Awesome United pics

Anfield, Boxing Day 1986. Kevin Moran goes in hard on Dalglish while Rush, Olsen, and Whiteside look on, United won 1-0 with a goal from Big Norm.

An embarrassment indeed. Third Division side Aston Villa knock United out of the League Cup. McMahon is seen heading Villa's winner in a 2-1 win.

Unsure where this was taken. My guess is the 1977-78 season. Could be at St Andrews. Anyway, Paddy Roche is in goal and that looks like Pancho wearing the number 11. Surely not!

I don't remember seeing one of these back then. Is it a replica or a modern invention? I do remember seeing punks with "Hitler-European Tour" tees but not one for us. Anyone know?

Blimey, no wonder I'd forgotten this match. It's a 5-1 defeat at Birmingham in '78. We had tried to sign Coventry 'keeper Jim Blyth about the same time. He failed his medical. Gary Bailey made his debut v Ipswich the week after this match (against Ipswich - 2-0 - I do remember that game.)

No 11 is Mcilroy.

I remember us trying to sign Jim Blyth. There was talk about us signing Jeff Blockley too. Thanks for the ID on Sammy.

October 1976 and we had three aways on the trot: City (won 3-1), Leeds (won 2-0) and WBA (lost 0-4). I've still no idea how it happened and I was there that day.

1987. The FA Cup 4th round. We'd already beaten City in the 3rd but another City caused an upset by winning 1-0 at Old Trafford. Coventry City, the eventual winners.

December 30th, 1978 and Ron Atkinson brings his West Brom side to Old Trafford for a memorable game. Albion won 5-3 with United's goals coming from Brian Greenhoff, Gordon McQueen, and Sammy McIlroy. Cyrille Regis, one of Albion's "3 Degrees" was on the scoresheet too that day.

Gordon Banks saves a dog during Leicester's home match with United at Filbert Street in November 1965. Didn't have any luck with United's forwards who stuck five past him without reply. The goalscorers were Herd (2), Best, Charlton, and Connelly.

Why is there a giant alphabet in the background of the photo? I'm expecting a giant Carol Vordermann to stroll towards it.

Oh wait I've realised why... still, it's not a sight you'd see now.

Ah. That's a scoreboard. HT scores were manually put up on it. Each letter corresponded to a team identified in the match programme.

Yeah, I realised as I've seen similar when watching cricket in various places, hard to think of a pre-digital world at times.

Never saw one of these. The 'tour' line font looks different from the rest.

I think it's a modern shirt based on an idea that was around in the 70s. Don't think I'd buy one. Most of the stuff I wore back then I made myself though my sister did embroider the names of the players into my red and white scarf. She also sewed the club crest onto my Levi jacket. I'd like to say it still fits me but I'd be lying (it's far too big for me now).

May 29th, 1968. United and Benfica step out at Wembley. I think the colour in this photo may have faded slightly because I remember the brilliance of the blue strip and it seemed a lot brighter than is shown here. The one thing that can't be reproduced is the noise. My ears rang for days after that game. And look at the size of Torres. He was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch.
