Stan Pearson? why not use our own City-Scouser hybrid, Sir Matt Bu0sby.
SBC needs to remember he had such a great career because of that outsider as well. Who knows if the ones who became the Busby Babes would gave got their chance. A former player might have thought different players were better.

Oliver Holt is a grade A moron and not to be taken seriously.

Horseshit.

Do you think that it would have been better if we did well with Sir Bobby Charlton instead of doing better like we did with Sir Alex Ferguson? Even if they had around the same result (which would have been as unlikely as Giggs having the same results as Mourinho)?

The manager there is to guide the team to trophies, and he becomes part of the 'family' if he does so. Our longest serving manager hasn't had any relations with us until he joined us. Our second longest serving manager was a City captain and a Liverpool player. Would it have been better if we gave the job to Stan Pearson instead of that City-Scouser hybrid? Or if fans had their way to Bryan Robson Red Army instead of Sir Alex one?

Use your head, man.
One of our greatest ever managers was a former City player.

One of our worst ever was a former United player.

Its what they do in the job that matters.

Tell me a more exciting moment than Giggs being manager two years ago and I'll be impressed.

Giggs not being manager once his 4 games were over.

So give it to Giggs. Rescue the spirit of the club before you do anything else. Make him the manager, think about roles for Gary and Phil Neville, whose talents are in danger of being obscured by the chaos at Valencia, and give Oxford United boss Michael Appleton, another United alumnus, a senior coaching role. Then sit back and watch the emotion flood back and the results follow.

It's written like bad fan fiction. Bring in Scholes and Robbie Savage too
:nono::wenger::devil:

Easy peasy - let's make this harder x?

This. It's ridiculous that people seem to think that United have some mythical 'dynasty' within the club. The fact is that in 1986 we brought in a very promising manager. He wasn't anything to do with United but went on to establish himself as a legend.

We need to bring in the best man for the job not make a misty-eyed decision for a great ex-player. I have to say that I would have Pochettino. I wanted him when we binned Moyes and I think he's shown at Spurs that he can be a great manager. Happy with Mourinho too though, a proven winner. But Giggs or Neville? Come on
Think Poch might be good in a few years - hey we have to plan for life after whomever is going to be the next manager. He's got something about him and has done great so far this season. I want to see him continue this for a few years and win something before I think he should be considered for the job.
If we're getting Jose, then after he leaves, we will need a 'calming' presence and Poch might be a good idea after Mo. But right now, I want to see some consistency in how he gets on after this season before I 100% think he should be at United.

Does anyone remember 90's Fergie? Or am I alone in having a long term memory?

Jimmy Hill said we were a dirty team....He called Jimmy Hill a prat, on TV, as his team went out and kick lumps out of Norwich

Or the time he said teams never try unless it's against United and that they cheat their fans and manager.

Or the time he actually defended Roy Keane, with a straight face, after he was arrested for assault.

Or the time he attacked Wenger when people said he was intelligent...According to some of you lot it was brilliant and hilarious but, when Mourinho says something similar it's a "disgrace"

Nowt to do with Fergie but, anyone remember the antics in Brazil in 2000? Hardly the "United way"

Seriously, if the "United way" was to be believed, you'd only get the job if you were a virgin and never ate meat on a Friday

Eating meat rules me out :(

Brilliant post.

Clearly for some people the only person qualified for the United job is Pope Francis!

I think for most romantics , the fear is that if Giggs doesnt get the job now, he'll probably never get it again.

Who is to say that what happened to Neville wont happen to him? Even if it doesnt get that bad, it may expose a lot of frailities that would disqualify him from contention. If he leaves and goes to another club, the only way he gets the United job is for him to be amazing. They'll be many more candidates than they will be now.

Its now or never for him. A lot of people want Giggs as manager so badly, that its worth the risk.

Just like the club marketing line, ''It would be the greatest story ever told''....that's ignoring the possibility that it fails miserably.

If they think so, that they are admitting that they think Giggs is a shit manager. Because if it is now or never, and that they fear that he'll fail somewhere else, then surely they can't say with a straight face that Giggs is a good manager.

So, why should we give the job to someone who isn't a good manager?

United > Giggs, as much as I liked Giggs as a player.

On the other hand, United should want an amazing candidate. And Giggs really should relish going out and proving to everyone that he's worthy of the job. Having one failure - even by Gary's standards - doesn't mean you won't make a great manager in the future. It's how you come back from set backs is what's most important. If any one fears Giggs will never get another chance, then that says to me that they have no confidence to begin with in his ability to do the job. If they truly see something there, then they should have no fear with him going off and proving it elsewhere.

"No, I am not enjoying it," Mourinho said. "I can have everything I love at the same time. I can have my family, I can have my friends, I can have my quiet life, which I also like, and I can have my football... I can have everything together and I don't need to give up on one of them.

"To be fully happy I need everything, so I go back to football. I think it's my natural habitat. I have worked since I can remember, and as a manager since 2000. I stopped when I left Chelsea in 2007, for a few months, and now is the second time I stop in 15 or 16 years, so it is not a drama. But for sure, I will be back soon."

Sources told ESPN FC this week that Mourinho was confident about taking over at Old Trafford next season after establishing talks with United.

And though current manager Louis van Gaal said he doesn't believe in the links, Mourinho said he has a preference for the Premier League after finding a greater challenge with Chelsea than in previous spells as manager of Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

"I experimented with English, Italian and Spanish football, three of the top football sides in the world. I always say I need competition -- I need competition every week.

"In Spain I was at an amazing club but I had four matches a year -- Barcelona v Real Madrid, Real Madrid v Barcelona -- and after that you win 4-0, 5-0, 5-1, 6-1...

"Easy to win matches but difficult to win the league, because you are competing against a team that wins and wins and wins like you do, because there are two monsters together.

"So in the end I was champion in Spain with 100 points, and I lost the league in Spain with 91 points. Whereas in England you win leagues with 75, maybe less, so I need competition."

Despite visiting Berlin on Saturday to watch Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin play out a goalless draw, Mourinho was adamant that he sees England as his home -- at least in his personal life.

"At this moment I don't have a job, and I don't know where football will take me, because in football you never know," he said. "But for sure for sure for sure, as a family, our home will still be England, our home will be in London. But obviously I am ready to move.

"As a professional, I am ready to move, especially because football in London for me, in terms of clubs... I think it is clear that I have to move."

He clearly wants the job. He wants to stay and work in England. However knows he cant work for another london club. City have Pep and Liverpool have Klopp. I doubt he wants Ranieris job so surely this is an actual come and get me plea. What are we waiting for????

Aye, if Giggs is anywhere as good as they hope he is, then they don't have to worry...because he'd surely be successful elsewhere.

A bit disturbing that some are actually against Mourinho given the current predicament and the fact that he is widely lauded as one of the best Mangers in the world and has probably won more trophies than any other manager since his Porto days.

Hoddle has said that Giggs should leave OT and get a job further down the pyramid as the experience will be invaluable. Someone talking sense at last. It's in Man United live in the M.E.N.

Barnsley saying it should be Giggs.... Why do they all want Giggs so badly

The media/neutrals have loved United being mediocre. Makes for more variation than us pretty much always being top dogs I suppose. For some reason they seem to think we should just accept it, like when they were calling for us to stick with Moyes for so long.

We could be nailed on for signing Messi in the summer and the same lot on here would find something to moan about.

Not probably, but surely.

Pep has a better trophies per year ratio though.

I really don't like Mourinho but he clearly is a very good manager. Heart wouldn't touch him with a barge pole but head says he would probably be the best appointment we could make in terms of becoming genuinely competitive again.

I wish we had gone for Ancelotti, I've wanted him for years, but as it stands I'll grudgingly admit Mourinho is the best available man for the job and just hope if we do get him that he doesn't act like a total prick.

In a nutshell. Sums my thoughts up exactly.

All the noise suggests this is done. So the question is:

Are we definitely waiting until the end of the season, out of respect to Van Gaal and to give Mourinho a break?

Or will he arrive sooner but we are just waiting for a bad result to sack LVG on?

Part of me thinks this switch would have happened during our bad spell in December if Guardiola to City had already been confirmed.

To be fair I'm pretty sure Holt is a City fan.

Looks that way, and plus as Klopp and Hiddink have shown replacing a manager midway through the season doesn't always help. This time off could do him a world of good.

Though the silence from United is deafening, I wouldn't be that surprised if we end up with Poch, and Mourinho goes to Spurs; after all, they did talk to him even before he went to Real.
