Bastian Schweinsteiger | Exit Speculation

Clearly they aren't great mates otherwise the only picture they have together wouldn't be the one from when he first signed.

I would rather hang out with Basti, he seems like a nicer/cooler guy than Rooney

There's a very good reason.

Mourinho thinks there's better options than him.
He doesn't need to start or be in the match day squad if there are players more deserving of a place, but i don't see a problem with him being treated like all the other players now that he's guaranteed to be here until December. He's got undeniable quality. There's no benefit to him being excluded from the first team that i can see.

Yeah same here. Rooney will probably try to get you into some granny shagging after boxing each other.

Weren't the papers saying Rooney and Carrick were the ones who were furious with Schweini's lack of commitment and trips to Germany?

Yeah that's why I posted. It's a strange situation, even more so if he is going to be with us until January doing nothing.

Both seem quite chummy with him social media wise...

Whether they like each other or not, it would be a bit strange if Rooney really was the guy who was questioning his commitment. Didn't our captain manage to get himself knocked out when he was boxing in his own kitchen just last season?

And then there was the camera's capturing him trying to sneakily drink a pint of beer a couple of years ago, when he was out injured watching the game at Old Trafford. And of course the countless photo's of him smoking during the off season. You can't question his dedication on the pitch, but outside of that Rooney has hardly been a model professional, so if he's genuinely been the one questioning Schweinsteiger's commitment then the German must have been up to some real uninspiring stuff.

All players seem to love him and rightly so. He comes across as a nice guy. Can understand Mourinho's point of view and playing with squad of 26, but now that he is here, why not make better use of him? If he is training with first team squad and is doing good, he can get in ahead of couple of others or be in good shape when we have annual injury crisis.

He is like that unwanted guest who won't leave. Thought he would have more pride.

Bastian fecking Schweinsteiger!

This thread is funny. He was left out of the first team squad because we have enough options in our midfield that the manager thinks are all more deserves to be in the squad than him.The manager even hinted that he might use some academy players ahead of Bastian. He should have moved on.It's not like he's a legend at this club to receive special treatment.

He's my favorite German player growing up watching football but every football player will decline at some point and we need to be realistic.

I wouldn't have minded him being excluded if he was shit but he's arguably our second best midfielder.

A fully fit and motivated Schweinsteiger maybe, but that guy has not turned up at united.

Was our best midfielder last year till he got injured. But meh anyway no point, this discussion is going around in circles. Either he will come back or he won't. Still a legend of the game in my eyes.

I think the fact that Sweinsteiger is willing to sit in the stands and literally play no part in any of our games (until potentially being picked for the squad of 23 when the window re-opens in January) instead of moving on, says a lot about his character. Certainly makes Mourinho's choice to drop him appear to be justified.

He really should have moved on. Not playing football for some time will hurt him a lot. Strange that he decided to stay.

The dream lives on.

I think. For now. :nervous:

Still reckon it's a free transfer exit soon. That's still possible right?

That's what I've been thinking, too. I thought he had more about himself than wanting to just earn a paycheck without actually doing anything, but it's our fault for signing him in the first place I suppose. Still, I would've thought he'd prefer to end his career playing than sitting in Uniteds U-21.

I've not said much on this topic.

But it would be a huge credit to him, and a massive feel-good story, if he actually buckles down now, works super hard on his fitness/injury record and wins Jose over. It would also add to our options in midfield to partner Pogba.

I can genuinely see how, being constantly injured/unfit and flying out of the country at every opportunity to go back to Germany or follow your wife around on tour, wouldn't go down well with the rest of the squad and now, supposedly, the manager. Even if he got the permission from LvG to do so.

He should have been more committed, especially as he's seen as a leader and senior figure, on fairly big wages. He might have earned such "leeways" at Bayern for his service, but coming to a new country, a new club trying to fight their way back to the top - that attitude simply wasn't needed. I'm not saying he was unprofessional (especially as he seemingly got permission from LvG) but yeah, the timing was far from ideal.

But yeah, imagine a team with Pogba, Ibrahimovich, a fit and injury free BFS in it  We lacked leaders a few years ago, but it's certainly not the case at the moment.

Looks like a pretty dismal ending to a glittering career. I was really excited he was on board for a couple of years but it's all gone a bit meh.

So I presume that Bayern weren't interested in 'saving' their legend from playing in horrible conditions (U21) while cashing 200k a week

Or he has belief he can turn it around. Beckham was very publically frozen out at Madrid and got back into the side.

He's happy to collect a big paycheck without having to do anything. I'd take a job like that in a heartbeat, too.
If you are a professional footballer, your goal should be to play. He can do feck all once he retires. It's not that he needs money

No International football and now no chance of a move until January at least. Either he gets stuck in with the reserves and tries to force himself into Mourinho's plans or he is just after the money.

Would be great if he did have one last hurrah, even in the Europa League.

A players's career is weird. They make ridiculous amount of money when they are relatively young (and therefore immature) and then they retire at around age 35. By that time they are used to a certain standard of living and its very difficult for a person to cut back on that once he retires.

Bastian has won everything there is to win so he cant care less of adding more medals to what he already have. Players in his condition would usually use their reputation in the club to overstay for a year or two and keep on cashing (Gaz, Gerrard, Keane etc). However Bastian was lucky that some foreign club, whom he has no attachment to. A club which was stupid enough to offer a player who was a bit of a surplus at Bayern a 3 year contract on ridiculous salary to sign with them.

Thanks to that deal he will be able to keep on cashing on his fading career without making himself look silly in front of his Germany/Bayern fans. It also allowed him to remain in Europe ie pretty close to his girlfriend whose a professional tennis player. Playing with United has its perks. Unlike the MLS/China, Man United has plenty of expertise in dealing with injured football players. That allowed Bastian to remain on top condition for the Euros. It also allowed him to extend his image right deals for another year or two. No one gives a crap about a former Germany player who plays for New York Red Bulls or Chongqing Lifan

I bet that Gary Neville would have rather made himself look silly against a German side while wearing Dortmund stripes then against West Brom, in front of his own fans while representing the team he loved so much.

So he didn't leave? Saw that video of him getting salty before his international game. It choked me up a bit, he's had a great career. Didn't really work out for him here.

Haven't been following this saga as close as I should have. Is the consensus now that he's finished at United, and will leave? That would be a shame, if so. Undeniably a great player - although whether he ever really showed his absolute best for us, i'm not sure.

As some of us thought at the time, expecting a 31 year old, potentially injury prone Schweinsteiger to replicate the form of a 26 year old Schweinsteiger, in a new league, was always going to be a big ask.

This is also why Pogba feels like such a big signing. A player with a world class reputation, and his best years still ahead of him.

Should be trotted out for League Cup and Europa League games as some sort of charity farewell tour. Should probably throw in a cup song at some point too.

Why? The manager doesn't want to use him, so he won't.

Exactly, so no real harm in him coming off the bench in our least important games. Mourinho doesn't want him, but he is here for at most a year, so might as well use him to our advantage (his experience could be useful in some of these games).

I wouldn't be surprised if Jose has him on the bench in those games.

He's whack. From 2014-2015 (Bayern) he was nothing special in his 20+ league games. In fact when comparing defensive and offensive duties, even Ander Herrera in his 1st season at United was superior. Look at things like chances created, tackles won, interceptions, goals, pass completion, Key Passes etc and Bastian falls short. People who think he is good are living in the past. its nostalgia. Pep is no fool. To call him our 2nd best midfielder is a crime against humanity. He's washed up kid!

From the noises he's making he's obviously really happy to be here. If he wants to stay and hopefully one day earn a place back in the first time squad then fair play to him. We gave him the contact, why shouldn't he stay and earn his wages? It's not like he himself is choosing not to play is it?

I'd actually be quite surprised. The squad is quite huge as it is, players who do have more chance of a future here haven't made the bench once yet either. Fixtures will pile up, sure, but we still have Schneiderlin, Herrera and Carrick ahead of him, alongside the first two starters so far. I reckon that'll tide us over until January - when I think he'll leave on a free to the MLS or somewhere.

I think he wants to prove himself to Mourinho, if that doesn't work until the next transfer window opens he'll be off to the MLS. That's what i think will happen.

I did just that and they are actually pretty even.

Comparison 2014/2015

Schweinsteiger created more chances, had more assists, more key passes and played more forward passes (beeing almost equal in pass completion) than Herrera while playing six games less.
Part of that surely coincides with Bayern being as dominant as they are and United having an underwhelming season finishing fourth.
Herrera had more defensive errors, won more tackles, had more clearances etc. because Bayern usually don't get pressured all that much in the league, while United had to do a lot more defending.
Stats of players can be misleading because they don't factor in the teams they play for. I'd say Herrera having better stats in defense and Schweinsteiger having better stats in offense during the 2014/15 campaign comes down to their respective team's style of play and won't tell us much about the difference in quality, which should be marginal.

Still Schweinsteiger's injury problems are a concern. During 2014/15 he missed the first 11 league games du to injury and it took him quite some time to get back into shape. That considered his stats are actually quite good for a central midfielder without a preseason. Herrera had to adapt to the league which is something quite a few players struggle to do successfully, so his stats are quite good as well. If both players are fit it's more about preferences. Ander gives you more movement and agressiveness while Schweinsteiger (if fit) has better vision, a better shot and more aerial presence. Still, if partnered with Pogba I'd probably prefer a fit Schweinsteiger over Ander, and since he's bound to stay for a few months more at least, why not play him if fit? I'd be very surprised if Mourinho continues to let him train with the reserves now that forcing him out didn't work.
