Australian Open 2010

First set so far so good but Murray needs to concentrate on his serve, as that was main reason he was broken in the first set due to having a poor service game. Any more of that and Nadal is always likely to punish Murray some more. Otherwise bar his serve Murray is the more aggresive player so far but he needs to maintain it with this being a good chance to beat Nadal again.

The trainer is massaging the knee at moment to try to sort the issue out but Nadal will give it a go even with the pain but Murray now has the chance to run him around a lot to put more pressure on his knee.

Murray looks to have it here.... Playing some excellent tennis. Serving is immense

Nadal retires injured but even though this has happened Murray was brilliant today and would have probably won based on the way he was playing. It could be bad for Nadal though if it is the same injury that kept him out for a time last year he could be out for a while.

So basically... whenever Nadal looks like he might lose he either retires blaming his knee, or takes the loss... and blames his knee.

Bit unfair as the way Nadal played first 2 sets there was no sign on the injury affecting him and it looks to have just gone at the beginning of the 3rd set. If the rumours the commentators were talking about during the match are true he has been trying to protect the knee during the tournament and trying to ease it along back to full strength. If it is the same injury as before Nadal could be out for a while.

As it is no one can doubt Murray was the better player on the night and would have ended up winning if the match had continued.

Question for any people who bet on tennis. When Rafa called for the trainer and looked finished i tried to put a bet on murray to take the set 6-0. Basically i fecked up as the odds changed when i placed it but i didnt notice and i ran off to watch the rest of the match. When i came back obviously the bet wasnt placed but IF the bet was placed, for the final set to be under 6.5 games would i have won due to the fact the set was under 6.5 of got my money back since it finished with a retirement?

Nah - Set would have needed to have been played in full. It wasn't. You would have been refunded...

Anyone looking to bet on Murray to win he Australian open would be better off betting on Murray for the BBC sports personality of the year (hoping Enland does not win WC may I add - but you could hedge it there)

Also anyone thinking of backing England to win the WC - would be better backing Capello to be to knighted in the Queen's honors list at 50's

Murray played very well, fully deserved to win, would have been interesting though if Nadal could have punished his 2nd serve a bit more, as he had a lot of opportunities, but let Murray off by dumping it in the net.

I'm not confident of Murray v Cilic, it's that sort of game, where the opponent has the game to hit him off court if he's on his game

Cheers Baz i thought that would be the case. Still it was 13/1 when i tried to bet it, why coudlnt rafa just let himself get pumped!

The question over Cilic is how well will he have recovered from yet another long 5 set match in the round before. As so far this tournament Cilic has had 1 4 set match and 3 5 set matches so will he be able to cope if Murray turns up like he did today and takes the game to him.

How can he recover?

Also if Murray plays like he has done how does he not win this one? Cilic is a dangerous player but Murray in this form should take him. Especially considering the freshness.

I am backing Murray here but was raising the point for anyone thinking Cilic might be too dangerous that Cilic has had the harder tournament so far compared to Murray who has yet to drop a set. So Murray will be the fresher player and more able to turn it on in the semi when needed.

Excellent display by Murray, don't think the match was quite as good as their epic last time in the Aussie open where a young Murray demonstrated alot of flair against a peak fitness Nadal.. but regardless for the first two sets Nadal looked close to the Nadal of old and Murray simply outplayed him.

I don't know why Murray doesn't play offensive tennis more often.

If Murray can continue to attack he'll have a good chance v Cilic, I just worry he may take him lightly and be passive.

Federer is a different proposition altogether, Murray'll be well fired up for that but Fed seems to be far more relaxed with his game now that Nadal is struggling.

Cilic beat Murray in the last match they played so Murray will be out to make sure he wins this one and to get to his 2nd Grand Slam final.

True, Murrays forehand will be crucial.. as we saw against Nadal he seems to be regaining confidence in it and whilst it's nowhere near his backhand, as long as he can hit winners off it and return with depth then he'll always be in the points.

The wrist injuries have definitely affected the development of his forehand, hopefully injury free this shot can become a major weapon.

Hewitt lost and it was Australia Day today (well, yesterday now).

Happy days.

find me an australian who does, and i'll show you someone that needs to be (re)moved to adelaide!

Only seen some highlights, but Murray looked fantastic today. Did all the right things, and never allowed Nadal to settle.

I can't see Cilic giving him any sort of game with the form Murray's in and the extra time Cilic has spent on court.

Watched both matches as today was a waste, Murray looked unreal and Cilic looked very composed in that 5th set after nearly falling out of it... Getting those 2 points in the end of the 4th went a long way for his confidence.

part of me really wants murray to win... he has worked so hard to become a batter player and is playing so well...

but quite frankly im not sure if i can take the media wankfest at wimbledon if he does win

he gets that anyway but i feel his best chance is outside wimbledon anyway as the wankfest does him little good and as focused and level headed as he is it's gotta take a tole.

This is a great opportunity for him. He has the experience of the US open final so if he gets past Cilic he'll take some comfort in that. Plus his game is really looking excellent. IF he plays like this who will stop him? A top performance from Federer is the only way i see it.

if murray and federer both hit form in the final its going to be a great game to watch

Nadal.
Some said he will not last and dominate like Roger because of his style of play. I hope they were not right. Now Murray should get to the finals easily now.

Two Chinese women in the last 4. They got to the point where they dominated in other racket sports like table tennis and badminton, and I wonder if they can do the same in tennis. I wouldn't bet against it in the future, though Zheng and Li are not the ones to do it.
