Awesome United pics

I was in London when the Ripper was about. There really wasn't any fear down there as it was seen as a regional issue (you know what Londoners are like). They played the tape on Capital Radio but there was no hunt for him there, as far as I know. A band called The Gonads wrote a song called "Ripper's Delight" that I heard but such were the days. I also remember the papers getting upset about Leeds fans chanting "There's only one Yorkshire Ripper" at home games.

My sister started at Leeds University just after the Ripper was caught, one of the victims was found on the road running next to the student residencies I believe. My Dad said afterwards, that if he hadn't been caught, he wouldn't have allowed her to study there.

Love the caption in French, "English football and its energy". Actually, you could translate it a number of ways, energy/vigour/power/spirit or maybe you prefer pizazz?

Started reading your post and for a brief moment I was thinking, bloody hell - how old are you!- Then I realised:o

Arnold Muhren somewhere in the early 80s. I remember thinking he was quite exotic being both Dutch and left footed. Would later go on to secondary fame while putting in that crap cross to Van Basten who volleyed in perhaps the greatest goal ever in the Euro 88 finals against the Ruskies.

Some great, great pictures in here, a severe lack of Robson though my childhood hero.

Robson scores his second goal of the day in a 3-3 draw with Liverpool in 1988.

Robson and Souness, no-one is going to pull out of this tackle.

Do you mean 1988?

Funnily enough, one of my first jobs down there was researching primary source material on the Whitechapel murders. I interviewed a man, he was 96 at the time, who was alive during the "Autumn of Terror". His memory of those events was quite lucid even though he was only 7 or 8 when the murders took place.

A young Best scores against Barnsley at Oakwell in the FA Cup. United reached the semi-final before going out to the eventual winners, West Ham.

I must admit to not really getting Robson, initially. Then I started concentrating on watching only him and realised he was everywhere and I then understood what all the fuss was about. A true United great and a legend who finally got his reward for sticking with us.

That was the filming of the movie 'Cup Fever' in 1965…

Thanks Mr. M. It was a great time to be alive then. United won the league and the World Cup was just a year away. I remember badgering my dad with questions like "will Bobby play" or "will Nobby get picked" and suchlike. Footballers were so much closer, if that's the right word, to the supporters in those days.

United's contribution to England's success in 1966. Here, Bobby Charlton slams an absolute thunderbolt past Mexico's goalie. One of the goals of the tournament.

The semi final against a formidable Portuguese side. Bobby scored England's two goals that put them in the final.

Can't forget Nobby's role. Here he is performing an overhead kick against France in the group game. England won 2-0 with two goals from Liverpool's Roger Hunt.

His duel with the might Eusebio is the stuff of legends and was to be repeated two years later on the same pitch.

People quite rightly talk of Geoff Hurst's hat-trick but without these two, it might well have been a Portugal v. West Germany final.

Before Robson my favourite player, would watch England just to see him play. IMO his goal against Mexico was possibly the finest of his career. His sacrifice against the Kaiser enabled the rest of the squad to damage the Germans and eventually win. Not sure many players could do that for 90+ET with such concentration and purpose.
