I think a lot of people have taken exception to the very public flirting with United, remember. If he didn't want to join us enough then people are entitled to feel put off. It's not like folk have taken against him out of the blue.

For my own part, I'm very disappointed he didn't join when it looked almost certain. I'd still take him this window, or even January, but it's not a good idea to put things on hold too long and risk him 'snubbing' us again.

His reasons for the fairly sudden change of heart are so obvious and so reasonable, I don't get the annoyance. I'm disappointed, but that's it.

Personally i found his actions v honorable and admirable. Although unfortunate for us.

The thing that annoys me, however, is Atleti's ban was already in place. It was the appeal which was unsuccessful.

As things stood he wasn't going anywhere and that should have been his public position all along. There was essentially no 'change of heart'.

All the smirks, and hints, and people being under the impression it was Champions League dependent was all completely unnecessary.

This. Some fans just seem like scorned ex lovers when it comes to this. There's no way we should 'feck him off' if he becomes available, he's one of the best players in the world for fecks sake

The problem lies in the fact that Mourinho won't always go for that formation when he comes against the Barcas, Madrids and Bayerns.... And then if we played a 4-3-3 during those times, what position would Griezmann play then.... I mean he would be too valuable to be on the bench and you can't drop Lukaku either.... so he would have to play on the wings which in my opinion, it wouldn't be his best position.
But he plays on the wings for France, right?

No, he plays behind Giroud.
Really? Maybe I missed the last game but for the Euro I was pretty sure he was on the wing with Giroud in the middle... well yeah, if he can't adapt to the wings like Mata, we do have a problem in 4/3/3.

Actually he played as main striker for them in the Euro's, his best position is SS and would fit in well behind Lukaku.
How? During the Euro, Giroud was on the field, and he was the main striker for me. Antoine had to play around him.

Antoine was France's best player by a mile he played every game and as a SS.

He won the Golden boot with 6 goals Giroud led the line but only scored 3.

I don't think we need Griezmann. He's not a player I'm keen on personally. But in any case I'd be looking at out and out wingers and then full backs before I looked at him. He's best as a second striker, maybe a 10. That's not really a priority for us.

Why not we got rid of our No.10 in the summer to Everton so it makes sense for me especially since both Griezmann and Mkhitaryan can both play at No.10 or as a right winger.

Would rather get Dybala. It doesn't feel right to say it but Griezmann is quite overhyped. Kinda feel like he has peaked and although I do think he is a great player I don't think he has that thing that makes him an exceptional player.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion and I can understand why some people feel like that about him. Dybala is also a very good player wouldn't be disappointed with him here either.

I just feel its written in the starts with Griezmann he and his family are United fans, idolized Beckham growing up, favourite Number is 7, we haven't had a worthy Number 7 for years etc he just fits.

He isn't a United fan and his family aren't United fans either. It's just his brother.

Much as I love Juan...

Griezmann playing that role he was playing against West Ham. Interchanging with Mkhitaryan.

Pains me to say it, but it would give us an attack like Liverpools, with the no.10s buzzing around a player up top (in our case the big man, Rom), whilst also being capable of doing work out wide and on break with pace.

Would be beautiful and too much for most sides at OT.

France played in 4231 at the exception of the first game with Payet-Griezmann-Sissoko behind Giroud.

If he's available it's a no brainer. He can interchange with Miki between the 10/RW. Mata can come off bench. Sorted.

The number 10 shirt is free also, just saying. (Dybala's new number)

I do think Griezmann is a great player but like I said I just don't think he has that thing that makes him truly exceptional that the likes of your Dembeles,Mbappes,Dybalas and Iscos have.

Also it's not he idolised Beckham it's been misquoted so many times over the years that it's mutated in to idolised. He modelled his game on Beckham because he wasn't all that fast. Neither was Beckham, he was hard work and delivery. You can certainly see the hard work in Griezmans game now a days. The other player he mentioned in the same interview was David Silva.

If I recall his team is also Lyon and not United.

But I'm kinda in the same boat, if he arrived great although the only way I'd play him is in that 352 with Lukaku

Stays at club out of loyalty for transfer ban for their dodgy dealings? He can do one.
His fellow players that he's played with didn't do anything wrong. The fans who have cheered him for the last few years haven't done anything wrong. The manager he loves working with hasn't done anything wrong. The coaching staff that surrounds him hasn't done anything wrong. Those are the people that I'm sure he feels loyalty to.

It was basically the bean-counters in the front office who fecked up. People that he would never have had too much contact with.

Has he ever actually straight up said that he isn't a fan? As far as I know he's never confirmed or denied it, which is probably what most professional players do. At the very least he'd obviously have a soft spot for us, considering he was a Beckham fanboy and his brother is such a big fan.

"I wear long sleeves when I play because of Beckham, he did as well and he is my idol,"

Unless media have completely made up quotes, that's fairly straight to the point.

Where did you get that from? Never seen it before in my life but I know the original Beckham mutation comes from an interview in four four two when he was still at Real Sociedad in 2014.

Also to add Beckham also played for Real at a time when Griezmann would have been 12 years old. I'd imagine much of his time watching Beckham was in Spain.

When asked about who he supports, he has never answered United. He said OM when he was a kid, then Lyon, then Real Sociedad and Atletico. He said that he used to watch United from time to time because his little brother is a fan and that's why he loves Beckham. But he has never answered United, as far as I know.

Doing more research, that exact sentence wasn't exactly what he said, as it was combined with the question that was put to him. It seems to come from his 2016 interview with GQ Magazine.

So David Beckham is your idol?
I'm an absolute fan. On the field, already, he had the class. And outside the field, he is always clean, well dressed, well capped. I remember him at the London Olympics in 2012: he arrives on a boat and his hair cut does not move! I'm really a fan. I play long sleeves because he did too, I also took his number on the 7.

You are, or seem, much more discreet than him out of football, in newspapers, evenings ...
I'm pretty shy, c 'is right. I try to improve by working on this point with my sister (Maud, who manages his relations with the media, editor's note) to show a more open image.

Almost had a fecking heart attack seeing this thread appear again, I feel like I have PTSD over this. Can we never sign him, or just do it immediately with no rumours please

That's just an impressive bit of clear thinking! So simple, yet so rare!

I actually went and found some radio interview with him in Spanish that I tracked through an ESPN. I don't speak Spanish but I heard the word Idola which I guess in Spanish is idol. So you are right.

However I would still say his time probably idolising David was at his time at Real.

I would assume that bringing him in January seems quite likely at this juncture?

If you wouldn't want this bloke as an option in your squad, you have issues.
Completely agree, IMO he would be a perfect replacement for Rooney. And im talking about the Rooney 2007-10.

Would offer us more than both Mata and Miki (and i'm a huge fan of them) taking us to another level

I don't rate Mkhitaryan or Griezmann as wingers. I don't rate Mata as a winger either. Mata and Mkhitaryan are best in the middle. So I maintain the we need wingers and than full backs as a priority over a player like Griezmann.

I agree, we've needed a decent winger for a long time now and even a LB is more of a priority than signing Griezmann imo

They class as creative wingers they dont necessarily have the blistering pace and bomb down the wing like a traditional winger but there crossing abilities and passing are much better.

Depends what Mourinho wants really, it would seem though he wants one traditional winger on the left and a creative winger on the other side.
