Ashes I - 2013 - In England

Last time I looked at a English batsman and thought this kid is going to be special it was Alastair Cook, and now I get a similar feeling with Joe Root. He just looks such a talent and I'm sure we will declare when/if he gets his double century.

They'll probably give Root a chance to get to his 200 tomorrow. Which IMO will be a mistake.

Fantastic knock from Root, should declare over night now. Aussies aren't chasing this down and waiting for Root to get his double hundred could take another couple of hours, taking time out of the game.

They could give him 30 mins to try and hit the 200 and a 600 run lead and still have the best part of two days to bowl them out, no?

It's what I think will happen, Root took quite a while to get his first hundred but has really increased his rate since so I think he will go out with the intention of getting 22 runs quickly and not looking to take another couple of hours out of the game.

A couple of hours for him to get to his 200? He only needs 22 runs! He almost got that many off the last Smith over...

I'd still prefer us to declare mind, with the Aussie bowling completely demoralised I wouldn't like to let Agar get a shred of confidence by gifting him a couple of easy wickets. It'll be interesting to see what they do after this match, he's still their top scorer and they probably need him to give depth to their batting line up, but 2 wickets from 2 games at an average of 120 at the moment, when Smith and Swann have picked up wickets on this pitch isn't good enough for their apparent first choice spinner.

Half hour to an hour would be ok, but the longer we go on the more chance Aus have of saving the game. Of course it's extremely unlikely even if we declare at lunch, but may as well make victory as certain as possible.

They will look silly if the Aussies see next 2 days out.

Not going to happen , but I didn't see the point in not declaring and having a bowl for at least half an hour.

Pieterson out of the rest of the test with a calf strain... not that it really matters

Where have you seen that? Not that he's been particularly good for a long while now anyway. Usually gets one big score a series to keep his average respectable.

I'd like to see Gary Ballance given a chance if he is out, they touched on it on commentary but James Taylor's been treated quite unfairly as well since breaking into a couple of test sides against South Africa last year.

Isnt there 2 weeks between tests this time? Thats plenty of time to recover from a strain, they're probably doing this as a precaution because they know the game is won, and it gives him a little extra time to recover. I expect he'll play in the third test. If not him though, I guess Morgan would be next in line..?

I know the pitch is flat n all but Australia still took only two wickets throughout the day and one of those was of Tim Bresnan. Awful stuff.

Well no, because if the Aussies see the next two days out they may well win. If we'd declared an hour before close and the Aussies saw the final two days out they'd definitely win.

At the end of the day, if the pitch turns out to be so flat that we only get 5 or 6 wickets, but we get away with the draw, then not declaring yet was a masterstroke that keeps us ahead in the series.

And it's not even like we were scoring slowly at the end.

If the Aussies see out the next two days, then quite frankly they deserve a draw at the very least.

I thought it was a poor call, when Bell was out I thought 'that's it'. At about 5pm the forecast for Monday was showers til 4pm, that's now revised to look OK but if it had got worse that would give the Aussies just a day to bat out.

EDIT: just checked again, now showers from noon til 6pm.

Why?

England can bat till lunch, and have a day and a half to bowl out Australia. It's more than long enough.

Set a ridiculous target of something like 650 or 700.

England need to send the message 'we are the better side and we are going to make this tour hell', no reason not to destroy them.

If Australia bat out a day and a half and save the test fair enough, they won't though.

The best thing to do is what the opposition don't want.
I am sure Watson and Rodgers were quite pleased they weren't asked to bat for 45 minutes or so.
In saying that England are in complete control and weather aside this game is finished.
Also the Australians would have to break all sorts of records to turn this around, a lead of 500 was more than enough.

Watson and Rodgers both would rather be batting than fielding watching England score runs by the bucketload. Watson looks like a man who has to watch his mum be raped every time he's asked to do anything in the field.

They had more than enough runs at 5.30, if they declared then the only thing that would save Australia would be the weather.

I disagee, the longer England bat the more chance they have to save it.

Both of them would rather be batting because they would at least feel like the day is in their hands.

I played cricket today and got destroyed all out for 200 and something chasing 350 to win. It fecking sucks bowling at settled batsmen you can't get out knowing the game is already gone.

Every second Australia spend out in the field is hell, England are making sure they not only win this test but grind Australia into the dust. It's ruthless and I like it. More than enough time to bowl them out.

So, if Pietersen is out of the Third Test, who comes in? Morgan? Bopara is injured. Taylor?

Bopara is still batting for Essex last I heard. Not bowling though. Morgan is legit injured I believe (although a broken finger should be better by now), and I don't think he's played anything long form for years.

Taylor or Bopara with Stokes a very left of field possibility I reckon.

If the weather holds and this is England.

uuuuuuuuuurfffffffffffffff....... What a shit place to be at the end of the day.
If England had declared it would smell even worse as it is if you can bat all day tomorrow the rain might save you on Monday.

Its still been entertaining and therefor good for test cricket though

It's entertaining if you're a bitter English fan who's still butt hurt from the 90's or someone who generally enjoys watching one sided, mostly shit Test Cricket. It's only going to get worst too. In no way in hell is this good for Test Cricket.

I cant understand that either, will just devalue it.
The Ashes should be played for every 2 years.

Oh it gets better. Australia are touring England again as soon as 2015 for yet another Ashes series.

Not looking too good is it? Cricket is really waning with the Aussie sporting public, these next 8 matches could be a death knell for the sport in Australia.

Irrespective of the weather, England should declare before play starts today and give themselves as much time as possible to bowl the Aussies out, even if it means Root missing out on his 200. What's the point of an extra 30-40 runs, aside from individual glory?

Although, the way Australia have batted in this match, England will probably only need 2 sessions to get the wickets.

5th bowler instead?
