Awesome United pics

This is just weird. Two old biddies appear to be having a natter on the touchline during a Spurs v. United game in the early 70s. Is this shopped or real? I have no idea.

I think they were tea Ladies who prepare the half time refreshments as it was back in the day. Im probably wrong!

Also pictured: Gowling, Charlton and Edwards (United); McGovern and Durban (Derby).

Steve Coppell against Derby. FA Cup semi-final, 1976. The Derby player is (if memory serves) David Nish. Derby were managed that day by the recently departed Dave McKay.

Young United fan from the 60s. Is this you Phil? ;)
Nice one. Too well dressed and too many teeth to be me!! I do still have my old red and white scarf from the 60s; my mum keeps it in a protective bag. The kids end in the old Warwick Road was a bit of a zoo. The dads and granddads just stood back and let us all go wild. It was also about a shilling to get in.

Not the best penalty bu McClair...

Might land in Chelsea's net next week, though...

My dad used to give me half a crown for bus fare, gate money, and a programme. My mum used to slip me two bob extra for a pie and a hot drink. Coming back from a home game against West Ham in 1967, I found a pound note on the ground. I actually took it to a copper to hand it in but he just told me to treat myself at the chippy.

Jammy bugger on two counts. The Moors murders fightened my mum so much I wasn't allowed to go to games on my own until about 1970, then only at home and after promising not to accept any lifts! It was OK with my Grandad as he always got a drink off his mates at Manchester Liners before a game. I never got a £1 note in spends until the 10/- note was dropped. Had to go around all the relatives cadging spends.

I was at grammar school in 1967 and went with three or four mates to the home games. I remember the Moors Murders well and the warnings my own mother gave me at the time but I was never stopped from playing out after school or anything like that. £1 was a lot of money for a kid back then. I could usually tap money from my dad if need be but when I was 13, I got a paper round that paid 12/6 a week plus tips at Christmas.

An awful day. David Herd lies on the pitch with a broken leg after scoring for United against Leicester. Matt Busby talks to Bobby Charlton as John Aston, Denis Law, and Gordon Banks comfort Herd. A few weeks later, Herd, still on crutches, receives his league championship medal from Matt Busby.

Another image from the same game. The camera is pointing at the Holte End which was then open to the elements. This was common for English grounds, including Old Trafford.

1962 and Jimmy Greaves scores for Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough. Spurs won 3-1 and went on to beat Burnley at Wembley. United had to wait for another year.

Our homes in Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall were by high streets so mum had this fear of drive-by snatches. Looking back it was horrible. When we moved south things gradually relaxed and eventually I was going home and away. Sadly at University a similar situation arose with the Yorkshire Ripper and walking girls home after parties in the late 70s.

Sadly at University a similar situation arose with the Yorkshire Ripper and walking girls home after parties in the late 70s.

I was in London when the Ripper was about. There really wasn't any fear down there as it was seen as a regional issue (you know what Londoners are like). They played the tape on Capital Radio but there was no hunt for him there, as far as I know. A band called The Gonads wrote a song called "Ripper's Delight" that I heard but such were the days. I also remember the papers getting upset about Leeds fans chanting "There's only one Yorkshire Ripper" at home games.

An odd split photo, well it's two side by side, of the United and Preston teams taking the field before their 1972 FA Cup match at Deepdale.

1971, and Jimmy Armfield makes his final appearance for Blackpool against United. Law scored for United in a 1-1 draw. The following week, in the final game of the season, we won 4-3 at Maine Road but we could only finish 8th in the league.

Four years later, after a short spell managing Bolton, Armfield was in charge of Leeds United in the final of the European Cup.

George Best said this was his favourite photo. It's from a FA Youth Cup tie, second leg, at Maine Road. Bestie has just forced Mike Doyle into putting the ball in his own net. United won the trophy that year beating Swindon in the final.
