Awesome United pics

Three years later and another 3-2 win at Maine Road.
Is it possible to look more cool slotting home a penalty in a derby match?

Keegan didn't love this. Eric's superb goal couple with a Schmeichel masterclass saw off Newcastle's challenge for the title.

The man who saved Fergie, or so the story goes. Mark Robins scores the winning goal at the City Ground in January 1990. Hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since that night.
A twist of fate indeed. Deserves a statue at Old Trafford although I'm not sure Fergie would be too happy.

1990 and a bit of the old ultra-violence against Arsenal. It started with everyone's favourite Gunner, Nigel Winterburn, kicking lumps out of Dennis Irwin. The resulting aggro was worthy of Little Alex and his Droogs and cost United a point and Arsenal two. They still won the league though.

A simple tap-in at Anfield in 1971? Not quite. George Best went on a brilliant diagonal run across the pitch before getting to the byline and hitting a wicked driven cross. Many players wouldn't have had the speed of reaction that Law did but he got on the end of it. Game finished 2-2.

Goalmouth action against Wolves. Younger readers might not know that back in the 60s and 70s, Wolves were a pretty good side that reached the UEFA Cup final in 1972 and beat City at Wembley in the League Cup final in 1974.

1976 and back in Europe. This photo was taken during the second leg of the first round tie with Ajax. United won 2-0 (2-1 on aggregate) but went out to Juventus in the next round.

Derby day 1967-68 season. Bobby scores one of a brace that beat City 2-1 at Maine Road.

I see Joe Corrigan their goalie, Mike Doyle the rampant ABU and their captain Tony Book who looks like he gave up the ghost, but who's the other fella on the left? Couldn't have wished a better picture with Doyle, really disliked the bloke.

Glyn Pardoe, I think. Doyle was an utter twat who was always going on about how he hated United.

The first clip is of United vs City in 1970, when Best broke Pardoe's leg. Charlton, Best, Law and the rest got a serious beating and was at the beginning of our decline under Wilf. Gerald Sinstedt from Granada commentating, the last part is funny from a horrible game.

The next is Malcolm Allinson, City coach, talking about Bestie's tackle of Pardoe the next day and also includes a comment about Doyle. Both look a bit scratchy but worth a look.

Another career-ending injury. Colin Bell's knee was wrecked after a Martin Buchan challenge during a League Cup tie at Maine Road in 1975. Bell was later to say that he did not think that Buchan set out to hurt him but he was upset that our skipper never went to see him in hospital. I remember the game but didn't have a good view of the incident but Bell was clearly in agony as he was being carried off. Many City fans maintain that Buchan deliberately injured Bell that night but he has never spoken about it, as far as I know, and he never seemed the kind of player who would do that.

It's a shame because Bell was an exceptional player.

There were rumours galore after that match. The story I heard was that Bestie was determined to get a bit of payback for Pardoe's tackle on John Aston the year before that broke Aston's leg. I doubt that there's any truth to it though.

He spoke about it a couple of years ago at a dinner I attended. Asked a question about the tackle by a City fan, Buchan insisted that not only had he not set out to injure Bell, he hadn't even made contact with him, he claimed that Bell planted his foot too firmly as he twisted to control the ball, causing the injury that way.

To be fair, irrespective of all the hype and rumour I don't think either side has really gone out to harm the other. It's been a little hot with the likes of Doyle and Paddy Crerand around but most derby games I recall were not that physical or violent. I don't recall that many incidents of revenge or retaliation, perhaps the odd flair up and toys out of the pram. Saying that I hope we given them a tough time on Sunday.

Buchan used to drink in the Little B in Brooklands. A month or two after the game, an article came out in one of the dailies that pretty much alleged that Buchan was culpable for ending Bell's season. One of my mates simply said to him "it's all bollocks isn't it?" and he just said "Aye, it is" and that was that. Tommy Doc said pretty much the same thing. Buchan was never a dirty player and I just won't have it that he maliciously hurt Bell.

I remember one game at Old Trafford (1969, I think) when City came out first just to kick in at the Stretford End. The abuse they got was pretty strong but, fair play, the City players joined in. Summerbee stood there conducting his song "I'll walk a million miles to the end of your nose" and Francis Lee, when told he had VD, looked down his shorts and shook his head. The only one that didn't join in was Doyle who lurked around on the edge of the box looking disgusted. They beat us that day too.

This thread is the gift that keeps on giving. Great work by all of you contributing with pictures. Am especially enjoying seeing all the older ones, from the early eighties and back. I've seen quite a few in books on our history and such, but never so many collected in one single place, and it's a real treat!

The Manchester derby in 1974 was against Oldham. Surprisingly, United were bested 1-0 at Boundary Park but won the return 3-2.

1982 and Valencia are our UEFA Cup opponents. Kevin Moran looks pensive while Ray Wilkins looks like he's grown horns.

Wilkins looks like Frank Sobatca in that pic.
