Aurelien Tchouameni / Signs for Madrid

So they haven't agreed anything with Monaco, and they haven't agreed anything with Tchouameni. How exactly are they close to signing him then?
Would expect more reports of Madrid negotiating with his agents if this were true.

A bit on Tchouameni:

People might think he's like Pogba stylistically but that's not the case. He's a lot closer to a Kante(although still different). He's a bit similar to Pogba in his natural physical build, that's about it.

His statistics are extremely impressive defensively. He's in the top 1 or 2 percentile in a lot of such stats for midfielders in Europe.

Some of the stats he's very high in are "aggressive pressing", balls won after he initiated the press, balls won in opponent's final 30m, etc.

His offensive/passing statistics are good, especially for a Defensive Mid. but as of now, by no means, is he a box to box player. Even though he's good on the ball he's not a dribbler like a Camavinga is.

He's gifted though but his technical skills peak at his passing range: a very neat and efficient passer. He'll improve even further in terms of key passes with experience, but he often tries to break atleast one defensive line with his passing; he's pretty progressive passer and not just a player who plays it safe with short, sideways passing like Harry Winks is.

It's very impressive how fast he fitted into the France National team already. Another thing about him is that he's very clever. Much sharper and mature than your average Footballer. Read this recently:

Some of the most interesting French Football analysts released a book like 6 months back on "How to win a Football game?", where they talked to various professionals about the different methods they use to make sure they're better than their opponents. It's not based on broad technical points but rather the little details people tend to not talk about. The details which give you an edge over opponents of a similar level and how to generally keep improving as much as possible. The book has interviews with nutritionists, video analysts, physical and mental coaches and so on, all working for top division teams. One of the authors said that they interviewed Tchouameni for the book because he has his own data and video analysts who help him before every game to counter the strengths and games of the players he's gonna be up against. Club Analysts from Monaco normally paint a broad picture of how to outplay the opponents, how to work as a team, the systems, which passing circuits to prefer, etc. But Tchouameni's personal analysts will focus on every player of the other team and how to counter them and take advantage of their weaknesses like "This Right Back always tends to use a short dribble towards his left when he's pressed in his own half" (that type of thing but way more detailed and adapted to Tchouameni's game). Apparently, he has his own notebook and data records collected on all players, basically like the coaches do; except this is a 22 year old youngster.

This is how he's such a beast at winning the ball back and passing the ball and is constantly improving his game. Ofcourse, physically and technically he's top notch but it's his Footballing brain which sets him apart. He knows exactly when and how to press which player. He reads the game very well for his age.

Apologies for the very long post. :D

Would take him or Rice but given the prices quoted for Rice give me this guy any day of the week instead please

obviously a smart guy/manager if two of the immediate players linked with United are Tchouameni and Nkunku. he's got a better eye for talent than the last couple of guys we've had in charge of the club

Tchouameni fills the Kante hole better than anyone I can think of, not named Rice. I don't think we necessarily need to specifically replace Jorginho. Kovacic will take on a greater role if Jorginho leaves. Gallagher returns. Kante's powers are waning and he's pretty injury prone now and we have to start gradually phasing him out soon.
We have lots of midfielders who are ball carriers who get it and surge forward. Kova, Kante, RLC, Gallagher next season. Jorginho is the only one who sits deep. We need another with that profile. Moving Kova back into the Jorginho role takes away his greatest asset which is carrying the ball forward.

I don't think we necessarily absolutely have to have a DLP in the Jorginho mould though. Watch how we play when it's Kovacic and Kante out there. Kovacic doesn't just sit back and try to mimic Jorginho. He's a good enough pass and move player to fulfil some of that role whilst bringing all of his own qualities to the table too. Finding a player who can do what Kante does is far more important, to me at least, than finding a player who can do what Jorginho does. Tchouameni, Rice or someone in that mould is a must for me this summer.

If he has interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea why would he wait even the year?

Sometimes they can be sold on the idea. Maybe he’d rather move to Utd over Chelsea and Madrid where he’d be rotating with Kovacic and Kante, Modric and Kroos.

How did City build up to compete if no players want to move to teams lower down the league?

Why did Ronaldinho choose Barca over Utd in 2003 when we had CL football and Barca were in the UEFA cup?

Rice for me is not a passer, but he kind of stays in the position of one to sit and block the opposition attackers.

Tchouameni in my eyes is more like Kante. He is everywhere and constantly running at people rather than staying solid in a position of a deep CDM playmaker.

Jorginho is best replaced by Rice imo (not for passing but more the position/ area he plays in; I can see a pass and move player like Kovacic being great in front/next to Rice.

Tchouameni seems more like the replacement for Kante, someone who is making tackles on the opposition goal line just as much as his own.

We need to get out of this habit of paying top dollar for the next shiniest French lad. We need at least 5 new players in the summer, and the only way that we are going to build and breathe life into this team is by bringing in decent proven players with the right attitude. Like Ruben Neves, Kalvin Phillips, Rudiger. We need a new spine, not another prospect that blows the budget.

When have we done that? Chelsea bought Bakayoko, Tottenham bought Ndombele and Liverpool got Fabinho from Monaco.

When have we bought a highly touted french lad outside of Martial?

Tchouameni is a starter for the french national side currently as well.

United is a step up compared to Monaco but the bold part is a key point that people should keep in mind when they later look at players' wage and berate them. That's the only sure thing that we can offer.

Real and Barca have regularly paid bigger wages than us. Some players might prefer PL. He may see himself as being a key player for us rather than a smaller cog at Madrid etc.

But United had other things to offer, the best manager and guaranteed silverware. In 2022 United has money and nothing else which can be compelling but we should be surprised by the wages that our recruits will have in the near future, hopefully it won't last and the next manager will bring something else.

If I remember correctly his agents came out a few weeks ago and said there's nothing agreed with any club. I believe this signing should have been the summer window when he was available for 50 million, he'd be a fantastic signing.

I admire Rice's qualities but West Ham's bargaining position would be unmatched. Rice has a lengthy contract and doesn't seem the character to make up a fuss to leave.

Doesn't seem like a likely signing give his desire to move to Madrid.

Dunno. Most of the gossip seems to suggest this. Like it did with Camavinga.

Camavinga was linked to Madrid by Barnett his agent, it wasn't just gossip from Madrid press. In the case of Tchouaméni I haven't seen anything from reliable sources but I didn't follow it so maybe it happened.

Okay. To be honest I don't really understand reliability tiers of journalists etc except for a few of the well known ones for United base stuff so I see noise and noise.

We will probably try. But so will Chelsea (if they are in a position where they can), Man City and maybe even Liverpool.

Hope we push for his good friend Kounde too. They almost grew up together at Bourdeaux and share the same agent today. I would imagine EtH would really like Kounde.

Watch a fair amount of French football this season though not much of Monaco. Tchouameni certainly looks a talent and right for the defensive midfield role, dont know what it is but he doesnt seem like a United player to me for some reason. If we were forgetting fees and had the choice, I would definately pick Rice ahead of him for us, not saying that as "he is the better player" though personally think he actually is and is even now under rated by many on here.

As for Nkunku, definately a good player, but where would you see him playing for us as not seen a lot of German football this season, but last year and the European games i have seen....he always seems to be on the left or Fernandes type role, just dont see where he fits in with what we need?

Think there may hav ebeen a fair few youth products from France but yes, I would certainly like to see us looking at the French league this summer....Gusto, Vanderson, Caqueret, Lukeba, Kamara, Giouri, Ugochukwu, Doku, Sulemana, Ekitike are all players worth looking at especially the prices I think some would go for being reasonable

That's an excellent post, no need for the apology at all.

Not a chance we are not operating in this level of the market this season. He could go to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or City.

If I had to guess I think he’d go to Liverpool.
City will go for Rice I recon.

I know we're in the mud but christ we're still a more attractive club to players than Arsenal.

I would be very surprised if Tchouameni would join us

Yeah we need to hope the likes of him, Bellingham and Nunez could be sold the project by Erik, well that it's IF he is interested in signing any of these players of course

I’d be shocked if he came here. He has a free run at a number of clubs. If we get champions league by a miracle we have a better chance

United should be going all out for him. I wouldn't care if we splashed money on the Worlds best young talent. He fits the bill and is already starting for France so hardly a risk at all.
