Well, if what I have read is to be believed, that is really underrating Mazzola senior in the attacking sense. This is a man who scored 0.6 goals every game. That is amazing for a Number 10. That is without counting the goals he created.

That is what I am talking about. I don't need a goalscoring midfielder, I have that well covered in the front two. So that was not a priority for me.

But, is he a number 10? From what I have read he isn't similar to someone like Di Stefano, if I were to think of a setup to utilise him the best it would probably be in a similar role that Matthaus played at Inter, as the most advanced CM. But again, I cannot be confident of where to utilise him best in most modern formations let alone the one I am playing which calls for pretty specific talents and not necessarily those who would provide a great 2-way game. If I had a confirmed source of him being an out and out creative force I would have been a lot more confident, but based on what I have read, I don't think he fits that profile. Which aligns well with the tactical setups he played in which was mainly end to end and well suited to those who could play in all phases. That wasn't my requirement.

Nah, he was in no way a player like that which is what I tried to emphasize earlier. Players like him get misunderstood as box to box players capable of winning the ball back as good as they could help create and score.
To emphasize what I would say earlier, work rate is of two types.

1. Not in possession
2. In possession

Mathaaus was the first kind.
Di Stefano and Mazzola were the second kind.

They would roam around moving from one position to other giving an extra option to players around them to pass to.
That way, they got to control the game almost single handedly.

Why they were GOAT's of their era was because, after getting the ball, from any position of the pitch, they were as good at creating and scoring, as they were of controlling.
That makes them special and unique. I would rate that ability at par with Beckenbauer all round game if not in the same fashion.

Rivera is still available for 50 mn cash or a player exchange where I get a 20 mn player (I dont care how shit he is, anyone would do) + 30 mn in cash.

Something I would be a bit wary of, such romantic anecdotes are available for all the greats of that era, be it Moreno, Sarosi, Mazzola and Di Stefano. I have never considered that translating fully to modern tactics and formations. To avail that entire skillset you will need to provide them them the same formations and environments. And again from what I have read, he isn't another Di Stefano, most of his credit goes to his midfield game and the ability to drive forward with power. I haven't seen that kind of emphasis on his creative side, controlling the tempo, vision and tactical awareness that a proper number 10 displays.

That is not how the game is played now, though. I don't have a 5-a-side going on either end of the pitch. I don't want to have someone who after getting the ball would straight away start driving towards goal covering the entire length of the pitch. That is literally not my requirement, I need someone who is first and foremost an elite creator in terms of his passing and vision, who can slow down the game - which I doubt was ever taught to these old school players - and wait for players to make runs before releasing a pin point pass. Mazzola's usual profile doesn't match exactly to that, not to say he wouldn't be able to deliver that but I don't want to pick him and then not play to his strengths.

Aye, its a tough call for me. Been watching lots of him recently and the more I watch, the more I love his play. So was not exactly per plan to sell him.
Of course, Valentino Mazzola is the one who has hardly had any traction around here (although his son is very highly rated from what I have seeb here) and I fortunately have the setup for him to offer lots to.

Given the current mechanics I'm not really sure if you even upgrade a 30m player with 50m player without shifting around half your team and at the end even end up with a weaker team that you got before...

From what I see no one would save money bar the occasional 10/20m which again would make it a bit boring in terms of RR.
