Australia Tour of South Africa 2018/Ball tampering

I've started feeling a bit of sympathy for Steve Smith in this whole case now. Definite over reaction.
Stripping him of captaincy and banning him for 5-6 test matches is fine. Some are advocating for a year ban which would be excessive.

Also people comparing this to match/spot fixing are stupid.

I agree there's been an overreaction. I have no sympathy though because they have history.

Looks like Warner is done for a while..

DISGRACED Australian vice-captain David Warner has further outraged devastated teammates by swilling champagne in the bar of the team hotel in Cape Town with non-cricket mates, foxsports.com.au understands.
Several of Warner’s already furious teammates have asked cricket bosses to have the disgraced batsman ‘removed’ from the team hotel, warning there could be an ‘incident’ between Warner and angry players if he remains.

Edit: It says he even took himself out of players whatsapp group!!

Rumors seems to be gaining traction that Warner and Bancroft cooked the idea up and Smith knew nothing beforehand and chose to take the fall to partially protect Bancroft. No idea if true or just wishful thinking.

If this is true then it will come out after CA investigation. Also then Warner would definitely get an year ban or so.

Matt Renshaw, fresh from a half century in the Sheffield Shield final for the mighty Queensland Bulls, is on his way to South Africa to play in the 4th test. His debut was against South Africa the test after a ball tampering controversy involving the South African captain. His way back into the Australian team comes against South Africa the test following a ball tampering controversy.

is this cheating thing new to cricket then?

lot of hypocrites going round

Ah, all you can do is chuckle at times. Dave Warner's OLED TV ad re done in light of recent events.

Is this bloke reliable or not? If he's on the mark, I'm happy enough with those punishments.

Seriously? Surely it is extreme? Entire backroom sacked? Where they even involved?

I get CA trying to put the foot down and show that they will never tolerate anything similar but they are being extremely harsh.

Not convinced by that argument, I mean Smith is only 3 years older than Bancroft and they don't seem to be that close where Smith will tarnish his entire career for someone else. I suspect Smith's pals in the media are trying their best to soften the blow when the axe falls and everyone seems prepared to stitch up David Warner.

1 year ban would be ridiculous. People openly cheat on football all the time. This is not match fixing.

That sounds over the top to an insane degree. I think anyway these punishments should wait until the picture is clearer regarding who exactly was in the know and to what extent. I'm sure not every member of the backroom staff was involved so that would be ridiculous. One year ban is also too much based on the facts out there so far.

We will know in fifteen mins. Be a shame if there's a one year ban .

It almost feels like they are letting the public outrage make the decision for them. Probably thinking if they take an extreme stance, they will be seen in a new light around the cricketing world or something. Can't think of a reason why they would hand out such ridiculous punishments.

Also, someone should tell them they will always be arrogant pricks to the rest of the cricketing community even if the banned the whole team for a year.

Think it's more about trying to set an example and change the culture of the team, rather than them just reacting to this one specific incident.

Amount of overreaction for this incident is ridiculous. Yes Smith and co. were at fault but to act as if this is the first time such things have happened is a joke. I am not a huge fan of aussies as a person (cricketers)myself but giving them lengthy bans or stripping them from captaincy is beyond joke. People make stupid mistakes, we all are human beings. I hate when people like Strauss, Vaughan bring their so called nice person attitude and tell how the game should be played. They are sore losers who have constantly underperformed at the grandest stage. Can't take them seriously.

Having said that hopefully players in future think several times before doing such brain fade thing.

Well I'm not sure Strauss and Vaughan are to blame here given its Cricket Australia and the Australian public that are demanding action. There's also not much support for Smith and Warner for a reason.

Not blaming Vaughan or Strauss but the amount of tweet Vaughan and other ex English crickters have written , calling aussies cheat and even some asking them to void the ashes result shows how sore losers they are. I understand the frustration of Australian public, I would have been equally frustrated had kohli done such a thing, but to strip the player from captaincy or give him a year ban is ridiculous

I'm not Vaughan's biggest fan by a long shot but he did say even if the Aussies were ball tampering it had no bearing on the result. No one credible can say so. But you can still a spade a spade even if your team has lost, Broad's trolling for example was hilarious and given the hypocrisy shown by Lehmann and Warner, well deserved.

The position of Australian captain is slightly different to position of Indian captain. The Aussies really hype up that role and Baggy green significantly which made Smith's position untenable when he admitted to cheating.

It seems over the top for 1 incident...
But if they have been doing it for a while, they need to get rid of everyone and start again.

They probably know more than we do.

No action on Lehmann so that tweet is bogus.

Sutherland with some corporate speak here. Might be a good thing - to take the steam off the witch hunt.

All of these punishments are way too harsh. The only reason why this has gained so much traction is because the evidence was so clear.

It seems ridiculous to me that the likes of Starc, Hazlewood didn't know anything about the tempering.

Lehmann also being let off.

Smith and Warner seem to be scapegoats to me. Ridiculous.

Wasn't Lehmann caught on camera giving instructions to cover up the tampering tape?

Was this "Leadership Group" created after they were caught on tv or was there something like that before that?

I doubt it. I reckon all Sutherland's managed to do is turn this into an even bigger crisis of governance.

Posted that mid-way. Having watched and thought about the whole thing, I am in agreement.

Reckon Sutherland needs some sacking now.

I think Smith, Warner and co are going to take the hit for a wider cultural problem in the Australian cricket team

Unfortunately, they have been the pioneers of a unique kind of abuse (sledging doesn't do the word justice) for at least two decades - and now these two puppy-men will be the fall guys for a stung nation and a wider global public.

Some of this abuse has also, it has to be said, particularly for sides like West Indies, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka had ugly racial connotations and, frankly, any sentence handed down will never be enough for those on the receiving end of those insults (even if most of the current players would never stoop to such levels).

Lehmann being let off us ridiculous. By his statements and general demeanor, I am almost certain that all this sledging stuff etc comes from him. If you want to change the team culture then why not remove the main instigator?

Pleased for Maxwell though.

Now that I think of it (and no bias included), I think a long term ban is uncalled for. I remember when Afridi tried to eat the ball and scuff the pitch and the outrage never felt as much.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Warner is the ring leader in all of this.

I don't think the reaction is about how much they tampered the ball, rather that the whole team sat down and decided to tamper it.. Afridi's act was more spontaneous..

Anyway 1yr ban is over the top especially with no punishment to the coach who actually told the player that he was caught and to hide the tape..
