Television Anyone recommend me any TV Shows?

The Wire. Again.
As other said, the wire again so you can re-evaluate your opinion. Also you'll be over the shock of season 2 and can properly appreciate it.

Hehe thanks guys but I'm pretty sure I got it the first time I watched it. :D

I just want to say again that I really, really liked it. It was definitely one of the best shows I've seen but it didn't make me want to immediately call all my friends and rave about it nonstop.

[SPOILER ALERT]

I guess perhaps because it was just too "real".. The wins that the good guys got weren't really that great and instead everything just sort of moved on to the next which left me a bit dissappointed. They built everything up for so long and so meticulously but many times there was no real bang at the end to finish it off..

Like a lot of the top baddies didn't get what they deserved imo. Avon for example got a shit jail sentence the first time, was out before you could know it and was then caught on a fecking parole violation.. he was the top dog for most of the show and they built the whole thing around catching him as the Nr.1 drug dealer, yet when they finally did he just surrendered in a room full of guns and you don't even know what happened in the court room..
Then when Marlo arrives as the new kingpin the cops can't get to him either with one of their own helping the bad guys (after first helping the cops, which really got my hopes up).
The greeks were barely on the cops radar either, which again is very real and lifelike but still dissappointing.
Then to top it all off Omar gets killed by the carachter I hated the most in the entire series as well, which surely didn't help!:D

I get that the show was a representation of what the drug scene is like, and guys like Bunk doesn't get many chances to say a one-liner before throwing the bad guy out of a 50-story building in real life, but still.. they could have at least gotten one truly big win.

It was sort of like The Departed, amazing build up the whole movie, great actors, great script etcetc the whole shebang, and then a shit ending.. but with The Wire it was several small so-so endings instead of one big crappy one.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

What kind of stuff do you like?

Horror - The Exorcist (genuinely some of the best horror ever made)
Mindless action fun - Banshee
Drama - OZ (prison series, great first three seasons)
Superhero stuff - Gotham (dark and proper cartoonish superhero show, much better than the tweeny crap that is Arrow and Flash)
Scifi - 12 monkeys (some of the best written scifi ever)
Scifi2 - The Expanse (big production type stuff, sort of like BSG)
Comedy - Arrested Development

I guess I'm pretty mainstream when it comes to tv-shows. Entourage, GoT, Suits, Breaking Bad, True Detective, Dexter.. things like that. Sort of enjoyed The Wire as well.. ;)

Horror or scifi aren't really my thing, so will have to give them a pass. I've heard good things about Gotham but would prefer shows that are finished since I tend to go through them pretty fast and don't want to sit and wait for new episodes.

Gomorra (Italian TV series). Absolutely amazing and similiar to the Wire.

Also heard good things about that. Will check it out but I might give Sopranos a go first.

No you didn't. The Wire is one of those shows that gets better for each viewing as you pick up on 'new' stuff all the time.

I'm sure there's stuff I missed or links that I didn't get, but I doubt there's something big enough for it to change my whole perception of the show.

@Zlaatan it's because shit never changes.

Yea you're right. I'm actually a huge fan of movies based on real events, so it's not like I have a huge problem with things not being fairytales. But I was just a bit dissappointed by the somewhat flat ending to so many important things after building up the story for so long.
It's got a lot to do with my own expectations so I guess I have to blame myself more than anything.

I have a few suggestions for some shows people might not be aware of.

Dark Skies *
Set in the 60s, it follows an agent of "MJ12" - a secret group dealing with the invasion of an alien species.

Sadly cancelled after a season, it mixed real events with the alien agenda, giving an alternative explanation for what happened and why.

Profit *
I believe this helped pave the way for more recent "anti-hero" type shows.

Also cancelled after a season, it stars Adrian Pasdar as a psychopath working his way up the ranks of big business.

If you can ignore the dodgy "VR" CGI it's worth a watch.

American Gothic *
Another anti-hero, Lucas Buck is the sheriff of a small town who happens to have some vague, creepy "powers".

The show is quite difficult to describe.

Chicago PD
I'm not typically a fan of crime based shows but I really like the characters in this and the cases are more interesting than usual.

Main character is Voight, an ...anti-hero? (Hmm I'm not sure I love how this list is reflecting on me).
A detective quite adept at "persuading" suspects to cooperate.

Carnivale
Another show difficult to describe and in truth at times to watch.

If you stick with it though it's a very unique and creative tale.

*Disclaimer:
I first watched those when I was a teenager and although I think they still hold up, it can be difficult to judge. I believe they say our music tastes are set around those years and the mind can be a strange thing.

This show seems to have very positive reviews on IMDB with users saying it should have been aired on HBO instead of network television. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

I am always wondering about the praise The Wire gets. Not that it is really bad but I stopped somewhere in the middle of season 2 as it seemed just too slow. More like a documentary than a Drama series.
Maybe this is due to fact that I have watched after stuff like Breaking Bad, The Shield etc.

Might give it another try later.

Poldark! You know it makes sense.

Malaka.

It may be just personal opinion. Honestly, I find Breaking Bad and the Shield absolute shit compared to the Wire. The only series that comes close, IMO, is probably the Sopranos.

And Mad Men. Everyone should watch that. The Leftovers too.

I think shows like the Breaking Bad differ from The Wire and The Sopranos in the sense that the latter two are both shows where you have to pay attention closely to what happens in each episode. In the Wire I notice that it is only boring when I am not paying attention, but when you do you notice these little hints here and there that make everything so much better and line it all up.

With BB it's kind of more mainstream, which is not a bad thing. It's easier to follow I feel and I guess it's more relaxing to watch BB than TW or TS.

I'm finally on the Rick & Morty bandwagon. I watched a couple of episodes a year or so ago and it just didn't click with me. Gave it another go a couple of weeks back and it is a riot.

There's some pretty deep moments in it too:
The bit at the end of an episode, where Rick tries to kill himself, but falls asleep just before the laser beam goes off. Damn, yo.

It gets serious belly laughs too. More than any other animated show, for me. I had to pause it after the first time I saw the Ants In My Eyes Johnson bit. I couldn't breathe.

I'm sure I have talked about Carnivale before, it's such a wonderful series - terrible it was only around for 2 seasons. Perhaps suffered from the timing of when it aired because in today's climate, I think it would've gotten more support to continue but surprisingly HBO axed it due to the costs of the show. At the time $2million/episode which is nothing compared to the nearly 10 million for GoT épisodes.

Might seem risky to partake in something that wasn't around for very long but the quality is extremely high IMHO

Anyone watched 'The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst' yet?

I need new material.
Yes, it was discussed a lot on here when it first came out, it's brilliant and you should definitely watch it.

DO. NOT. GOOGLE until you have watched the entire thing.

Anyone watching El Chapo on Netflix? I'm about 3-4 episodes into it. The main character isn't as interesting yet as Pablo Escobar but it's still good fun.
