Did the player get on particularly well with van Gaal during his time in Munich? Hoping, if anything does, that might tempt him to come here this summer.
If I remember correctly, Schweini actually defended van Gaal after he was fired. They never had any problems, I'm pretty sure they respect each other a lot.

Bastian would put Carrick on the bench.

I'd bet my house, my car and my girlfriend that if Carrick is fit, he's Van Gaal's first name on the team sheet, Bastian or no Bastian.

So we'll have two 30's CM's on the treatment table next season.

I'm fine with the transfer if we get another younger holding CM, but to go into next season with him and Carrick is a silly gamble.

Well signing Bastian wouldn't make much sense then. As good as they both are, I don't see them excelling all that much in a two. It should be either/or with the likes of Herrera and (ideally) Schneiderlin ahead of one.

if Iam being honest I would prefer a younger player, but for £7.5m , he would improve our midfield.

Agree, for £7.5m hard to say no. But you get the impression with his age that it's only a stop gap signing. We'd still be looking for a younger player who can dominate our midfield for the next 5-10 years.

We can definitely get him for that fee IF he wants to leave, but I don't think he wants to leave, I'll really love to be proven wrong but I think he's just using us as leverage to get what he wants at his current club, our inability to smell this "BS" time and time and again is amazing.

Really? Signing him for a nominal fee wouldn't make sense?

Considering Carrick is unlikely to play 40+ games, having him and Bastian play 20-30 each would be ideal and if they're both fit Bastian could play ahead of him no problem with Herrera doing the leg work alongside him.

It make sense...with Carrick and Swine'sTiger's respective injury records both will be fit for parts of the season.

Van Gaal is hoping that whe one is fit the other is injured....but knowing our luck they will get injured in the same time. For six weeks.

If he is fit and healthy, we could get at least 3 or 4 years out of him and that would be great. Having said this ,if he can avoid major
Injury problem of course.

It wouldn't make much sense if the decision was to play them regularly in midfield together. Carrick and Bastian are good but it isn't a very dynamic pair and it would put a lot of pressure on Herrera to cover ground.

Like I said, if he signed, and I'd like him to, I'd rather see one of them on the pitch with two other more suitable midfielders.

Anyhow, their injury issues will probably ensure this happens anyway, so it probably isn't a big deal at all.

That would probably be the right way to do it, both seem a bit injury prone and don't have the legs they used to but if rotated correctly (20+ games each like you say) it means both would be getting the proper rest needed to stunt injury and reasonable game time, it is a stop gap until we find a younger player to fill the position long term but for around 7m we should definitely consider getting him on board...He's quality with bags of experience, It's a steal in my opinion.

Injury problems aside, it's mental to talk about his age like that.

Pirlo was 32 when he signed for Juve, Alonso 32 signing for Bayern, Scholes was 31 in 2006 (the year our latest great team kicked on), Lampard played nearly 300 games for Chelsea beyond his 31st Birthday winning a League, FA Cup, UCL and EL.

He could play a huge role for us over the next 4 years and his experience would be a huge merit.

Schweinsteiger is 30 FFS. He doesn't have to be rotated, and will almost surely be first choice. Its Carrick who will be gradually eased out.

7.5m or even 12m is nothing for us. The Carrick and Schweinsteiger option is a good headache, we want to compete everywhere, plenty of games for everyone.

I just hope we go for a proper box to box midfielder too, without Herrera there is no one to fill in.

Redcafe has always been like this. I think it has to do with the video games that the players numbers go down as they hit a certain age. At 30 a player is in his full prime both in his body and mind. Great clubs don't need to think about sell on value, and shouldn't even think about sell on value. You buy a player to keep him in your team and get the most out of him until he's not performing well enough. And when you come to the bottom line it's more about how the player takes care of himself. There are players who are getting worse even before they hit 27 while other player become better after 30. So feck that shit.

Alonso had a horrible year at bayern, so using him to support your argument is weird.

Im pretty sure LVG still has good contacts at Bayern and probably knows his agent well enough too

Fixating on his one "horrible" year at Bayern and ignoring the other successful examples mentioned is more weird.

Out of his four great examples, one of them wasnt successful. The majority of players cant play to a higher level after hitting 30. That has been proven, to say that video games are to be blamed for this phenomena is just plain stupid. How did RVP and Falcao did last year? The same argument was put forward for the both of them.

Alonso has had successful seasons since hitting 30 so I'm not sure why you're saying he wasn't successful. Bringing strikers into an argument on midfielders is silly as well. It's pretty obvious midfielders last longer at the higher level since the physical attributes required aren't as demanding. Loads more examples along with those that Pexbo mentioned to back that up - Gattuso, Seedorf, Davids, Gerrard, Carrick, Xavi, Keane, Effenberg, Matthaus, Iniesta. Plenty of more names I could think of as well.

Would be interested to hear of similar examples where a previously top quality central midfielder lost his way after hitting 30.

Scholes, Carrick, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Pirlo, Yaya Toure...

In fact the best midfielders today are 30, past 30 or near 30 - add Modric and Vidal.

So apparently Jan Fjortofts guy who is closest to Munich reckons Schweini has no intention of leaving Bayern...thanks for nothing Sunday Mirror/People

Giggs, Speed, Cambiasso, Vidic, Evra, Totti, Terry, Robben, Lampard, Ribery, Zlatan, Lahm....

What do they all have in common? Quality players who use/d their brains as well as their bodies

7.5 m or 10 m sign him if he's available,we would never get quality player like Bastian. He has got good 4-5 years left in him.

I hope we give Munich or Schweinsteiger a deadline or we could see both our targets slipping away. I'd rather have Schneiderlin if it's one or the other but both would be ideal.

There should be no question of one holding up the other as they are different and complementary players.

This has the hallmarks of everything that's horrible about transfer season.

1. Unsourced bullshit/clickbait article
2. Other sites linking to the same unsourced bullshit for their own clickbait
3. Exuberant RedCafe twitter bot posts unsourced/clickbait tweet as if it's a legitimate news story
4. RedCafe posters discuss, unsourced/clickbait bullshit as if its real
5. Later, and not surprisingly, the transfer never happens.
6. Shortly thereafter, posters are perplexed why LvG didn't go for Schweinsteiger since we were "linked with him" all summer
7. Other posters then question LvG's historical weakness in the transfer market and point to Schweini as the latest example.

Rinse and repeat....

He'll probably sign a new contract soon

just the yearly Schweinsteiger rumour.

Nothing to see here.

Who cares? This squad is starving for leaders, there's no one there. Schweinsteiger is a great leader, he'll bring composure to the team and will permit the likes of Herrera, Di Maria and Blind to settle down. Also we would need to spend big money elsewhere specifically the defense.

We not lacking characters, we lacking straight out quality in this team. Yea lets buy yet another ageing star, how about buy them in their prime not ending their peak

you tell me which character can lead this team onward. rooney? this has been told he has been the best player of ours for the last two seasons and we ended with the 7th & the 4th position respectively. provide facts to back up your argument

There's no question about that, but, why are we always linked to these top players when they are in contract negotiations? Did we go in for him or is his agent offering him to us etc. At the end of the day, the agent will do what is best for his client, not LVG. [that is assuming he wants new contract at Bayern].
