Bastian Schweinsteiger

Still a decent enough source. As good as you're going to get. Still cannot believe the guy will ever leave Bayern, he's a lifer there.

Manchester United are pressing ahead with plans to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger after identifying the Bayern Munich and Germany player as a leading midfield target this summer.

Louis van Gaal is also keen to bring Kevin Strootman to Old Trafford, but with the Holland midfielder not expected to return to action until the autumn after a serious knee injury, any prospective transfer would be unlikely to be formally completed until next year should Roma, his club, want to sell.

Although Van Gaal has made purchasing a world-class central defender his priority after the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic — Mats Hummels, of Borussia Dortmund, is a target — the incoming manager is also determined to address United’s weaknesses in midfield. David Moyes, who was sacked as United manager in April, had been keen to sign Toni Kroos — in addition to one of Cesc Fàbregas, Paul Pogba or Arturo Vidal — but Van Gaal has asked the United hierarchy to focus on Schweinsteiger, Kroos’s Bayern and Germany team-mate whom he managed during his two-year spell in charge of the Bavarian giants.

Schweinsteiger enters the final two years of his contract at Bayern this summer and Pep Guardiola, the coach of the German champions, is believed to be prepared to part company with the 29-year-old for the right price. A key lieutenant under Jupp Heynckes, Schweinsteiger — who would cost about £25 million — is not thought to enjoy the same relationship with Guardiola and is willing to consider leaving the club he first joined as a 13-year-old.

United had hoped to do a chunk of their transfer business before the World Cup, but Moyes’s sacking threw a spanner in the works, especially with Van Gaal telling the club to end their pursuit of certain targets identified by his predecessor.

A deal with Southampton for Luke Shaw, the England left back, has been agreed in principle and is likely to be announced after the World Cup, with United eager to tie up other potential signings.

Van Gaal is also a keen admirer of Strootman. The midfielder would have played a central role under Van Gaal in the World Cup but the player suffered a cruciate ligament injury to his left knee in March during a game against Napoli and was forced to undergo surgery.

Strootman is expected to return to action in September and United will probably wait to see how he recovers from the injury before attempting to tie up a deal, but it seems likely that the club will look to put in some groundwork this summer. Van Gaal had also been interested in Thomas Müller but the Germany forward has just signed a new five-year contract with Bayern.

With Ryan Giggs — who will serve as Van Gaal’s No 2 — having announced his retirement from playing, Anderson expected to leave this summer and doubts over the futures of Marouane Fellaini, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley, strengthening the midfield is vital.

I'd be delighted if we could get Schweinsteiger and Strootman in. I still think if we can get the latter through a medical we might well try and do it this summer, simply because Roma might be more reluctant to sell in January, if they are competing for Cups/a place in Europe. That is dependent on his progress and recovery of course.

I'm probably being greedy, but I'd love Bastian and Pogba.

If we had Schweiny and Strootman in midfield, i'd finally go into a Manchester derby without feeling like we were an under 11 side playing the big boys.

I'm hoping for Scweinsteiger, Sanchez, Strootman and Shaw - The four esses.

Sanchez based on nothing but gut feeling.

Hopefully we're not being lead down a blind alley. What's his contract situation?

Strootman for January? That'll be excellent, but we need two midfielders. I hope we don't stop with Schweinsteiger.

Schweinsteiger will just be this summers Fabregas and when he is ironically available next summer we then won't be interested. It's simply never going to end :(

The rumours around Sanchez seem to have been stronger recently that those around Schweinsteiger or Strootman... Before for the last hour anyway.

Anyone know what's being reported about Schweinsteiger in Germany? Is this only in the English press or is there talk over there too?

We'll be a year too late, and have to watch everyone else celebrating. Like the Ibrahimovic of transfer windows... :(

The Times is reliable but it's better to take a wait and see, skeptical approach. This would be a hard transfer to pull off, let's see if LvG can work some magic.

He's brilliant but he'll be 30 come the start of the season and he's increasingly injury-prone. I wouldn't be happy with him as our only midfield signing, I want some long term quality as well.

I want long term as well, but I'd rather fix the short term with the view of fixing the long term by next summer, than not fix anything at all.

Would be a quality signing but we'd need more than just him this summer given how rubbish our midfield is.

The thing is Bastian is the type that could go on until he's 35. Look at Carrick, he had his best ever season with us the season before last at 32 years of age. It's not a worry of we sign him.

I reckon no one would argue with that but I see no reason for it to be either/or.

He can be our midfield bastard.

I'll just be annoyed if we pair him with Carrick or Cleverley. We clearly need someone else as well.

Schweinsteiger , Carrick, with Mata in front as the creator, then next year replace Carrick with Strooman.

Carrick is still a really good player IMO just needs LvG to get him back playing well again, Cleverley not so sure about anymore to be honest.

I don't doubt LVG will get him playing well again, but for me it's a case of either/or. Playing the both will be slow as hell, i think.

He will need a box-to-box player next to him, IMO. He and Carrick wouldn't work.

Very sceptical about this. Don't see any reason why he would leave.. Hopefully we will actually end up signing some
decent players because our lack of action so far, is frustrating to say the least

Ducker says it's happening, most likely it is. I'm truly excited about the prospect of him joining us. Ducker generally isn't one to post random stuff unless there's truth to it.

Yup.
The day Fabregas signs, we get another article from Woodward's gang us signing x,y,z player. False hope and all that...
