But Antony and Martinez are two players our coach really wants. AWB and Maguire - well I don't know who the, ugly word, wanted them?
Solskjaer wanted them. He picked them. How many times it must be said. For Maguire he literally said; "Maguire was my no1 target".

Watching highlights, very left footed in all moves, is that a concern? I'm impressed with him and looks great but asking?
I did wonder that but having seen his highlights he seems to have that ability to get half a yard of space to execute his shot or cross. A bit like Salah where defenders will kind of know what they want to do but the hard part is stopping it.

Ajax really are a joke. That bid is more than acceptable.

Problem is;
1) That they will not give a single euro for another winger for years after spending 100 on him. So, are we sure that this one is game changer and will become key player? Because for 100 mil you are buying key player, not depth. When you buy a winger for lets say 30 mil, you can always admit mistake, sell him and buy another. For 100 mil you are just stuck. Like we are with AWB or Maguire
2) That means also less or even zero money for striker or rb.
That’s not true.

Spending has never been a problem for Glazers. It’s the poor management of the people spending the money that has been the issue. They’ve been a parent who just throws money at their child and hope the child turns out to be good.

After pretty much wasting £220m on AWB, Maguire, DVB and Fred, we’re probably going to end this transfer window spending another shed load of money.

I think that’s unfair on Ajax. They’ve always been pretty reasonable in transfer dealings. They’ve lost a lot of players this summer. The season has started. They don’t need the money. They just don’t want to sell the player hence it’s going to take a silly fee to prize him away.

It’s a fine balance for clubs like Ajax who give players a stepping stone to go on to bigger things but at the same time have to keep some balance where they aren’t just shipping players out every time they become good.

100m minimum, could actually require addons on top of that, and Ajax have briefed that they don't actually mind him on strike due to multiple options in the squad. If we don't pay up then the coach will seek to rebuild relations with him after the window shuts.

The ball is 100% in Ajax's court and we are the losers with no plan.

They’re usually very reasonable to deal with - that is until you turn up 3 games into a new season and try to buy their best player just before the deadline. They’ve sold lots of players this summer, including to us. They don’t need to cash so the deal is on their terms.

Honestly, we should cut the crap and offer them 150m. Who cares anymore, club is already a laughing stock.
Not my money not my problem.

Ajax are taking the piss now. We shouldn't bend on this. As good as he is 2 50M players can be more useful in fixing our problems.

It does affect the player though. Maguire seems weighed down by it, and how much would the fan opinion on him differ if we’d signed him for 40m instead of 80?

I don't know why people are so obsessed with the fee. It's better spent on players than sat in the owner's bank accounts. United have to overpay on every transfer, we know this, Woody's great speech about doing things in the transfer market that other clubs can't didn't help.

It matters not if Antony is a 50m or 100m player, if it works out he'll be worth every penny and if he's terrible it would be a bad transfer at the lower end of the scale.

I agree. Finding 2 tricky wingers with better end product than he’s produced in the Dutch league shouldn’t be hard, and you’d have change out of 100m. Only issue is this requires time and proper scouting - something we haven’t given ourselves the luxury of.

Maybe we need G.Nev to air his shock on TV like he did for Arnautovic and the club can be forced into reason.

Can’t get better scouting than coaching him for two years?

We better walk away. They wanted 80m before which we absolutely shouldn't have agreed to but we did. If they still want more then it's pointless bothering with this
They wanted €100M a month ago

Tier 1 for Ajax - we had a 80m bid rejected, the fee is "certainly not under 100m euros"

We are a banter club.
Banter club if we over pay, banter club if we under pay. We cannot win this

Sure, problem is we’re not very good at spending those amounts either are we. I.e Fred, AWB, Lindelöf, DvB etc..

We just don’t make competent signings most of the time.

Solskjaer wanted them. He picked them. How many times it must be said. For Maguire he literally said; "Maguire was my no1 target".
Maguire was our target since Jose's time. And AWB was recommended by our scouting and data analysis team as the top RB from 800 or so players they analyzed in that position.

Of course, Ole did approve those moves so that's on him but it's a very different situation to Martinez and ETH because it's been reported that Martinez was not recommended by our scouts.

€100m for Antony is lunacy. There is no evidence to say he’s worth that much. I can’t see this being anything other than another expensive mistake. Especially when throwing him in to a club in this mess.

If he turns out to be world class, no one will care about the fee but it’s amazing how many risks we manage to sign for so much money.

It's quite obvious that we'll raise the bid and Ajax will eventually let him go this month.

Then it's a case of whether he'll be worth the investment.

No mention of add ons.

I expect the actual fee will be less than this and ads ons, if achieved, will make it around 100m.

It won’t be 100m + ad ons.

for give me for wanting to continue to hammer home 100+ million on a Eredivisie prospect is insane and in the face of mutiple posts of "it's not my money so who cares"...woodward would be proud of that level of delusion.

You don’t need to hammer home anything. Making the same point 4-5 different times in the same thread with green smilies doesn’t add anything to the discussion and just makes you look silly.

There isn't an ever-replenishing money pool, with anything we don't spend at the end of every transfer window going into the owner's pockets.

If we overspend on Antony by 50m, our future spending in this and subsequent transfer windows is then restricted by an extra 50m. That's why people care about how much we spend, it comes with opportunity cost.

It may well be be that that money is still better spent on Antony, even with that in mind. And if we're going to overspend I certainly prefer we do it on our manager's first choice targets. But the "why do people care what we spend?" argument has always been very silly.

It would be fine if this was the last player we needed. With reports/rumours of us looking at RBs, GKs, strikers and maybe even other midfielders, it really boggles the mind.

Hypothetical, but give me De Jong (Tielemans if not possible), Sommer, Carrasco or Ziyech and Morata on loan over just Antony every day of the week

Agreed! This place is sadly becoming a reflection of the state of our club.

Well played by Ajax if they can get 100M for Antony, they already got his replacement for 5M

If I was Antony I would stay. Sure, he wants to leave and hes pissed at Ajax for not accepting the 60m bid. But he should also be pissed at United for not going in for him about 2 months ago when he wouldve gone for likely 40m thereabouts instead

But United did go in for him about 2 months ago.

People need to also factor the huge saving in wages the club is making this season and next (when Ronaldo goes).

Fees are always structured and spread over years/various ad-ons too.

It’s not as simple as you suggest.
