Arsenal - 2024/25

Bigger bottlers than spurs?

It's not a question of bottle, it's a question of personnel. Think how teams perform when they lose their 4 first choice players from 1 position, Spurs this season, Utd last season, Liverpool the year they lost Van Dijk and other defenders. You just don't play at the same level. Would be interesting to see if Would be winning as many games without Salah, Jota, Nunez and Diaz, and if not would they be the ones showing no bottle?

Still feels like negligence to be in that position despite how unlucky they've been with the injuries. If they signed a striker they probably still wouldn't have won the title due to how efficient Liverpool are looking this season but they'd have made a good go of it.

Still think they'll finish 2nd but I wouldn't put it past them to drop more stinkers.

Indeed. Like we spoke about last week, it's perfectly fine to question the club for not getting the players, every Arsenal fan is doing so as well right now, especially because we knew 2 were already injured in the window, and the manager was reoeusayinhnhe needs people in.

He seems a bit stubborn. Maybe a Pep trait. Pep wanted to show the World with how smart he is by playing a Champions League final without a DM, and he benched Rodri v Chelsea. He lost the game because of it.

Arteta seems that he has to win the League by doing things his own way, and not buying a recognised striker. It also keeps biting him in the ass.

The club tried to get guys like Vlahovic in the past. We tried for Sesko last summer, we'll likely go back this summer. We are repeatedly told Isak is his dream striker signing. So I'm not sure not signing a striker is a result of an Arteta vanity project.

Weekly flurry of uninformed "takes" that have been debunked many times. Only 11 more to go, yay...

That's the CAF for you.

You cannot keep improving season after season.
Yeah, football is really tough to be so linear and “trust the process” in that way. When the opportunity is right you have to strike then and there, which Arsenal just haven’t done.

Currently closer to 10th than they are to us.

In all seriousness, they controlled around 95% of their game against Forest. Again Arteta has no idea what to do to get them scoring and breaking teams down with what he has, but they played well.

I wonder if it’s worth trying Odegaard as a false 9, or Trossard who I’m sure played a game or two there for Brighton. I seem to remember him scoring a hat trick and brace against us in that kind of position.

Tried Trossard there against Leicester and it was terrible, took Merino coming on to change the game. However, that's partly because Sterling is then forced to play.

I think when we get Martinelli back we might see him try him or Trossard there again. Nwaneri has played false 9 before for the youth teams, I reckon if Saka was fit for the right hand side Nwaneri would have been tried there as well.

Listen, we lack top level firepower when everyone is fit. Take out 4 of them and your going to be really struggling, that's why I wrote the league off a couple of weeks ago and it will now be a procession for you guys now. PSV will be a massive struggle now as well, I don't have us as favourites to go through that tie either now.

Seems we have a preferred candidate. Cue the Simeone / Arteta jibes!

He has some pretty big blunders for Atletico: Felix, Lemar, Diego Costa, the living money laundering scheme that is Morata.
His best signings are probably DePaul, Correa and Alvarez (big money though). I would prefer the Sociedad old head that did great work on a budget.

This made me literally laugh out loud.

The thing is... I still wanted us to sign him on loan in Jan.

Eh. It's not like they had a choice there. Mendes wanted him moved for massive money and Mendes controlled Atletico(and Benfica) back then, so they went with it

How does an agent control a team in which he has put no money into and doesn't own shares of? I know what you mean but these clubs are stupid for allowing agents to control their transfers to that level.

Backroom deals, facilitating transfers, fake accounting(look into how much money actually changed hands in the Joao Felix transfer, and how, and where it went)

Mendes moved players to Atletico at favourable conditions and helped them massively in building the team that won the league, made CL final, and stayed competitive for years. That's without going into the financial deals behind the scenes. And Joao Felix *was* a massively rated talent, of course, it's not like he forced them to take on a dud

Last night's result was great. They'll convince themselves they don't need a striker, again they won't buy a striker in the summer and when they underperform next season, everyone will say they should have brought a striker.
We’re clearly buying a striker in the Summer. We just bid £40m for 29 year old in January. Arsenal fans are concerned about whether we’ll make a move in the coming transfer window. We’re livid that we wrote of this season because our first choice (Sesko) wasn’t available.

It’s all well and good saying that we don’t want to sign someone for the sake of it. But one or two additions to our frontline this season, even if they were average, would have prevented us overplaying our first choices. And then maybe we would have Saka, Martinelli, Jesus and Havertz all out long term (with the latter two out for the season).

Nwaneri looks class, I know PSV were poor last night but he was very impressive for a 17 year-old playing in that type of game/occasion, and has shown great glimpses in the PL as well.

I wonder what the plan will be when Saka returns as IMO Arsenal's best XI at the moment should include him in it. I'm wondering if he might possibly be able to operate as a false 9? Looks potentially a better alternative to try him in that sort of role than Merino/Trossard upfront.

What?

We wanted to buy Sesko last Summer and he wasn't available. So instead opting for a second, third or fourth option (like most clubs would do), we bought in nobody for a thin front line.

That was a potential issue in the first half of the season. But it became critical when we suffered injuries that left us with two fit adult forwards (one of which is an absolutely finished Sterling) all before the Winter transfer window shut. And we still didn't sign anyone, effectively writing off the season.

Seems like a hell of a leap.

If you think that's how transfer plans work, then I have a bridge to sell you.

I know you're trolling though, so a smart post.

Short term, or for the rest of the season, its likely Nwaneri in the left wing or CF role, interchanging with Trossard/Martinelli.

Longer term, Nwaneri needs to play as the #10 in our team, particularly on that left side.

His close control, ability in tight spaces and use of open space makes him ideal for our left side, as he is able to take LW, LCM, CF roles situationally. I like Nwaneri there as well because that's the side of the pitch that has the spaces when the play is switched. And like how Hansi Flick uses Raphinha in space on that left side, I'd like to see the same for Nwaneri.

So something like....

Martinelli ----- Havertz ----- Saka
---------- Nwaneri ----- Ode
---------------------- Rice

With further upgrades to Martinelli and Havertz.

Id prefer seeing Ode and Nwaneri switched in your team long term. I think Nwaneri has already shown he has a better shooting technique and has a nice catalogue of finishes from that right half space, it would be a shame to not fully utilise it.

I agree. Also, Odegaard seems to want to drop deeper. Also, on the left he might be forced out of the slow 360 dribble he often does that slows down our attacks.

Horrible team. Cynical and not in the 'dark arts' way, just a diving moaning bunch of guys who convinced themselves the title was their divine right because they went close.

Rice giving it big on 75 mins while needing a win, Lewis skelly diving anytime anyone goes near him, about 12 minutes a match spent waiting to take corners.

Rotten team and ultimately losers

Closer to 10th than top and act like multiple title winners. Such an unlikeable bunch of wankers

Heaven has endeared himself even further to me for shoving Gabriel as he was whining to the ref for a penalty

I get Arsenal are light in attack atm but feels even weirder they managed to score as many as 7 at PSV. How did that happen?

Anyway, Liverpool's title is done now and probably more about preserving that 2nd place and mainly focus on Champions League.

We’re shit and we still should have won today. You’ve gone backwards.

I don't know if you've watched us recently but we've been pretty shit ourselves recently, certainly at generating chances. The PSV wasn't the norm, it's an anomaly. 1 goal in 3 games now.

Tony Pulis' Stoke but with diving. There's a lot to dislike.

If we are Stoke, what do u make of Utd approach a lot of times?

Oh we're shite, absolute shite.

Arsenal on the other hand, your players and fans act like you're going to go back to back league titles or something. If you don't win the champions league this season it's gonna be 0 trophies since Covid....

Should be embarrassed parking the bus against Stoke at home! It is interesting that Man Utd actually had a decent second half, but their fans feel it necessary to have a go at Arsenal instead of talking about the positives like Heaven.

We really let a couple players go here....Heaven and Chido(I think he will be decent) we should have given Heaven a chance at some point. We had enough FB injuries over the last two years.

We are miserable in attack. Nothing worked for Nwaneri today, and Odegaard doesn't look to be pulling the strings like the last two seasons.
