Bastian Schweinsteiger

I think that's where Strootman comes in, when he's fit.
Yup. Hopefully that is the plan. There is risk in the injury niggles of Schweinsteiger and how well Strootman recovers, but if it works, it'll be fantastic.
Wouldn't describe him as box to box.
I would say he is. He isn't as freakishly versatile as Pogba or Vidal, but he's very industrial, a decent passer and defensively aware.

Over 300 appearances for Bayern, rose through the youth sides. Double winners, much better chance of silverware where he is currently.

Why torment yourselves with false hope?

Because he's not at the front of Pep's pecking order but he's one of the best paid players at Bayern.

Plus it's just something to do through the off season.

For me he is the player who would lift everyone around him. People on this forum keep forgeting that we dont have bad team just the manager was bad last year. If we can bring him and Shaw we can challenge for the premier league title.

..................De Gea
Rafael--Smalling--Jones--Shaw
------Swaini-----Carrick
Januzaj-----Mata-----Rooney
-------------RvP

For me this is very strong team. Maybe if we can add one good CB we will be even better. We will still have very strong bench with the likes of Kagawa, Nani, Fellain, Cleverley, Evans, Evra, Welbeck, Valencia.

I think we will be sorted with Shaw and Swchweinsteiger + maybe one CB. Maybe if we can sell Fellaini we can add Strootman.I think some player will raise their game under van Gaal. Cleverly, Kagawa and Welbeck can benefit from van Gaal appointment.

I still believe we wont buy a lot this year and we don't have to.

I'm not sure how well Schweinsteiger and Carrick would do, I have my doubts. Strootman, Vidal, Pogba or even Gustavo alongside Schweinsteige would be a lot better IMO.

A 27 year old Schweinsteiger would have been the perfect partner for Carrick, perfect. He'd still be quite an ideal midfield addition if it we are only buying one midfielder (that'll go straight into our first XI) this Summer.

25m. I apologize if already posted. Both Times and Independent running this story, there's surely something in it.

Where do the media get things like the statement in this article, that Moyes wanted Fernando and Eliaquim Managa, but the club wanted a detailed cost justification report first? I have never heard that before, all we got was it was 'dithering Dave's' fault, surely they must get it from somewhere rather that just pulling it out of thin air like it seems.

As exciting as it is, this has the feel of the Fabregas pursuit last year, whilst we've stood by and watched Fabregas go to Chelsea for relative peanuts.

From Woodward himself most likely. With the news about Fabregas going to Chelsea today, there's been more rumblings of discontent towards United for not having any signings done before the World Cup, so there'll probably be a few articles over the next few days saying we'll be bidding x for y. I'd prefer us to actual do before saying as it doesn't make much sense.

Would everyone be happy with us parting with £25m for a injury prone 30 year old?

Of course. I don't understand the obsession of getting caught up in the numbers. LvG has a set list of targets, and Woodward should do everything possible to get them. If that means spending £25m on a 30 year old (who happens to be world class), then so be it.

Ian Herbert is reliable, so it seems him and Ducker are being briefed.

What did Ducker say about the Fabregas to us deal last year and also this year? I think he said a similar thing about Fabregas last year what he is saying about Schweinsteiger this year.

Yes we need to finally 'do' for sure, from January onwards we have had stories of players coming in, it's just a bit boring, and pointless now, just shut up and then when the player has signed announce it, it will reflect far better on the club to do it that way.

I just don't think they have the legs. Schweinsteiger is coming going into 30s and with his injures, I have my doubts. That's why I think someone like Vidal would be perfect alongside him.

Fletcher hitting 30's already and Carrick way above now... I really don't know what to think about this seriously. Part of me thinks we should be building something for the future.

He's absolutely great despite the age and if we'll acquire him plus a bit younger solid midfielder like Strootman, Kovacic or someone class then it'll be a great summer.

However Schweini alone is not enough to be safe about midfield next season...

Still a possibility that LvG would want two new midfielders in there, and no Carrick.

I'd pay as much as 30m for him and just get the deal done. 30 isn't that old and we really do need a player who'll add quality instantly.

Then quickly move on to signing another CM to play beside him.

If be happy with no Carrick, he was awful last season. If we can get Bastian and another class CM I'd be pretty happy.
It's just that a week or so ago we were going to offer £10m-£12m now it's £25m. I suppose we're in the position were we need to deals like this to catch up.

I would happily take him. But if we plan to play him alongside Carrick in a midfield 2 we will get overrun massively

Yes. One season with a few injuries doesn't make him "injury prone" just because he is nearly 30.

So how would a potential midfield pairing of Schweinsteiger and Strootman faire?

His brother is a United fan, which might influence! Dream signing for United for years, still love to see him in a United shirt. But can't believe how time is flown and the age he is. Bayern only really sell when they haven't use for player/they are damaged goods. Be a bit worried if they did let him go easily, especially with the connection he has with the club. They totally screwed us over with Hargreaves.

With Mata in front of them? I genuinely wouldn't know how to describe the level of improvement we'd see when compared to our current crop.

Think Bayern selling would be more to do with him not fitting into Pep's system than him being damaged goods. There were stories during the season that Pep felt Schweinsteiger didn't move the ball on quickly enough for that role. Stories they were open to selling this summer too.

Think this is the big name we're most likely to get and by some distance too.
