600 passes

In their record breaking performance against Sociedad last season (938 passes - most by a team in La Liga history), Xavi was responsible for 120 of them. Also this season, up until 16 January when there had been 18 games played in the Liga, Xavi's total number of completed passes was 1830 which makes it an average completed passes per game of 101.67. He cleared that by a fair bit didn't he?

Thanks stato.

He's made around 1100 passes in the CL this year, in the first leg he made 134 and in the second leg he made 169 (95% accuracy for both).

He made 572 passes but not all of them counted towards statistics.

169 passes in 90 minutes is unreal. Showed how badly they shat on Chelsea, I guess.

Puts into perspective the acclaim for Schweinsteiger completing 101 over 120 minutes (would have been 76 in 90 minutes)

I'd also really like to know the German bloke's % completed, for comparison.

You can't really compare Schweinsteiger to Xavi Pogue. He's in a world of his own. Real are also miles better than Chelsea, and they were at home.

Schweinstiger was 82% with 68 passes....they showed it in the game. He usually hits around those numbers for pass completion.

Not quite sure why the stats differ so dramatically but WhoScored has Schweinsteiger down as 121 passes with 88%, maybe it was 101 in full-time?

About the 65 minute mark I think....pretty much matches up with 100-120 overall number though.

FourFourTwo use opta stats and have Bastian down as:

90 mins:
89 passes, 80 successful - 89.8%

120 mins:
121 passes, 107 successful - 88.4%

Handy numbers. And the comparison with Xavi is ridiculous, Xavi plays in a team set-up to pass the other team to death.

Strange that WhoScored also use Opta but get very different results.

Whoscored

121 - 88% = 107 successful

Look the same to me bro -_-

The obsession with number of passes made by each player is a strange one.

Not really. Stats can be a misleading thing, but when it comes to midfielders, passes completed and their percentage is a *fairly* accurate thing. Just look how far ahead Xavi is, it's indictive of the fact that he's comfortably the worlds best midfielder.

Carrick has definitely made over 100 passes this year, I remember it happening.

Well Schweinstiger only averages 66.....and FAR less in the CL. So kind of selective usage of stats there. I think both him and Kroos got more passes than they are used to thanks to Reals tactics, especially after going 2-0 up in the second leg...

Football in "stats make no real sense, nor are they the best arbitrator of the important elements of the game" shocker.

also, Schweinstiger is a hell of a player, and I would love to see him at Utd.

Yup, I'm quite curious by this as well.

I think I remember the stat being thrown around after the Cup game away at Liverpool. Whoscored don't cover the FA Cup as extensively as the PL so someone would have to check it elsewhere. Guardian Chalkboards, Telegraph statzone etc. seem to be all down.

Also, Swansea away? I remember him being ridiculously accurate in that game.

Stats and tactics almost explain pretty much everything in football though....theres only a handful of anomalies per year...one being this week I guess....but if stats meant nothing, backroom staff wouldn't have been looking at these things for decades and decades.

Nah, just responding to Pogue. He said Carrick's average passing has been higher than Schweinstiger in the Madrid game.

vs Stoke – attempted and completed more passes than any other player with 129/139 (93%)
vs Swansea – attempted and completed more passes than any other player with 92/96 (96%)
vs Liverpool – attempted and completed more than any other player with 92/98 (94%)

Highest three, accurate as of February 13th, 2012.

We need to sign his girlfriend to a full time contract to be the official model of Manchester United. After a year of her being away he'll turn in a transfer request to follow her.

Sorry, but those teams do not compare to playing Madrid, away, and in the CL semis - no matter what Liverpool would have you think

Plus, I love Carrick as much as the next person, but how many of those were sideways or behind? Schweinsteiger was always trying to press forward.
