Television Anyone recommend me any TV Shows?

Lucifer is cringeworthy; Magicians are very childish; The Billions are great; didn't watch the player
How is the Magicians "very childish"? Its a fantasy show with college students.

And the Magicians has been consistently really good since an early rough start.

Can any one strongly recommend me Stan Lee's Lucky Man? I started watching it, but just like Lucifer, it was just another crime procedural. Hard to really like them at the moment, though the story has potential.

Judging on the first 5 episodes the characters are consistently stupid and relationships between them are completely unrealistic (and yes, I know that it's a fantasy series). Does it really gets better after the first 5 episodes?

11.22.63 worth a watch?
It's very nice, unlike "Under the dome" for example. The last episodes are not as good as the first one, but overall it's a very interesting series

No, it does not. We do have feck magic, time travel and time loops now though.

For those looking for a new comedy show to watch, I'd probably half heartedly recommend The Last Man on Earth. The story is great, but the jokes were just very typical SNL types. So if you like SNL, can watch it and enjoy it more than I did. Season 1 was average, but I have liked Season 2, a bit more. Nothing great, just a little time pass.
I watched the first season cos I liked the concept but thought it was becoming very repetitive, but season 2 was much better and more enjoyable. It's just re-started with a 'twist' at the end which should open up some new possibilities.

Yeah definitely, it's very good and it's only 8 episodes long.

Also, American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson is excellent.

Loving OJ. didn't realise it's actually a series as well, apparently the next one is about hurricane Katrina.

I never said AHS was better than ACS.

VorZakone said he liked the concept of ACS and it reminded him of True Detective. Is the concept not similar?

I never said you did, that's why I didn't quote you. Why are you so "me, me, me" all the time? What about the rest of us RiP?

you're right, he did say concept, which I guess is fair.

I didn't say you said I said it was. I was just clarifying, don't want to be put in the same bag as those people. ACS has been several notches above any season of AHS (although the first one was good).

The characters are supposed to be very flawed people and they are even more unlikeable in the books. And what relationships are you talking about that are completely unrealistic?

It does get better after its first 5 episodes, imo it has been really steady since the midway point of the season. The characters grow on you a lot throughout the season, at least for me, they did. Even the initially unlikeable Penny character becomes ok after a while.

Les Revenants (The Returned) 2012

I accidently stumbled across this absolute gem of a series (there is a US version but the original French one is considered far superior by critics). Its basically about a group of school students who die in an horrific bus crash but 4 years later they all re-appear, unaware that they have died. Its very creepy, especially when they turn up at their homes like nothing has happened, and the effects their return has on their loved ones.

Many people here watched the Italian mafia series Gomorrah? I was hooked watched the first season, it's extremely well made and there are a few intriguing characters. Season 2 should be starting soon.

How did it not get better? And it seems like you have watched all the episodes so far, which is weird if you dislike the show.

Mate, I lasted for three seasons of Battlestar Galactica and Lost, this is nothing, child's play.

I eventually did see the rest of BSG though.

As for The Magicians, definitely not better for me. Messier though. There are some interesting ideas, but it feels so jumbled in without cohesion in plot. Poor script, poor directing, I guess. And now they even added time travel and time loops. Wonder how that will turn out. One episode left, lets see.

So you think BSG and Lost were crappy/average shows too? They were both flawed shows but they're generally considered great TV shows by most people, their endings aside. (both shows are guilty of having disappointing endings)

The Magicians definitely did get better from its earlier episodes, including the quality of the dialogue. The characters initially don't make a good impression on the viewer early on but by the end of the season, they're all a lot more likeable and they are more developed. I'll agree with you on the lack of cohesion in the plot sometimes and the show is definitely guilty of moving the plot & character development too fast. But there is a pretty good story in there so far IMO, even if the execution isn't necessarily great.

For the record, I watch all kinds of shows (with the exception of reality shows, generic procedurals and those awful laughter track sitcoms) and I adjust my expectations accordingly for each show. Mad Men is probably my favorite show of all time, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying a show that's considerably worse in quality yet still highly entertaining. Shows like Arrow and Flash can be fun to watch as well, even though they have nothing meaningful to say. The Magicians is kinda like that, although I'd put it above shows like Arrow and Flash because The Magicians is more character driven and has a far more interesting plot/setting.

Also I think that if you're watching shows for multiple seasons despite not really liking them, you're probably lying to yourself that you dislike them. They're good enough that you keep watching them for multiple seasons, even if you don't think that they're great.

Both BSG and Lost had amazing first seasons, but mirroring each other, with the second season they both got worse and worse. Of course I kept watching hoping for them to get back on track. But they didn't, in my opinion of course, so I quit them at the time because I just had enough. I still have no great desire to see how Lost ended really. I read something about it, but just posts here and there...

Not sure why I came back eventually to BSG, must be Baltar, I just loved him. And yeah, it ended crappy.

You're right, they were good enough, but after their first seasons/mini I wanted more, but got less. Similar to The Magicians, on bigger scale (it had an awesome last three minutes of first episode). It's still better than a shower of procedural shite that's still on, that's for sure.

I watch/like:
The Blacklist (NBC)
The Leftovers (HBO) - Is seriously underrated.
True Detectives
House of Cards/Jessica Jones/Daredevil - Netflix

I also watch Arrow & Flash but I wouldn't recommend it. I think better shows are out there.

I'm actually interested in starting this one. Recently finished The Sopranos.

It's great, though it doesn't have a tongue in cheek spirit of The Sopranos (don't get me wrong, it's one of the best series ever and it touches a lot of serious subjects, but still), it's much darker.

Looking forward to it.

ACS is the name of an asshole journal that has rejected my paper. I got PTSD* when I saw that acronym is this thread.

*and a mental reminder that I'm supposed to work on it now.

Fair enough, I agree with you that Lost had an amazing first season and it got worse after that, although it still hit very high points (its best episode being The Constant which was in season 4). I would say that BSG's first season was by far the most consistent but BSG had its best episodes & arcs in season 2-4. But unfortunately, BSG's seasons 2-4 had a good amount of filler because the Syfy channel (SciFi at the time) wanted ~20 episode seasons instead of 13 episodes (1st season), and then the Writer's Guild strike happened too, which severely impacted the show. If it wasn't for those factors, the show's overall consistency would have been a lot better, even if the ending was the same.

It's really good. We did have a thread about it.

Surprised I haven't seen a shout for The Night Manager, an excellent 6 part Le Carre (Tinker Tailor/Constant Gardener) adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Coleman, Tom Hollander, David Harewood and Hugh Laurie smashing it as an evil plum voiced gun running war monger... Beeb drama at it's very best.

Pretty sure it's in here somewhere, probably around it's premiere date I'd guess. I continued with even if others didn't for whatever reasons. Really liked it, not sure I'd put it in classic tier beeb, something in which I continue to say Line of Duty really is. The current series as strong as ever, though I've not got around to the third episode yet.

Eh, a couple of us were raving about it a few weeks back! It was really good, the penultimate episode probably being my favourite. Laurie and Hollander owned those roles, especially Laurie. What a performance!
