When Liverpool bought van dijk all we heard was “it doesn’t matter how much he cost, if that’s your man you pay what it takes”.

Pay whatever they’re asking, just get it done.

They already have been, Ajax wanted 60, then 80 and now 100 they are taking the piss. Why do you think Antony is so frustrated and VDS "has had to step in".

Our attack is so toothless.

We need him asap, but unfortunately that human phallus, Murtough would rather dick around for a few million quid than be decisive.

We need him and a striker who holds up he ball - desperately

and also your word
What word is that? I ahve yet to see any evidence that Ajax agreed to that two-year plan of Antony's.
Why not look at all their players transfer in past 30 years?

They have always been sellers club, and always let their top young talents leave when there is good opportunity/price for them. The have already build such reputation long long time ago. They sold De Jong when he is 22, they sold De Ligt when he is only 20, both for good money and good opportunity.

They never hold back their players moving to any bigger clubs in bigger league, except us, who always pay good money/respect for their players/club.

The money we are offering for Antony, is no less than De Jong and De ligt.

They are clearly fecking us and Antony around.

So you don’t think when a player asks to leave the club discusses that with them and their agents? (Hint. They do)
This 'sellers club's stuff is nonsense. (For any club in any league.) Yes, Ajax accept their position in the international pecking order and know that their best players will want to leave them for bigger stuff. But if they had a choice, they'd much rather keep everyone at their own club and be able to compete at a higher level. They do have their own ambitions and would like to be able to punch higher. So even if they accept they're not everyone's final destination, that doesn't mean that they'll happily lose whoever, whenever. And in this case, they seem to have decided that enough is enough. (I'm actually surprised there is a price at all, crazy high as it is.)
Why? Because they outspend everyone in their league by a massive, massive amount.

Their closest rivals only win the league when Ajax are either in transition or they have a bad season and underachieve.

Yeah, wrong. PSV have actually won more titles in the 2000s than Ajax, who won almost all their titles under two coaches (De Boer and Ten Hag), and one of which concerns the aborted covid season. You could rather say that Ajax win titles when they have a coach who can successfully bring it all together and PSV doesn't (like Schmidt).

Beyond that, even if they could walk the league at will, Ajax have as their stated goal that they want to get through the CL group stages every year. That requires quality on the pitch.

(I might also add that I generally actually dislike Ajax, before I'm put in their fanboy corner.)

On the contrary, a 100M for him now seems like even a worse idea. We need a RW, a CM, and a CF. We can't get the ball into the final third reliably, and when we do there is no one to finish it. For that fee we can maybe fill two of those.

Back ETH

He insisted on Martinez when the club wanted Pau Torres

He signed Malacia when nobody had heard of him.

Erikson came because of him.

If Erik wants Anthony - make it so

He is maybe 50-60 mil worth but value is based on desperation of club which wants him. We need him so we must pay over the odds sadly.
If we are Bayern, who already has 4 or 5 good wingers then of course that smart move would be to walk away. But we have Elanga on right wing. We are desperate

OK but again your initial question was has anyone ever put in transfer requests, been refused and then still put in good performances afterwards? The answer is unequivocally yes.

Now, if the question is whether anyone in Anthony's exact position has done so (young player in 'lesser' league, I don't know. I don't follow enough football to know.

I haven't really commented particularly on whether Ajax are right to turn down such an offer or not. Realistically it's way over what he's worth and also realistically they'd have sold if this bid was earlier in the window. A bit of craziness all round really.
It was a bit of both actually - yes, we've seen players in the past to go out in the media, but the circumstances are different, which leads to different results.

We have to consider the current scenario and situation. For example player on a top club under big contract, playing in a top league is different thing than the Eredivisie. Then there is how Ajax operate and they do rely on bringing up young players and selling them for profit. It's literally ever since the 90's.

Keeping a talented player that could generate a huge fee would send signals to the next one in line when he wants to join. Either get a release clause in the contract or preferring to go somewhere else.

Of course Ajax have some serious pull due to how they operate, history and generally a stepping stone, but nowadays there are many european clubs that can rival them for that and also play in better leagues with bigger exposure.

good win now let’s get antony and memphis in and have a really good go at the league this year

I'm not talking specifically about South American players, I'm talking about young players in general. People ( essentially fans of the 7-8 super clubs) always say this whenever a transfer doesn't go their way.

Ah interesting, thanks. But then that brings up the advantages Ajax have vs an Arsenal, let alone the true giants.

Putting aside work permits, he's gotten 2 years of first team football (unlikely at Arsenal), 2 years of CL (not at Arsenal), trophies (FA cup in fairness in his 1st season) and an easier league to bed into.

I also don't really think Ajax are trying to prove any point. They've sold multiple key players in this very window, just as they did last window and the window before that. The smart money says they'll be selling multiple key players next window too. That seems to have been somewhat missed in amongst all of the mud flinging towards Ajax.
It was just as an example in this scenario it was Arsenal, but there are even better places for SA players - Porto, Sporting, Benfica - same culture, again CL football regularly. Then there are RB, French teams, solid German teams that also use to shop from there.

They have plenty of rival clubs that can offer what they are offering on top of bigger salaries.

I mean it's different if it was let's say Everton or Villa(Grealish for ex) as clubs in top leagues are loaded and also have the exposure that can give to any top player. Eredivisie - not so much.

Utd confident of reaching an agreement

I think i heard this about FDJ too!!

Seriously, i really hope that this comes through.

Ugh after today, we clearly need another attacker. Ronaldo is as good as gone, Elanga very limited, Rashford cba and Martial permanently crocked.

Surely Ajax have to bend this week. I don't think it'd be wise to keep Antony now. I can't remember hearing a player so vehemently state their desire to leave, normally they're a bit more diplomatic publicly. Can't imagine it's good for them to have an unhappy player who was priced out of a move. It's a gamble, as if he has an average season, or worse, they're not getting the same money for him next year. Just cash in now.

He's 10 levels below Neymar at the same age who was already a major player for Barcelona, it's not even comparable. He's also way below Hazard who was the best player in Ligue 1 2 years in a row. There's far more chances that he's at Raphina's level.
Whilst you may be right, players can often shine in the right set up. Neymar is obviously the better player but Anthony can perhaps offer more in a developing squad like ours. His ability will largely be determined with how he links up with our midfield and take the opportunities presented

After watching today's game, we are definitely light up front. If I had a real preference, it would be to get a more central player, a more traditional striker who is mobile and has pace. However, we're seriously lacking on the flanks, too.

I back this signing. Think it just needs to get done now.
