Awesome United pics

Shirt sales were a bit down that season....LOL. Great pictures mate. Back in the day I don't remember this side because we always came in from the canal side with Manchester Liners' offices and the old turntable bridge. Lovely to see how it's all changed.
Me too, came across the bridge. I think the youngsters would find it quite scary these days. You just can't compare going to the match via the docks to going to the match from the Lowry on Salford Quays. Different worlds.

Spot on. Some of my happiest memories were being pulled along by the hand of my grandfather (a striding 6'4" ex-navy man with massive hands) crossing railway lines, slipping in oil, looking down the side of the wharf at the polluted water, looking up at the ships moored, and dodging the working cranes. Then the talk about the game that would erupt as everyone would start chattering away near the entrance gates. Then pushed through the turnstile at the kids end in the Warwick Road and screaming for 90 minutes.

Having seen the photos from 1984 Barcelona match I've watched a video. Amtosphere sounds absolutely amazing. Surreal really.. :)

Robson couldnt get away from the fans after the match.

In 1974, many of us were wondering what novel experiences the 2nd Division would hold. On opening day at Brisbane Road, the Red Army turned up in strength to find out. It was pretty much business as usual.

1977. Tottenham away. A young United fan lies comatose on the pitch as police, stewards, and the St. Johns Ambulance boys mill around. United won 3-1 with goals from McIlroy, Macari, and Gordon Hill.

February 1977. The away end at the Dell during the FA Cup 5th round tie. Southampton had beaten us at Wembley the previous year and Southampton fans were taunting us over that. This game ended 2-2 with goals from Lou Macari and Gordon Hill. We beat them in the replay 2-1 with Jimmy Greenhoff getting both goals.

April 1974. There was a brief hope we'd avoid the drop. Victories against Norwich and Newcastle saw a rise in optimism amongst match-going fans. It rose further when we clobbered Everton 3-0 with goals from Jim McCalliog (2) and Stewart Houston. Here, Sammy Mac goes on a run.

Also winning 3-1 at Chelsea and drawing 3-3 (h) with Burnley. A 1-1 draw at Southampton was the end of five matches unbeaten. McCalliog (deadline day in March buy from Wolves - no windows) seemed to change everything at the time (goals v Newcastle, Everton and Southampton) and I loved him then! Still in the Scoreboard End, then, for the McCalliog goals.

I wish we could find more images from then.

In the '76 Cup Final, it was McCalliog that put through Stokes to beat us 1-0!

1974 again. West Ham players celebrate a goal in a 2-1 win for the home side. I recognise Clyde Best, Brooking, but I can't tell if the player in front of Buchan is Bonds or Taylor,

1974 again. Another awful defeat, this time to QPR who beat us 3-0. Stan Bowles has just scored.

See, I remember pointless stuff like this. It's New Year's Day, Houston made his debut, and is the one looking round here.

Two of the finest players ever to play for England. Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore shake hands before a league match at Upton Park circa 1969.

A rare photo of Alex Stepney winning his solitary England cap against Sweden in 1968. It was an era of great English goalkeepers and Stepney, excellent as he was, was behind Banks and Bonetti in the pecking order.

Charlton-1968.jpg

A great photo of a leaping Bobby Charlton. The opponents are Sunderland and, if memory serves, the beat us 2-1 while City beat Newcastle away 4-3 to win the title.
