Awesome United pics

1979 at Maine Road. Steve Coppell sticks one of a brace he scored that day past Frankenstein in the City goal. Andy Ritchie scored the other in a 3-0 win.

1976 - Doyle and Kidd (City) against Buchan and Macari. Pearson in background.

1974 - City 0, United 0

Ref Clive Thomas sent off Macari and Doyle, but they refused to leave the field. Both teams then went off for a time, and returned later with 10 men each. Macari says Thomas got the police into to eachh dressing room to insist Macari and Doyle didn't come back on.

Two from the '50's.

One is from before the Munich disaster and shows Byrne, Edwards and Don Revie (I think) at Maine Road.

The second is also at Maine Road and from after Munich. I think it's the 1-1 draw in September '58. United players; Ronnie Cope, Bill Foulkes and Wilf McGuiness.

1968 - Best scores past Ken Mulhearn in the first minute but United lost 3-1.

United had won 2-1 at City earlier in the season.

Law, Foulkes, Book, Oakes, Doyle and Neil Young in shot.

Two more from the '50's.

United win 2-0 in 1956/7. Jones and Foulkes for United.

Trautmann saves from Albert Scanlon.

1985 - Duxbury scores for United in a 3-0 win at City. It was United's eighth straight win since the start of the season.

On the floor: Stapleton.
On the wing: Ex City player Peter Barnes
The City players; Sammy McIlroy and Mick McCarthy (I think).

United at Anfield. I'm guessing 1964.

United players: Foulkes, Charlton, Brennan and Dunne, along with Setters, who I'm guessing committed the foul.
Liverpool: St John and Paisley as physio.

Fergie looks the part in this outfit. A real manager's uniform of sheepskin car coat, kipper tie, and Windsor knot. Ron Knee would approve.

This is just weird. Two old biddies appear to be having a natter on the touchline during a Spurs v. United game in the early 70s. Is this shopped or real? I have no idea.

So that is where the handbags-expression came from :)

Incidentally, that's Tommy O'Neil for United and no badge, so it must be 71-72. That means it was a 2-0 defeat, the seventh loss in a row in the league. After being top by 5pts (when only 2pts for win) at Christmas, United finished 8th.

Spurs player: One of the Morgan twins - can't remember which left QPR for Tottenham, Ian or Roger.

Was that Buchan's debut game? I wasn't there but remember watching it on MOTD. Buchan looked really out of place with that short back and sides that he had. Looked more like a missionary than a footballer.

Not many visible scarves either in the crowd.

Yeah, I think it was. Well remembered.

Kidd scores v City ina 3-0 FA Cup win in 69-70 - United's only win in five against City that season.

Buchan against Spurs in 72. Alan Gilzean wins the header. Steve James and Charlton in the background.

1965 - United win the league on goal average (not difference) from Leeds.

Law scores in a 3-1 win against Arsenal to clinch the title.

Best against United.

George Best turns out for Dunstable in a friendly in 1974.

At Craven Cottage. Aston in shot for United. Possibly World Cup winner George Cohen (No. 2) for Fulham. I think it's a 2-2 draw from 1967. If so, it must be Easter as United played them at home the next day! United won 2-1.

Then again, it could be the 4-0 win in '68. I don't know.

Not only didn't United win the Watney Cup in the early '70's, they also didn't win the Anglo Italian Cup.
