Just been bawling his eye out during the presentation.
God, I'm not even German and it was emotional watching that.
Feel bad for him now!
Surprised he was so emotional. Nice moment though. Hope he plays well tonight!

Can anyone translate what he says in his speech?
Thanks the fans for coming; thanking the German football federation. That's about all I caught from the commentator

They put a very experimental team in for the first half - it is a friendly. Only Kimmich, Hector and partly Götze are "normal". I guess they want the others on the pitch when he will finally leave the pitch in the second half.

They had only a day preperation, too. And Ter Stegen is in goal - and Ter Stegen and the German national team is a story full of fails...

But I guess for the ones that want to see talents for the next "transfer window"... - that will be a good show...

Still hope he plays well even if it's a friendly....
Regardless it's a nice send off anyway...
Quite sick it's not worked out here for him, but that's the business of football..

Good in him, great to see how much it means. He comes over as a pretty likable dude I must admit, with the wishes from our players and the way he's handled his situation here. If he stays, I hope he manages to fight his way into the team. Will be a great lesson for all our young players, that even someone with his history has to give it all.

He's been written off by fans and media before every single tournament since 2008, yet he always performed. The only exception maybe was the world cup in south africa.
Maybe this year at United will be the german national team for him all over again.

Well Carrick certainly played better than Schweinsteiger last season, and better than any other of our midfielders too and has been our best centre midfielder in the past seasons since Scholes retired. I still hope he does well, but Schneiderlin was the worst performing centre midfielder last season (could be due to LVG etc. as no one really played well).

No he didn't. When Schweinsteiger actually played *injury plagued* he was comfortably our best deep laying midfielder. He was composed on the ball in a way nobody has been for us since Scholes. He was calm, and oozed class. LVG may have played him idiotically, but that can hardly be layed at the feet of the player. The player carries out the managers game plan.

In fact, the time Schweinsteiger played before Christmas, he was IMO comfortably our best midfielder full stop. Now, does that mean he is going to fit into this team if Mourinho thinks his legs are gone? No. However, despite his injury plagued season, he was still pretty good. If you watch our midfield performances last year, it was night and day between when he was playing and when he wasn't. He'd come on, instant stability, back four were protected. He went off, everything went to shit and we started conceding goals like crazy on the break.

I think that he'd be one of our two best partners for Pogba atm. He'd be a fantastic outlet for Pogba and his skill and composure on the ball and always being in position to receive that outlet pass is vital for when our more energetic midfielders find themselves in a blind alley. Schneiderlin would probably be the best partner to provide pure defensive cover if Pogba is going full rambo.

When does the MLS transfer window re-open? Seems daft him retiring from International football given his current club situation

Still ridiculous to me the way he's been treated. Much better than Fellaini, Herrera or Schneiderlin.

Schweinsteiger has just said on german TV "I've a contract at Manchester United till June 2018.......the atmosphere at Old Trafford is amazing and i want to have that feeling again......i want to play again for the First team".

I'd use him in the Europa league, it seems stupid to have such a high profile name on the books and not give him a game. The Europa league means little to us, let him play.

Would be over the moon if he could fight his way back in the first team, but i dont see it. He will not be in the first team squad til get shipped to the MLS. He is obviously saying the right things, but i think the decision was made and will stay like that.

Well it ain't happening.

The noise will probably die down soon though.

Jose has never been one to relent to media or fan pressure either. It doesn't matter what his profile is.

It's all about wages isn't it? Jose has been told to make cuts and Bastian is likely one of our highest earners.

Weren't the papers saying Rooney and Carrick were the ones who were furious with Schweini's lack of commitment and trips to Germany?

Both seem quite chummy with him social media wise...

Yeah that's why I posted. It's a strange situation, even more so if he is going to be with us until January doing nothing.

Everyone keeps saying it's about wages.

But there is no proof whatsoever that is true

It's more plausible that a manager simply doesn't rate him and rather prefers the Fellaini's and Herrera's of this world(Less fancied names for the CAF certainly).

It's difficult for some to fathom. So the conspiracy theories run rampant.

Hopefully. What a story that would be.

Next season.

And to retire from international football isn't "daft" given his current club situation.

He's not going to get a game with us so why withdraw himself from a side that may still select him?

His performance for the last world cup was heroic. Gave absolutely everything in that final. One of the best midfield performances I've ever seen.
The way he's leaving us leaves a bitter taste. "Legend" is thrown up and down. This guy is a legend.

Mou is getting lots of shit for this but I genuinely think it simply comes down to Basti's injury record - does anyone think he could go all or most of the season with at least one decent spell on the injury list?

If he was a younger player it would be worth taking the risk, but we're talking about the high end of elite sport. Mou wants us back at the top and we're not going to do that with injury prone players who are in their mid thirties. It's business and not personal.

Everyone knows Basti in his prime is better than the likes of Fella and Hererra but it doesn't matter how good he is if he's sat in the physio room most of the season.

I can't think of a reason to exclude him now that's he's still here, still on the payroll so he can at least train with the first team like everybody else.

No one wanted him or several other players in our squad that were undoubtedly available due to prohibive wages relative to their talent and output.

There's a very good reason.

Mourinho thinks there's better options than him.
