Him and Carrick should easily be able to play 30 games each to a very high level if managed well. We need experience and leadership in the spine of the team and he more than any other player we've been linked to brings that. It's a no brainer at £10m with a 2+1 year contract.

Our CM options according to redcafe:
Gundogan -> just came back from a big injury, does not look back to his best, do not want.
Strootman -> too many injuries, it's over for him, do not want.
Vidal -> just recovered from a knee injury and does not look back to his best this season, do not want.
Pogba -> too expensive, a cnut, stupid agent, the media will have a field day, cost too much, do not want.
Schweinsteiger -> too old, too injury prone, on the decline, do not want.

Damn, this crowd is surely hard to please.

It's never as unanimous as you make it sound. There are skeptics about every player though just as there are people on here who want us to buy everyone and their mother.

But in general I would say we need a strategy of buying players that does exclude players 27 or older and those who have missed more than 30% of the games they could have played for their club over the last 3 seasons.

They're all valid points, i think we should be able to find another solid CM in Europe the way we found Herrera.

Pogba excluded I think the whole Hargreaves situation still bugs people or they deflect because they don't want to be disappointed if they move elsewhere. At the end of the day every player you have mentioned there is better than what we currently have, players do actually recover too, Hargreaves aside.
Apart from Strootman I have watched all of these players often this year being the transfer muppet that I am.
I think Gundogan and Schweinsteiger would both be great additions (price and talent), one can be with us for years whilst the other will bring a winning mentality and bags of experience with him and still provide a few seasons at the top. Also Herrera will only improve with a better caliber of midfield around him and they would all compliment each other well with Schweinsteiger sat deepest in the Pirlo mold.
Carrick and Blind when needed would provide a more defensive aspect to our game.

Schweinsteiger became a leader at Bayern because of his 300+ appearances for the club. Our best captains in recent times was a player we bought from a relegated Nottingham Forest when he was 21 and someone we bought from Spartak Moscow when he was 24. You usually become a leader by years of experience and excellence at that club. I do not think we need to import "leadership".

Bastian Schweinsteiger would be an amazing signing for us in my opinion. He'd be an upgrade on Carrick (which is high praise as far as I'm concerned because Carrick has been excellent for us) plus he has that added "never say die" attitude that we seem to be lacking when we're chasing the game in the final 20 minutes. The dude just doesn't give up, and we'll need that type of personality to keep the players around him focused when we're playing Bayern in the final of next year's Champions League. or against Stoke in the Capital One Cup Third Round

We need to import when you dont have any nor you dont know which player will become a leader.

30 isnt old. He could play 4 or 5 years more easily.

His age is not a problem, 30 isn't old at all, we cant afford to replace Carrick with another injury prone CM, where is the sense in that? I'm up for signing him as he is obviously a great player, still think we need a long term solution to our CM problem.

It's amazing that people consider a 31 (soon to be 31) year old midfielder 'old' when other, much vaunted players in the same role last easily into their mid-30's, often finding their best form there.

EDIT: The injury stuff however is valid, though I think it's less to do with age and more to do with.. well.. him. I'm not an expert on his career though so I expect I'll be roundly humiliated if I'm wrong.

You can say that again.

Leadership has to happen naturally. We should not be signing players for their "leadership".

Darren Fletcher was immediately given West Brom's captaincy when he signed, because he was a natural leader.

We don't have one in the squad.

West Brom is not the model I want to go with when it comes to running this club.

West Bromwich Albion not Barcelona, not Real Madrid, not Bayern, not Chelsea, not even Arsenal.

There is no perfect models, we lost the experience last summer and we need to fix that by bringing it from outside.

If someone like Rooney or Carrick came to them this also would happen

Rooney has been here for a long time, Carrick has been here for a long time. And Jones and Smalling have been here long enough that they can start stepping up as leaders.

You can say that again.

129 apps for club and country in last three seasons. If we got 3 years out of him like this it would be a sound investment. Not sure why he is perceived to be so long term injury prone. If reported price is realistic and he wants move then it would be a no brainer IF another CM is also being signed.

You don't know what experience and leadership are, if you allow yourself to mention Smalling and Jones in a discussion about Schweinsteiger.
Smalling and Jones have no experience, Jones isn't even sure to be starter material.

You can only be a leader if you are on the pitch. He has been injured a lot in the last couple of years, that should be our concern; his quality is not in doubt.

@Blackwidow @Balu - Can you please enlighten us? Thanks in advance.

How long does he have left on his current deal? I can't help think another player may be using us to get a good last pay deal.

You can only be a leader if you are on the pitch.

Not at all, training ground and locker room leadership are what is important. You are all talking about bringing young players who will stay at the club for a long time, but you need a solid group of 'old' players who will establish the standards for them.

Would be nice addition to the squad, short contract of 2+ yrs would do.
