currently looking we won't make the top four. I'm not giving up hope, long way to go and things can change but it will be difficult. United are playing better and there is a chance but my trust in LVG is gone. In the case we don't get CL football, if we got Pochettino it could be Moyes 2 and we wouldn't get the same players in the Summer. I'm talking about the biggest players in Europe, Jose can do this. Mourihno is the safer choice in my opinion. It's going to be interesting to see how this unfolds. Yeah Mourihno has question marks over his conduct and giving young players a chance. I'm hoping he doesn't neglect our younger players if he comes. I personally think he will help Depay be the player we know he can be. He will bring confidence to others if he comes(maybe not Mata). It's not going be boring that's for sure.

I say get Jose asap and drive everyone mad. Everybody fecking hates United anyway, let's get the master of the dark arts in. We could change the Rocky music that the players come out to at Old Trafford to Darth Vaders entrance music. Mourihno marching out in his black suit with our tie looking evil, going mad on the sidelines getting Old Trafford bouncing. Can't wait:cool:

He would definitely get Old Trafford rocking. Bring him in!!!

I think to some extent the reason it looks desperate is principally because after two managers have come and failed, we are desperate. But some of it is about Mourinho personally as well: there is a perception, whether accurate or not, that he was passed over for the job before, that we snubbed him, but now we are going back to him cap in hand. That looks desperate, and sometimes appearances are as important as realities. There is also the perception among some people - a few, a lot, I dont know - that he may be past it, that he lost the plot in Madrid, it got worse at Chelsea, he finally crashed and burned, but that we turned to him anyway as our last roll of the dice. That looks like desperation. There is the view, this one more mainstream, that we would have appointed other people if we had the chance - Guardiola, Ancelotti, Klopp, whoever, but all those candidates slipped through our fingers: that looks desperate.

It can be argued both ways of course, I dont need to repeat the accepted wisdom that he is a serial winner, PL tested, wants to manage us more than he has ever wanted anything in his life before, wants to replicate SAF etc etc. So in that sense it doesnt look desperate.

But among my friends who dont support United the word desperate is cropping up a lot to describe this, and to be honest I am not inclined to disagree, and that is related to the very first bit of this post: whether this appointment is desperate specifically because it is Mourinho or not, the fact of the matter is we are now desperate, desperate for an end to the shit we have endured ever since SAF left, desperately hoping Mourinho will be our saviour. So whether or not people are using the word to mean the same thing, I do think it is a fair description of where we are right now, so I am not inclined to argue the point.

Winning is not the important thing about supporting a club, I just want us to play good football and enjoy watching United again. Let's hope Jose can surprise then.

Mourinho: A Warning from History

He may be chemotherapy and we might get bald, but at least it cures the cancer

The fans on social media are going crazy by each update on Mourinho. If it is not just speculation and things have indeed reached the stage where Mendes' lawyers are working on finalizing deal, then club should announce it ASAP once finalized. It will be good for the players because they will obviously know whats going on (the senior ones especially) and there will be too much curiosity within the squad. Announcing it will put everyone at ease. The problem is, LvG is stubborn and may not take the news that well which will hamper the remaining season. If LvG is taken into confidence, then announcing it will be better for club than dealing with new speculation everyday.

Our debt says that we need to start winning or else it will become unsustainable.

And if we scored in the first few minutes and he then shut up shop for a 1-0 win, I am sure the OT faithful will rock him the same way they have LVG.
This isn't how Mourinho's team play though, contrary to the popular myth. Maybe in big games from time to time, when it's needed - like we had under Ferguson.

I would argue against it being a myth, the CL (Chelsea vs Bayern), (Chelsea vs PSG) and (inter vs Barca) and various other, what you call big games actually show what he is about. He is not a flamboyant manager in terms of team play.

I still do not get the fascination about him. If he comes I will support him, but I would rather have a whole host of managers ahead of him.

Would you rather look desperate over this appointment or (potentially) further embarrassed by the shit on a stick, trophyless football over the next 2 to 3 years?

Chelsea v Bayern? Where they beat Bayern 4-2 at home after a very good performance?

Chelsea v PSG they came back from 3-1 down from the first leg to qualify the first time around. The second time they misjudged the situation after going 1-0 up against 10 men at Stamford, yes. Not like Ferguson would have never done something similar i.e. try to grind out a result at home in CL (Barcelona in 2008 prime example).

Inter v Barcelona was tactical master piece in both legs.

Id rather look desperate.

At the end of the day history will rewrite all of this depending on how it turns out.

If he fails the desperation narrative will probably gain traction: we were cornered into bringing in the guy who our grandees had previously vetoed to clear up the mess created by two botched appointments / we saw all our preferred candidates snapped up by our rivals and took the last guy with the necessary qualifications who was still available, and failed for a third time.

If he comes and we win the league in year 1 or year 2 nobody is going to be talking about desperation.

(Though if things implode in year 3 there'll be a load of "I told you sos" - on here and in the mainstream press, at which point it may all be related back to our apparent ambivalence about signing him in the first place. But that will be much quieter than the howls of delight from around the country if he doesnt even manage to win anything in the first place.)

Wrong games CL final vs Bayern, getting knocked our by PSG and a defensive wall against Barca.

Win at all costs attitude. Seems a bit hypocritical that we slate LVG for boring wins, but for Jose a tactical masterclass.

To be fair I reckon Van Gaal would be getting a lot less criticism if we were boring but consistently winning. It is the winning that makes it a tactical masterclass.
