Awesome United pics

Remember when we didn't win the Watney Cup?

I was at the Liverpool match. There was a lot of trouble that day with fans running from the Stretford End across the pitch to attack the Scousers in the Scoreboard. It was 1-0 at HT after Wyn Davies bundled the ball over the line.MacDougall's goal was pretty good, scoring from an angle from a pass by Tony Young. His goal against Leeds (Docherty's first game in charge) was a tap in after Willie Morgan had cut Leeds apart on their left.

After O'Farrell's last - a 5-0 humiliation at Palace.

United v Ferencvaros in 1965, semi final of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup.

In the wall: Connelly, Brennan, Stiles, Charlton, Law, Foulkes, Crerand and Herd.#
To the side: Best and Tony Dunne
In goal: Pat Dunne.

Remarkably United played both legs of the quarter final, both legs of the semi final and a replay (no away goals rule) in Hungary after the league season had finished. The replay took place in mid June.

Other results in the Fairs Cup that season:

Djuergardens (a) 1-1

Djuergardens (h) 6-1

Borussia Dortmund (a) 6-1

Borussia Dortmund (h) 4-0

Everton (h) 1-1

Everton (a) 2-1

A tie that maybe should have gone to a replay?

United v Milan, May 1969 - European Cup semi final.

Bobby Charlton and Gianni Rivera before the leg in Milan. United lost 2-0.

Denis Law thinks he's scored to make it 2-2 on aggregate at Old Trafford. Goal not given, United win 1-0 but go out. I think the replay would have been played in Belgium.

I have to say I'm not sure it crossed the line.

I wasn't there. I was 8 listening on the radio in our freezing kitchen.

I posted this one a while back as the goal that never was. I was in the Stretford End that night just to the left of the goal. I couldn't swear that the ball crossed the line but Law's reaction was convincing. Spent half the night dodging missiles thrown at the Milan goalie, Cudicini. In his book, Denis states that the ball was definitely over the line and that the Milan full back kicked it back into play.

The man who saved Fergie, or so the story goes. Mark Robins scores the winning goal at the City Ground in January 1990. Hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since that night.

As did Busby post match, who was really angry.

I'm just not sure it did...

Some of the missiles I mentioned. One hit Cudicini on the head and the game was stopped for a while. Here a Milan defender and a ball boy pick up coins from the pitch.

1970 League Cup semi-final second leg. Law takes a swing at Tommy Booth while Frankenstein lies in the goalmouth. The game ended 2-2 (3-4 on aggregate) thanks to an Alex Stepney blunder.

Didn't we get banned from Europe because of this for two years? But no one remembers as we didn't qualify anyway for seven? Had to concentrate on the Watney Cup.

Crowd trouble also led to this...

One more from Milan. United players react to Law's "goal". Cudicini has gathered up the ball by now but Morgan and Law are certain it crossed the line.

As we're on the subject of Denis Law, here's one that did count. He liked scoring against Palace.

Yeah, and some great goals against them.

Let's stay on Law.

And to a photographer.

Against West Brom. Fitzpatrick, Astle and Talbot in shot.

Against Don Howe (Arsenal) in one of those weird coloured in photos.

Scoring against Arsenal. Herd in shot. Ure and McLintock, the central defenders nowhere near.

A goal, no idea against who though.

Albion maybe, or it could be Sheffield Wednesday.

More Law.

Penalty at West Ham.

Against Bobby Moore.

The penalty at West Ham: When United won 6-1 to win the league in 1967?

Maine Road circa 1968. Alan Oakes grapples with Bobby Charlton as George Heslop (?) and John Aston look on.
