Ashes I - 2013 - In England

Some of the worst batting today I can remember for a long time. Tough to judge whose top order is worse. Utter dross.

Batting again was so obviously the right decision.

Graeme Swann was getting turn and bounce on day 2, the fourth innings is going to be the only innings where batting will actually be hard.
Swann will bowl them out in no time. They'll give themselves two days to bowl Aus out which will be more than enough.
Tomorrow is only the 3rd day. It'll be no problem for England to bat the entire day if necessary. Aus are not going to last 2 full days batting - if they did, they'd deserve the draw.
For once I agree with not enforcing the follow on. As Tom Fordyce says:

"No-one would want to bat last on this turning track; it's blisteringly hot, in the second of back-to-back Tests, so his bowlers need a rest; and finally and most importantly, Australia's best chance of somehow pulling off a win from this dire position was if they followed on."

Basically, Swan just got a fiver-fer on day 2. He must be dreaming of what he's going to be able to do on Sunday. All we need to do is score 100 and the job's done.

The only problem is, we wil no doubt wait until we have about 300 on the board to declare. If we don't have an early collapse, by tomorrow lunchtim England fans will be desperately hoping for wickets to fall!

30-3, England 263 ahead .... still sure it was right, not to enforce follow on?

This series? Both sides have been a shambles. Bell has saved us from similar low scores.

Your comment made it seem very general rather than series wise and even then I'd still stick with England's Top 5.

Regardless of the result England should have enforced the follow on. Negative from Cook and co

Lets see ... 400 target on day 3.5 in very gettable.

At some point this Aus side will score 400+ runs in an innings, they are no Zimbabwe!

If they get 400 chasing in the 4th innings then fair enough, but what are the chances of that? Even in-form it's unlikely, what's the record like 435?

Incredible so many wickets have fallen considering how flat the pitch was yesterday. Looking forward to the highlights and seeing how poor the batting was.

Lets see ... 400 target on day 2.5 (+-) is very get-able.

So you expect this Aus side to break the world record for a chase on a pitch thats going to fall to bits.

English fans on this thread overrate Australia. All of them barring Clarke (and he looks out of form) are incompetent. I'll be surprised if they score above 300 in this series at this rate

Seriously? That pitch is going to be heaven for Swann with another days wear & tear, it's already taking spin.

Are you fecking kidding me mate?

Oh and England should've enforced the follow on. Swann was in his rhythm, they should've gone for the kill.

I agree. Morning session on day 3 gonna be very interesting

Aus back to their usual caper. Went to sleep just after Hughes got out. Was expecting maybe 7fer but not bowled out.. Really shocking stuff. To be honest, none of these guys really should be earning any money with so little ticker that they are showing.

Aussies should have never let Hussey retire. The logic behind dropping Katich looks daft now as well.

England have alot of scope for improvement yet, so this series could become very embarrassing for the Aussie's.

Lets hope so :)

I still can't get over the fact they agreed to move the next Ashes a year forward making this back to back within 6 months.

This is going to be such a disaster for Test Cricket.

How do you work that out? that last test was excellent for test cricket.

The last test was Australia playing as well as they could and England playing as badly as they could, and England still won.

Even this test England have been able to get into a ridiculously commanding position with the top order not contributing.

Not been impressed with Bresnan and Root this morning.

'Well Cook and Trott got out inside edge onto the stumps so lets chase wide ones and be really loose'

All they need to do is tighten up and there's runs, runs, runs to be had here even for a nightwatchman.

The last time was a one off, that record 10th innings partnership (which also had a number 11 set new records for highest score and highest score on debut) papered over the cracks. What we are seeing this test is far closer to what we'll see throughout the next 8 matches and not that much time between them.

If this Ashes event was meant to boost Test Cricket up then Test Cricket is in all sorts of trouble.

This is shit... nothing happening. They have 350+ lead now, so why not go after the bowling?

Milestones. Root wants a century and Bresnan wants a 50 at the very least. Understandable as both have questions over their place.
