Television Anyone recommend me any TV Shows?

I think Breaking Bad is the perfect, modern Spaghetti Western in TV format and you'll be hard pushed to find another TV show that will do acting, writing, suspense and sheer drama on that sort of level. It's not worthy of being ranked alongside the other greats like The Wire and Mad Men, but as sheer entertainment in TV format I don't think much else compares.
I found The Shield much more entertaining than Breaking Bad.

If that is shocking to you, then so be it.

I am looking for some new drama series to start watching. My favorite shows are Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Other ones I greatly enjoyed have been The Shield, Sons of Anarchy (although it had some bad moments in season 3 and 4), Homeland seasons 1-3, Vikings, Rome, True Detective.
To a bit lesser degree I also liked Prison Break, The Tudors, Orphan Black.
I also enjoy stuff like Everwood, OC California or Gilmore Girls. However, I am looking for something dark and thrilling right now.

Series I thought that I might like but did not in the end have been The Wire, Shameless, 24 and Lost.

So based on that - which of the following series could fit the bill:

Deadwood
The Killing
Oz
House of Cards
Sleeper Cell
Broadchurch
Top of the Lake
Good Wife

I want something with shocking twists. Which show out of The Killing, Broadchurch and Top of the Lake is the most similar one in style and tone to True Detective season 1?

Thanks everyone!
The Sopranos. That definitely has a few shocking twists.

Watched the whole 2 season run of Party Down last weekend. A "cancelled too early" show about a group of selfish actors working at a catering company. Jane Lynch left for Glee after season one, and Adam Scott left for Parks & Rec after season two so the whole thing sort of ground to a halt, but it's really good. Perfect for fans of The League/Always Sunny etc.

I just watched the first season of this the other day. Looks like it was put together for $50 on everyone's spare Sunday but it has an ace cast and a lot of charm.

The casts ridiculous when you consider the people that show up, or have recurring roles too, like Ken Jeong, J.K Simmons, Kristin Bell, Kevin Hart, Steve Gutenberg, McLovin...and a bunch of other people from stuff who's names I don't know. It was co-created by Paul Rudd and directed by Fred "Wonder Years" Savage so it had a lot of industry cred on its side, but it seems it just didn't quite work out. Got terrible ratings too. Shame.

I loved Breaking Bad but it's a level below The Sopranos, which is in turn below The Wire.

The Wire > The Sopranos >>>> Breaking Bad

I agree with both of these posts -- for me Breaking Bad would be on roughly the same level as The Shield (actually, TS would be a higher). Something like this for me: The Wire > The Sopranos > Deadwood> Breaking Bad/The Shield.

I think it's one of Nilsson's favourite shows, he kept bitching to me about watching it which I eventually did. I have to say I enjoyed it, it's rather crass if I recall but it has a lot of charm despite that.

Really good show which really settles during the end of season one, season two is class. A third season would be nice as well, but it's one of those concepts which would be hard to make into a long living project in my opinion.

Is this list compiled to show the ranking starting with the most boring to the most entertaining shows :) ?

Sorry just joking. However, I enjoyed BB and The Shield much more than The Wire so according to your logic I should watch Deadwood before The Sopranos.

BTW anyone seen the show "Braquo"? Has been compared to The Shield and the Wire.

I've watched Braquo. First season is pretty good and has all the action and pace of The Shield but at no point offers the gritty realism and meandering texture of The Wire.
Sadly each season after seems to become more and more ridiculous and although still enjoyable it lacks the overall quality to be truly memorable.

In summary - it has plenty of action, some fantastic scenes (and locations courtesy of Paris) and some interesting characters but ultimately doesn't live up to the comparisons. Worth a watch if you have the time and don't mind subtitles (or speak French) but definitely not a 'Must see'.

Watch Luther if you haven't sen it. That's definitely dark and thrilling. Those series on your list don't all match that bill.

Witnesses been mentioned yet? New French cop show on Channel 4, started last week. Very promising first couple of episodes.

After reading back the thread a few pages, I started Bloodline. Watched the first 3 episodes and it's very good, and after the match I'll probably watch a couple more even though it'll be close to 4am. Holiday binges

Wasn't sold on Bloodline at first, but damn it is getting good (won't say what episode so as not to spoil anything...).

Parks & Rec. Just watching the pilot, it's basically another 'The Office', right?
The first series (only 6 eps) is a bit shit. They totally changed the format in the second series because people said exactly what you said, and it is far, far better from then onwards. One of my all time favourite comedy shows.

I'll stick with it. The Office comparison wasn't meant as a criticism, I loved that show until they ruined it. Just had that feel to it.

Aziz Ansari is the best character so far, but the main woman is basically a female Michael Scott.

Yeah they completely change her too. It's definitely similar to The Office (same writers) but far more slapstick and less mockumentary once the second season gets going.

You won't be calling Tom/Aziz the best character after Duke Silver gets going.

I liked the first season of P&R as much as I liked the rest, I've never really understood why everyone throws the first season under the bus.

Hot Wet American Summer - The new Netfliz show and TV spin off of an unexceptional 2001 summer camp film that just so happened to star a bunch of people who eventually became really famous. I'm two episodes in, and so far all I've worked out is this:

A bunch of really famous people who were once in a low rent summer camp thing before they were all realy famous, sat around at a Hollywood after party one night, after a lot of drink and a tonne of coke, and reminisced about that "really fun low rent summer camp thing we all did" and how it was "basically just a piss up holiday in the woods, wasn't it?" They laughed and sang and did a bit more coke, and one of them joked about how now they were all really famous and shit, they could probably get a TV show made, and just piss off into the woods for a few weeks and get really fecked up and people would probably watch. They laughed again, and sang again, and took some more coke, but as the weeks and months passed, and all the drunken coked up parties inevitably descended into the same nostalgic conversation, one of them (one of the less famous ones. Someone who wasn't actually that famous at all, but recognisable in a "what have they been in again?" kind of way) decided to actually try and get the ball rolling. They'd been secretly hoping one of the really famous ones would get around to it eventually, as it might be the thing to finally jump start their career, but that didn't look like happening. They were all talk. Besides, it could be really fun, right? Especially if they took a lot of drink, and a tonne of coke, and some silly 80s outfits from the prop cupboard at SNL. So all these really famous people cleared 6 weeks in their summer schedule, booked out a cabin somewhere, brought a bunch of silly outfits, a lot of drink and a tonne of coke, and just sort of pissed around for a bit, and filmed it.

In the course of writing this I've managed to half watch two more episodes, without forming any opinion on whether it's any good or not, though Archer has been turned into a can of vegetables by a barrel of toxic waste. Which is something.

Stuff/10.

Anyone ever seen Review? 8.3 on imdb.

I think it's like Idiot Abroad but not abroad and not an idiot so just a guy doing stuff and reviewing it.

Did anyone else ever watch Spiral? (Engrenages in French) It's a BBC/Canal + series, set in Paris. It's a police/legal drama, a lot more gritty than the slickness of American shows like Criminal Minds,CSI, Law and Order etc. Anyway, I just started the second series. 8.5 review on imdb. Really enjoy it.
@JPRouve @kouroux @Gerrard in Istanbul don't know if any of you have seen it?

You know what, I had this series in my HDD for a while and haven't gotten around to watching it, just like you described it, I only heard good stuff about it so hopefully when I do I'll give you my review on it. Generally speaking, Canal + produce the best french TV shows because they have "americanized" their way of filming.

I'd certainly recommend it. It has a nice blend of certain American techniques, without being too 'Hollywood'. Let me know what you think! :D

It's a good show, I watched the first two seasons, and then lacked of time and didn't had the courage to watch the seasons I missed. But like Kouroux said Canal+ produce very good shows.

I have the first 3 on DVD. We'll see after that how arsed I am about watching the other 2. As an aside, where in France are you?

Montpellier, in the South.

Very nice! I studied in Bordeaux a few years ago. The rain was worse than Dublin  Closest I've been to Montpellier is probably Perpignan.

I'm guessing that's something to do with Ron Swanson?

I'm on S01E05 and his love for bacon wrapped shrimp was funny.

You'll love him. He's great.

Honestly the change is massive. You're right. Leslie was just a Michael Scott in season 1 but after that became funny without being stupid.

Lots of the supporting characters really grow into their own and lots of random characters from the town become identifiable and bring funny cameos. It's like Simpsons in that way.
