You answered the question in your post. Everytime we overpayed for players, we were in the Europa league. A course correction will occur once we become a regular champions league team but even at that, we will still have to spend in excess of €100 million for one exceptional talent from time to time. Madrid just did it, Liverpool closely with Nunez, City a year or so ago with Grealish. Every serious club makes these types of moves. We just get so stuck up on the idea, we are the only ones moving crazy like this but we aren't. We've let the squad run dry last season and let a couple of players that could have fetched good transfer fees and money put towards this window's transfer leave for free or next to nothing. We have to pay the price now for bodies and characters in the team anda chance at success and stability.

We need all three. The issue is that the feckers in charge didn’t seem to agree.

That's applicable, sort of, if we gave Sancho anything like the conditions to facilitate his game that Dortmund did: an excellent overlapping full-back in their own right; willing runners off the ball; dynamic players on the inside who desperately want to play intricate give and go or combination football; an outright attacking team and mindset to drive and drive for the ball and without the ball.
We do not. In fact, we look like a club who have gone out of their way to note facilitate his game, so number comparisons are almost wholly redundant as they pertain to his team and team-mates perhaps more than the league he's in.

They always had the price set higher than what people proclaim the player is worth - it doesn't matter a single bit what people think he's worth when it's us pursuing a player who the selling club have been adamant on his value to them.
In fact, Ajax are very clearly happy to keep the player, which tells its own story.
The saving grace for me are the following.
1. Ajax did very well in the CL, and he was one of their best players. He also plays very well for the Brazilian NT.
2. Ten hag has seen our players up close and personal, has coached Antony before, and concluded that he is indeed an upgrade on what we have.
3. He's an arrogant fecker who is very entertaining to watch, which isn't as common as it once was.
For those reasons I'm excited about this guy. One thing is his Eredivisie performances, another are his CL and international performances for Brazil. Him on the right, Sancho on the left, and fixing our midfield issues could go a very long way towards getting this team to function properly. We absolutely have to get the midfield right ASAP though. A lack of pace is simply compounded by midfield being unable to control the middle of the park and play the right pass.

These generalisations are bs. Antony has something that PL wingers need and that Sancho lacks severely: Acceleration, pace and agility. He'll do well there I'm sure

A young Ronaldo would not be an €80m player, just like a young Rooney wouldn't; you can double that if not more, so it's not really a fitting comparison. €80m is £67m? That doesn't even get you someone like Rice's left leg, let alone a top-potential talent of the ages' interest. Tchouameni just went to Madrid for €100m, a club with more power and leverage than anyone else on the planet, and he's 'only' a defensive midfielder.
Antony is overvalued as he's not in those tiers of 'most certain to be world class' talent that people expect once the numbers go above a certain amount, but you only have to observe the market, and then our predicament, to see why things are this way for us.

Absolutely no way. Having said that, I've never actually seen him play. That fee is crazy though, our track record is awful, plus I think even amazing players would struggle to thrive in this environment.

The comparison with Depay isn’t right, different mindsets. Depay was too immature when he arrived and believed in his own hype, don’t think Antony had the same mindset but only time will tell. Antony knows what’s expected from the manager, tracking back and pressing, Depay was brutal at that and most of the times he came back to help he ended up costing us a goal.

I think he will be good for us. Since Rashford is shite in build-up and possession we need a player with tight control to help advance the ball up the field. Anthony is perfect for this role.
