Tchouameni went for 80 mill euros, played in a better league and was chased by all the top teams PSG included. Yeah he's a DM but everyone in the game thinks he is heading for world class status as can be proved by selling Casmiro. Thats what you think you are getting when you pay these prices. If Ronaldo was 22 playing in Portugal i doubt he would go for much more than 80 unless you are thinking with hindsight. Yeah Felix was more but that an odity. Nunez just went for around 80, yeah you can say 100 but thats the whole package same as Antony. Liverpool are expecting to compete with Haaland for that fee. United should be expecting a top top player in Antony for that fee a well.
Whoops, yes €80m. I'm in a transfer blur.

Point remains: any elite youngster is going for utterly ridiculous amounts now and a young Ronaldo was coveted by all the top clubs in Europe but we were shrewd enough to pull the trigger earliest and take advantage of our relationship with Sporting as well as our mega standing of the time, so no, not hindsight.

Nunez looked very underwhelming and was stated as such by a number of posters in his transfer thread; not a player equivalent to the valuation, but again the seller sets the price, take it or leave it.

Ajax have been resolute with the price since the window opened, but they clearly would rather keep the player than sell. Something tells me they fancy the odds on Antony being highly sought after post- World Cup.

The money being asked for Antony is mental. Ajax can see us coming big-time.

Could have got him for €50mill start of summer ... now we are panicking.

It's a sh1t show
No you couldn't. 50m

Ajax paid 20M for this guy and have to give 20% of resale to his previous club. Ajax is never selling him for 50M. Maybe next year if he has an average season.

Ajax was always going to ask for 80M in this summer. I can see a scenario where if you had started serious bidding 4-6 weeks ago, the 80M offer that just got rejected would probably have been accepted at that point in time. In that sense it is indeed ridiculous that United never made a serious move for Antony earlier in the window. Obviously now, this close to the deadline, Ajax is not going to just accept a clear panic bid on it's star player that Ajax never wanted to sell.

So having negotiations on lower fee months ago, then walking away because they jacked the price to stop all their talent leaving, and now coming back to pay the jacked up fee because we're about to lose 3 games on the bounce fixes "pissing a billion up the wall with nothing to show for it", how exactly? How does it fix the culture of stupidity? This is a prime-woodward move and now we're happy with it?
This is all conjecture. Thereis no indication we had been negotiating earlier in the summer.
It’s not just a personal pride thing, though. We’ve been overpaying for years and the new gaffer and the new management was meant to signify a move away from Woodward’s harried chaos, and that we now had a few geezers in charge who knew what they were doing. Instead their first full transfer window and the precedent they’ve set is that Man Utd are there to be taken for a ride (as usual).

We’re always going to have to pay a Man Utd levy, no doubt, but stuff like this just shows just we’re still a desperate bunch upstairs.
All English clubs overpay.
Ajax are very comfortable financially...they have lost several players and their coach. This was always going to be a very expensive deal.
Furthermore, I don't know where it has been said we are paying the €100m.
With these transfers, we only have two options. Overpay for prefered targests or look for lesser players.
If Antony goes on to be succesful, will anyone care we paid €100m?

I was wondering for a long time especially during this summer why most of the people here or among my United mates have problem with certain players and have totally different view than me on many topics:which players are better, who should play, who is terrible etc.
And after last few days especially in Antony thread i think i know the answer.

Unfortunatelly for a long time we were a team that has absolutely no idea how to play, we did not have any system whatsoever and our good matches or goals were complety
based on some individual brillance rather then some team play.

Especially under Ole we were defending with 7 players and Bruno plus 3 forward were suppose to make sth happen.

if Rashford get the ball 30-40 metres away from goal he 90% of the time would be shooting the ball.

That is why people expect our wingers to be fast with great dribbling to go past players and have good stats providing lots of goals and assist, and that’s it, nothing more is expected from them.

When you see that we had a big hole in central midfield without any DM and other teams were just walking past McFred and our central defenders were challanged 3-4 times as much as they should and Maguire was forced to run after fast forwards 10-12 times a match, everyone expect our defender to be fast to be able to cope with that kind of defensive play that we have seen for a long time.

But to be successful team we will not play like we used to and players that would help us get better should have different skills then the ones you need when you are a team with a bunch of individuals…

When people here prefer Rashford or Elanga to Sancho is just so unbelievable, I am speachless.

When you are a great team like City you do not need great dribblers because you know that everything It takes to score a goal is movement and a good pass.

Gundogan and Foden goals against Bournemouth, or Foden chance when he should pass to Haaland

It is so simple yet so difficult because you need to be on the same page with others and they need to know what and when to expect.

The goal Rashford score from VDB assist in preseason. Sancho did that kind of pass to Martial. Its so rare in our play to spot a movement and find that player with perfect pass but It is vital to score against low blocks that we had problems since i can remember.

But for that to became a standard we need a system and we need right players and we need time to implement…

Players like Sancho, Antony know that kind of play and are like chess players thinking few steps a head but they need a movement around.

When Sancho has a ball close to the penalty area he makes a pass to someone in the centre and moves forward,at the same second RB knows that play and runs forward expecting a pass from that player in the centre when he gets the ball he pass It to Sancho who is free in the box and he can either score or Pass to another free player. That is why he was so effective in Bundesliga because Reus, Haaland, Hakimi, Brandt were moving all the time. He never was a player to go past 2-3 players with his dribbling and score. He rather use his technique to move away from player and spot a runner. The difference is we are not having any runners around to pass to and he needs to do sth on his own but its not that kind of player and he losses the ball.

First of all whoever has the ball needs to be able to pass the ball to 3-4 or more players, when he choose that player and pass to him other players around that player needs to adjust their positions that he can easily pass to them, every second is different and you need to be in a movement all the time.

our standard play in previous seasons is that when someone gets the ball he thinks to whom he should pass and all the other players are just standing there the only movement is from the ball and not players.

it feels like everyone is in their position and they just try to pass to each other without any changes and It is not Effective and especially so predictable and what is worse at the moment of that pass our own players knows that they gonna get a pass at the same time opponents do.
Do you remember that football game from the 80’s that you had small plastic pitch and players attached to It with a springs and you were using that spring to move metal ball around ? Watching United for me is like that.

When you see how Antony plays he is always on the move and finds other players with his passing and take good positions to recieve the ball also gives lot of perfect passes between defenders to player who is running to the box and then that player can pass It to other player. It does not count for Antony stats but without him lot of goals would not happen, just like that Sancho pass to Martial for Rashford goal. You won’t see that on goals and assist stats. We need players with that kind of skills, great movement, passing and understanding the system.

What is more Antony is a beast in pressing and defending which you also do not see in goals and assist table.
Being a good player is much more than stats and Antony is good in a lot of things that we currently do not have in our team.

So forget what we used to play and what kind of players were good to that kind of play, Gakpo would be perfect for Ole to have a player that is only focusing on scoring goals or assisting but having players who are part of a bigger system and few additional passes to make us less predictable is much more important, we just need time.

It does not matter how much player costs when you get the one you want the most, the one who works the way you want.

it does not matter if he plays in Eredivisie or is proven here or there, we could Pay 150 mil for any other proven player and still did not have confidence if It gonna work. All we know is what kind of player Antony is and that he is proven in Ten Hag system and for me that is the biggest proven we need.

if we could make some ranking of what kind of proven you are looking for, being proven playing the same system under the same Manager that you were great would be Tier 1.

We could buy some player that was great in La Liga and at international level for his country or Champions League (which Antony was good at, not La Liga part*) and still did not have assurance its gonna work, at least having player who knows the manager, knows the system and especially manager knows him should give us the biggest chance to work here.

Do you remeber how Athletic Bilbao destroyed us ? They were just moving and passing and we were hopeless. Team effort did that to us not individual brillance.

So let’s just sit and enjoy what we are suppose make some changes and start being a football team that would be destroying other with our brillant plat, shall we ?

Of course not... But then he would also be bucking the overwhelming trend of players who cost over 100m being either a) disappointing or b) an outright failure... So you can see why people are concerned.

The mental impact on player and the expectations that come along with I that much money can't be shrugged off I think.

Why are people obsessed with transfer fees. The Glazers have taken 2.2 Billion out of this club. Imagine those kind of money going into players instead.

Regarding Anthony and 80-100, if he is considered the next prodigy of Brazilian football, just pay the money. He knows the Ten Hag style of football, he hungers for success and he will melt in to the team with all the Brazilians and knowing the coach.

Ajax will soon be the richest club south of London..

Why didn't we push for this deal earlier?

Positive thing is he, unlike FDJ, really wants to come.

and that's the crap part. He's a very decent prospect. Pulling this 100m BS, he NEEDS to be one of the best in the league this season. It's an absolute joke that someone that has so much potential and learning to do is now going to be compared to the best RW'ers in world football. Because how can you not for 100m? What's the most charitable argument for him if we have him by GW 4 and he ends the season with 5 goals 5 assists? Do we write him off? Do we have to sell?

100m, the 6th most expensive signing in PL history, is an unfair burden on someone that has develop over the next 3-4 years, but could be on the scrap heap in 1 based solely on stupid money.

Will admit I can't think of another left footed RW

Olise is the only option I could see moving for a ’reasonable’ amount if his alleged release clause is real.

Moussa Diaby and Yeremi Pino have been linked with moves to Newcastle and Arsenal but for similar amounts to Antony, €70-80m.

Big day today... Actually!

If he's not in the Ajax team at 1:30, this is on.

I cannot understand why we cannot find any left footer ring winger players globally. Antony states isn't that great, I cannot believe that he has the ability to transform Utd. If there is 80-100 mil, we should be buying Salah whether Liverpool sell or not is another thing all together.

Yeah right

Oh it is going to happen. He didn't travel with the squad, means a deal is imminent. Reports going that United are going to raise their bid and expected to be accepted.

Huge impact, yes you're right. But it sisnt stop Madrid paying €100m for Aurilien or Liverpool for Nunez.
ETh has a clear idea of how he wants to play.
Told the club he absolutely needs this type of quality.
The club has a stark choice.
Overpay for this quality or sign a lesser talent that plays in a slightly different position.
The club has a simole calculstion to make. Does Antony under the right conditions have the capacitybto become a 100m player, if they feel yes and they feel they can provide the right conditions, they have to support the coach.
Also, people are not listing alternatives

Salah was scoring 5 goals a season playing for Basel in the swiss league when he was Antony's age. He only started producing the kind of numbers we see now after moving to Liverpool. Salah before joining Roma had close to no end product.

That's a bit unfair though, it's nobody's job in here to know who the alternatives are. It's on the club to have discovered alternatives and be out there finding out who the other Anthony is, or the next one... And he obviously exists somewhere in the world.

It makes perfect sense that ETH wants Anthony, and doesn't have that many back ups, he knows the player and he isn't a scout... But the club should have a raft of options ready. I realise we got rid of our head scouts, but surely the work we've been doing (well I hope that we'd been doing) holds some validity?

From the times, June 23rd

We been on this for 2 months. Looks like Ajax been playing a game of sike with us. We bid 60m, they tell us 70m, we bid 70m they tell us 80m, we bid 80m they tell us 90m etc. So now Antony has to force it because the window is closing soon and then maybe we go for someone else like Gakpo and Antony never gets his move to us.

We haven't bid anything more than £69m and some other sources are saying £59m.

Who can blame them for trying to take us to the cleaners again after paying £57m for Martinez.

I wish we sometimes could walk away from a deal like this when the selling club knows how desperate United are and will pay what they want in the end. I'm sure we are going to end up paying the money Ajax want. We usually do when signing players.

We did that exact thing with Sancho. Walked away and then got him for cheaper the following summer.

69m£ is hardly anything compared to the 126m€ that Atletico paid for Joao Felix who was even less proven or 100m€ what City paid for Grealish.

His level of talent will cost a lot, especially if he has a long contract left and the selling club doesn't really have to sell.

Two examples that worked out fantastically for their new clubs

If he is on strike then his agent has assurance from us that we will make a bid. Ajax will not go bellow our latest bid. So we will really end paying around 90 million for him. Which is mental for player with his stats and reputation.
I want the guy but it just feels wrong. Don't tell me that our scouts can't find right winger for 40 or 50 mil.
We will end spending 150+ million for two Ajax players for who, and lets be honest here, nobody here didn't knew much before this summer.

If I was Antony I would stay. Sure, he wants to leave and hes pissed at Ajax for not accepting the 60m bid. But he should also be pissed at United for not going in for him about 2 months ago when he wouldve gone for likely 40m thereabouts instead

Seems like a lot of this is made up by the reporter? How does he know what will happen after a scenario that he just made up?
Edit isn’t this the reporter that said he would never join us now after seeing the state we’re in after our first two games?

This. He 100% will not become new Mbappe or Ronaldinho. So 100 mil is his maximum price.
Lets wait one year and see what happens. If he kicks ass this year, we can pay 100 mil next summer. If he has average season we can move on or buy him for half price
