Bastian Schweinsteiger | Exit Speculation

Thats Fellaini, Herrera, Morgan, Carrick, Blind and TFM in the first team squad that can play in midfield. It would take one hell of an inury crisis to even have him back training with the first team, never mind playing . Bastian isnt even part of the first team

Blind's our first choice centre back at the minute and TFM wouldn't (in my opinion, I may be wrong) be picked to play in midfield right now; neither were mentioned by Mourinho as options in central midfield.

So Carrick, Fellaini, Herrara, Morgan, and Pogba are our 5. Carrick can't play two games in a week anyway so all it takes is two injuries to one of the other two players and we'd need a player to rotate with him.

I don't think Mourinho is keeping Bastian out of the team out of spite so it would be daft not to use him if he's still here. I think we'll see a bit of him once the fixtures start mounting up.

Really?

We're hardly overly blessed in central midfield despite what Mourinho says. Two injuries and he'd be next in line.

It's nothing to do with our squad size. It's clear that Mourinho doesn't want him so I can't see him playing regardless of what happens.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if he's still here after the window closes he'll get minutes. It doesn't seem like they have a personal conflict, it's just that Bastian doesn't fit in Mourinho's ideal team - but if he gets to play I'd think that he'll be incredibly determined to prove his level and professionalism and maybe he'll convince Mou of his worth

Completely forgot about Pogba too when I mentioned out midfielders.

Jose would not send a player to the reserves that he has plans with. He would want to train him himself. That's why the likes of Darmian,Depay and Carrick hardly ever make the matchday squad but are still training with the first team. Jose has even gone out of his way to promise those ones games in future. There is little likelihood of Bastian coming in ahead of them and playing.

Jose has already mentioned how big this squad is relative to what he wants to work with. We aren't adding any more players to this 26(of which Bastian isn't even a member of). It's even more remote when you realise that Bastian isn't even playing reserve football for us.

It's beyond remote that we will see him play again for us. Maybe in a legends match, but even then our relationship won't be that great I think.

It's bizarre he's not been linked with anyone in Europe, let alone the PL. At this stage, you would usually have a few clubs trying to negotiate something by now.
He's made it clear he does not want to play for anyone else in Europe. He's off to the MLS in January

It makes sense for him to at least play for the reserves in case we have a huge injury crisis. Surely, he'd rather play for the reserves than not play at all?

There is little evidence to back the point that this is wage related.

If we were so hellbent on saving wages, we could have easily have not renewed Carrick's contract.

Its much more likely that Bastian simply knows that he wont find another club in this period, and has no plans to play in Europe again.

There is little to suggest that Bastian will ever play for us. Jose said it in the Summer, that all players not in his plans will not play a single minute. Nothing has changed since then.

Jose wants Carrick though, big difference there.

I think you've missed my point a little in mentioning Carrick here, I'm not saying Jose wants Bastian and has frozen him out due to wages; I'm saying Jose doesn't want him and wanted to make that clear by completely freezing him out, make no mistake, wages always come into at the point a manager doesn't want a player as the club obviously do not want a completely unused player picking up 150k+ per week.

I think when the window closes wages will again come into it, and Jose will likely include Bastian more in shitty games even just on the bench once we pick up a few injuries.

With the amount of injuries he's had and number of game he's played in his career i don't think he will mind resting for the next 3/4 months picking up a good wage at the same time. I'm sure in this period he will find a club to move on to in January.

That is the main point though, Jose doesnt want Bastian, not because of his wages, but simply because he doesnt rate him.

He has Carrick for that sub role of needed.

I dont see needing a 6th MF at any point before Jan.

That does not rate him is something I do not understand as Mourinho was on the hunt to get him for several years...

I don't think he feels Bastian is fully committed to the cause. High wages and high injury record mean bye bye Bastian.

Don´t see this happening, you move a player to the reserves because you want to get rid of him and he might refuses to leave. So if he still sticks with the team and he gets minutes after the window closes he will have no reason to leave in the next window even if you downgrade him again and say he wont get minutes anymore. So in my oppionion schweinsteiger will only get minutes if there a bigger amount of injuries is happening, otherwise they will just wait and hope he leaves to the US in january

Yes.

It would make Jose look indecisive too. He's not getting back into the team.

I think he will leave first thing in Jan.

There's a huge difference between this version and the one that was being chased for several years.

Surprises me that so many people are in support of Schweinsteiger here.

He signed for United for one reason and one reason only... money. And now he refuses to leave the club cause nobody else is insane enough to pay his ridiculous salary.

On his day, I rate him as a player and think he's one of the best CMs of the past 10 years or so. But I never wanted him at United.

Having said all this, I'd still rather see him in the Starting 11 than Carrick.

As long as he's here for however many months, we may as well use him for those Europa games with the kids or the other fringe players that Jose is not using at the moment. We're still paying him and I believe if he's not injured he will be determined to do well. It's a waste of money otherwise.

We have never chosen squads simply because someone is on high wages.

We are paying his wages either way so it's a sunk cost. From all reports it appears he is not very popular with the rest of the players either.

I don't get why some are so desperate for him to play. It's certainly not because of his previous perfomances here. It seems more and more that it's borne out of sympathy and sentimentality.

You can't run a football club like that. Even at his best ,Fergie was absolutely ruthless. Getting rid of Bruce the way he did,Keane ending up in tears after being let go. Necessary evils.

Bastian is 32 year old player with little left in terms of fitness and hardly a future here.

We are a billion dollar organisation. The same one tbst could afford to pay Nani's wages while he was at another club. We can take this hit. The key is then to get him off the books at the next available opportunity. But 6 months won't kill us.

Have also heard that some players do like him. Don't know what to believe tbh. Think he pissed off some specific and powerful members of the team and they've shat on him:D
Anyway, what I'm saying is, as he's here why not play him if the need arises? Can't see anything wrong with doing that seeing as we're still paying him. Besides, I'm pretty sure he'd put in some good performances (my personal opinion only!)

I don't think the money thing is true.

He was hardly on poor wages at Bayern and they tend to give most of their legends jobs for life even after they retire. Money is certainly not a worry for him.

I do believe that he just wanted to experience something new. Unfortunately things just didn't work out.

We simply offered him such a wage because that is what top players earn in the premiership. We did the same with Falcao, Di Maria,Pogba et al.

Looks like he has his back up against the wall here; either he works his socks off and fights for a spot, or he... ehm collects his wages and runs his contract down watching tennis.

Well, at least I hope he's motivated, and goes for it. Age and form aside, didn't he fight his way back from a similar situation some time ago?

But do you see why it would just create problems? The squad harmony seems good without him and we certainly aren't missing on the field either.

The need won't arise and he performed like shit last season. Thankfully he won't be seeing a second of pitch time.

If he cared so much about our club, he could have tried harder instead of going out with his girlfriend to play tennis.

feck him, just a money-grabbing whore that wants sympathy.

Edit: I don't care if his performances were shit, I care more about the fact that he didn't try at all to help us in any way.

Inexplicable shit.
Whats inexplicable about that? Carrick is certainly not a better player than Schweinsteiger. Never has been and never will be.

If I had to decide between the two this season, it would be Bastian. But I still think Schneiderlin and Pogba is our best midfield 2. If we played a fit Schweinsteiger in the "Pirlo" role behind these two, we would be brilliant I think.

Even if you want to go by selective memory, our winning percentage last season was higher with Carrick in the team than Schweinsteiger.

That doesn't mean Schweinsteiger is a money grab either. I think he genuinely wants to have a better experience at United than the dozen or so games he played last season and go out on a better note. He is an intensely competitive individual who's won everything in club and international competition so it's fair to believe he wants to win a league title with United even if he has to play a fringe role.

Looking increasingly likely that he'll sit out until January and make an MLS move then. Terrible way to go out, but I guess he knew he hadn't got the legs in him to play in Europe anymore.

People really need to calm down. We signed him, we gave him a huge contract. Him not wanting to leave is quite understandable, really. If he wants to stay and be our social media mascot, so be it. It's quite daft to call him a "whore" etc. I've said it before, we took a risk and it backfired. Badly.

I think Mourinho will integrate him in the team in the next days, after Schweinsteiger refused to transfer and asserted his desire to play for United; I just don't think he'll keep him training in the reserves, otherwise he would simply dismiss any chance for him to play ever again, which he didn't (he just said it will be ‘very, very difficult’).

And I also think this is more about establishing discipline amongst the players than about the value or the condition of the player itself. Mourinho likes experienced players and is mostly setting an example for decisions based on (in this case, past) behavior, for everybody to see he'll dump anyone out of line; it was actually, despite all the Bayern related noise, a quite easy example to give.

There's an excess of (two) players in midfield also, which might have been an important factor on the decision. But I feel this now is a more forgiving and caring Mourinho, after the debacle of last year at Chelsea. The reaction of some players who didn't like Schweinsteiger behavior might be difficult, though.
