Yeah, that's it. It's just not that good - everyone else was wrong all along. I've genuinely never heard of anyone who actually watched a few episodes before giving up not liking it.
You keep mentioning shock factor as well - what exactly are you looking for? What would be your top 5 shows? IMO the main strength of The Wire is the series as a whole - the way its build up, all the characters, different settings etc. I suppose it's not really that great if you can't appreciate things like that.
That's not really what I said.
I said its not my opinion that The Wire is not in the top 3 of the most critically acclaimed shows. I've searched high and low for critics rankings and its fourth at the highest.
Not really sure how that confuses you so much, but then again English isn't my first language so I could probably have constructed it better. Anyway:

The point being that a lot of people give up before giving it a proper chance, because it's a slow starter that introduces a lot of different characters. You've clearly put in the time, so you're the first one I've heard of that actually did get past the start that doesn't like it.
Only lies contradict truth, but lies are demonstrably lies and truth is demonstrably truth.
much potential for epicness
Watched the first episode of Top of the Lake and it wasn't bad. Elisabeth Moss' voice was a bit weird though, I'm not sure if she was trying to put on an accent at times or what.

During which season does wire really pick up, just completed season 2 Episode 1. Its a good series no doubt but I had expected it to be lot better after reading some of the posts in here.
Some even rated it as among top 3 TV series of recent times. Maybe for me it has become a case setting your expectations too high.
David Simon's new miniseries, Show Me A Hero starring the awesome Oscar Isaac and directed by the decidedly less awesome but still overqualified Paul Haggis, has the critics absolutely frothing. Starts on the 16th.

So watched 6 episodes now of season 4 and I'm struggling to keep watching. The storyline is crap, there's nothing noteworthy happening and it feels more like a monotone Eastenders rather then the best show ever created. The main characters are gone and the ones on now are failing to make an impact. I've seen on Wiki that this season is the highest ever rated with 98/100 but I think its the worst thus far. I don't know, maybe there's no shock factor for me and that is why it feels this way.

It did get me a little hooked up later in first season. But to be the first TV series ever it's not doing the trick for me.Half way or a bit more through series 1 IMO. Peaks with season 4. And I'd rate it first never mind top 3.
The Wire isnt overhyped, its just not 'entertaining' as other shows can be but its a multi layered social deconstruction of how a city (dys)functions. The writing is up there with the best and 95% of the cast is excellent. Its lauded as one of the if not the best show around because thats what it is.
Cannot wait for this. It's almost a biopic considering how much of it is based on real people and events. Plus there's actually people in it who are really from that life.Maybe it helps to see The Wire more as a documentary than a drama series.
I couldn't get into it either. Finished season one, and it's a fine show with some very good writing but I just never really felt an urge to continue. The pace is excruciatingly slow during the first half of season one.During which season does wire really pick up, just completed season 2 Episode 1. This looks very good!
The original movie was one of my all time favourites! Yul Brennah!... Oh man. That guy played an awesome gunslinger.

Indeed.Plus there's actually people in it who are really from that life.
I'm watching it, it's not great, but it occupies 40mims once a week when I haven't got anything important to do.Can't wait for Show Me a Hero. That trailer looked excellent and the pedigree behind it is impressive.
Has anyone watched The Last Ship? I was thinking of giving it a go, largely because Rhona Mitra is
