Aquilani to Liverpool

Juve: 10 million for Aquaman

ALBERTO AQUILANI may find his Liverpool career is over after just 12 months.

The Italian midfielder, 25, had a horror debut campaign at Anfield after a £17million move from Roma.

He arrived as a crock after ankle surgery, only made his debut in late October and started just THIRTEEN games all season.

Now the Reds, who will offload a host of fringe players this summer, are considering whether to make him the highest-profile departure of all.

Juventus have previously expressed an interest in taking him back to Serie A - and believe they could get him for a cut-price £10m.

Juventus seems ready to offload Diego. Now that's a talent we should consider. He may have not lit Delle Alpi alight but its certainly not his fault + would be fantastic in the 4-5-1 system.

Alberto Aquilani could make an unexpected return to his homeland after Roy Hodgson revealed that Liverpool were considering loaning him to an Italian club.

Yesterday, the injury-plagued midfielder's agent refuted claims that he would rejoin Serie A amidst reported interest from Napoli and AS Roma.

Aquilani, 26, has yet to feature in any competitive games under Hodgson and the Liverpool manager has now revealed that the club are mulling over a loan offer due to their failure to guarantee him regular first-team football in the coming season.

"At the moment we are considering loaning him to an Italian club," he said.

"I didn't want to use him tonight in case the loan goes through because for Aquilani it's very important this year that he plays regular football, every week as the number one man on the team sheet.

"I can't promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties.

"It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year."

They might end up taking a massive hit on this transfer, and says a lot about Roy Hogdson's rigidity I feel because if properly used he could be a gem for Liverpool.

He is a good player no doubt but he is far too injured. Roy can't sit there and wait for him to come good. I doubt anyone is willing to risk any sort of significant money on him and hence a loan makes sense.

If properly used maybe, but I don't see him offering enough defensively for Hogdson to risk him in central midfield ahead of that extremely dodgy back four. Gerrard atleast gets about and stuck in. And if he is injury prone aswell that's a big problem for that kind of job.

If Mascherano stays they have a huge amount of midfielders to try and keep happy. If Mascherano leaves then they have a huge problem with adequate quality defensive midfielders. Hodgson might be a bit rigid but if you look at the rest of that Liverpool team you can understand why he wont want to gamble on Aquilani. He will surely have to bring in another defensive midfielder if Mascherano leaves.

Stomach bug - again.

I think he could play in the hole to great effect, feck Joe Cole in the middle just stick him out wide and let Aquilani show how influential he can be, and in doing this you have more quality and creativity spread throughout the team with Jovanovic out. Unless you mean that Jovanovic performs an important defensive role and thus moving Joe Cole out there still causes the same problem, which is probably a fair point.

I think I've just got something against Hodgson really, find it hard to get on board with the praising in his case I must say.

At the end of the day I don't particularly see the benefit of Joe Cole in and Aquilani out as a straight position swap, even if the dynamics in their game is different I don't think that outweighs the quality in his game. It seems to me he's essentially playing the exact same formation that he played at Fulham, and Joe Cole is more like Gera than Aquilani, but I think he'll get shown up if he continues to play such a basic - if effective - system.

Or maybe it's just that I hope he will. Who knows.

At the end of the day atleast he can rely on Cole to be fit for more than 50% of the matches (red cards not withstanding). Can't base a team round someone like Aquilani sadly.

liverpool will probably sign someone from madrid and keep hold of mascherano as noone wants him

Liverpool should offload Mascherano for about 25million an buy Diarra for about 8....

Aquilani is underrated here imo. If he can get a consistent run of games, I think he has the skills to be a pretty good MF.

Certainly has a good shot in him, decent on the ball, fair passing and if he's fit he does have enough stamina to run the game.

I for one watched him play against Chelsea last season and was fairly impressed, he played well against us when he was at Roma too.

It's that stupid 18m price tag and the inability of Rafa to really use him that's degressing him.

Aquilani set for Reds exit
Reds ready to loan struggling midfielder to Italian club
Last updated: 20th August 2010

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has revealed out-of-favour midfielder Alberto Aquilani is set to return to Italy.

The injury-hit playmaker has struggled to make an impact after moving to Anfield from Roma and discussions are under way for him to return to his home country.

The 26-year-old was signed by former Reds manager Rafa Benitez as a replacement for the influential Xabi Alonso but his first season on Merseyside was hampered by injuries.

Aquilani had a history of injury problems when he joined in a reported £20million deal and it was more than two months into last season before he made his debut for the club.

Aquilani was left out of Liverpool's squad for Thursday night's UEFA Europa League play-off against Trabzonspor and Hodgson admits he will probably be loaned out to a Serie A side.

Hodgson said: "At the moment we are considering possibly loaning him to an Italian club, but nothing is sure about that yet so I don't have anything definite to report.

"I didn't want to use him (against Trabzonspor) just in case the loan goes through, because for Aquilani this year it's very important that he plays regular football, every week, as the number one man on the teamsheet.

"I can't promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties.

"It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year."

Bizarre, a player of undoubted quality and yet they will plod on with Lucas, Poulsen and co?

I used to enjoy watching Aquilani at Roma yet he never even got a fair crack at Liverpool. Of course the injuries and then Rafa being Rafa played a part but i thought Hodgson with his Italian connect and ability with the language could have worked with him to get the best out of him.

A shame, i wanted to see what he could do in the Prem with a fair crack.

That's what Roma probably thought before they saw Rafa bumbling down the road.

 Too true, too true. Still a mistake to sell him though. He could still prove himself given a good run of games and being injury free.

I dont think he's been given a fair run of games to be fair to Aquilani. You cant be too shoddy if you have a few caps for Itaiy. Seems to be like Kleberson for us. Played a few games, scores 1 or 2. Then gets injured. And suddenly sold without given a good run of games.

He's not being sold, he's being loaned where hopefully he can prove his fitness because as you can imagine, his value is decreasing all the time because of the injuries. If he goes back to Serie A and has a good year, he could either come back to us for a second chance or we could recoup a fair chunk of money on him.

Let me guess, Benitez never actually wanted to sign Aquilani. It was the "owners" who forced him to sign him, just like with Robbie Keane.

Anyway, fair dues to Hodgson. He's making a good start at clearing out the mess that Benitez left behind.

Can't see this being true

if they are after macherano a few will have to leave as they are over their squad quota already

would be a great signing for madrid - liverpool should try and engineer a swap involving out of favour benzema and lassana diarra

what a waste of money aquilani has been - i wonder if rafa might try and get him on loan

I'm very surprised at this.

After Gerrard, he's their most talented midfielder and Liverpool spent serious money on him.
I could think of a dozen players from that squad that I'd be willing to let go before I get rid of Aquilani.

So, they're letting him go on loan. Mascherano will likely be away soon enough. If Gerrard gets injured (which he probably will do), it doesn't leave them a whole lot of cover in that midfield area.

What does their midfield song go like again?

Really? He's been making lots of noises abot wanting to leave for over a year now, but unlike with other players, I've not actually heard any clubs espressing any interest in him. The only place I could see him going is to Inter to join up with Rafa.

I think Inter were possibly waiting until they got the funds from the Balotelli deal, and now they have it they might make a move pretty soon.

He wants far too much time on the ball and when playing that position in this country where so many teams have their midfield directly infront of the back 4 to close down any space I just can't see him succeeding there.
