Antoine Griezmann

Don't think he's coming here. Definitely not this summer and I suspect we'll have competition from the likes of Barca next summer, so he'll go there. I think the Griezmann ship has sailed.

Hmmm, I thought it was reported that his buyout is now 200m for this summer, but drops to 100m in January? Have a dreamt that? @Damien?

We dont need him by now I feel and his buyout is 200m this summer. And on top, he had a great chance to join us

I know it was only West Ham and the first game of the season but I really liked the look of Pogba-Matic as midfield 2 and Mkhi as a 10 behind Lukaku.
If we Need an additional attacker right now it would be a traditional winger to give us some extra Dimension.

Yes please.

Lukaku
Martial - Greizmann - Mkhitaryan
Pogba - Matic

With the likes of Herrera, Mata, Rashford, Pereira, Fellaini and Lingard on the bench.

Very very strong squad.

Definitely not this summer, that's for sure. But it seems pretty clear that he would have liked to come to us had Atletico not had the transfer ban - given his TV interview a week or two before. Once they got the ban he obviously felt he ought to stay with them for another season, but clearly intends to leave next year given his buyout clause was left at the same level. He's close friends with Pogba, his brother loves us, our number 7 shirt is still available and Beckham was his idol - and hopefully he'll see that we are on our way back to the top (or nearer to it anyway). He may get a better offer between now and us signing him, of course, but as of now my belief is that he and United are still thinking about a deal for next season.

That is correct. Having a thread in here based on an article by The Express quoting Don Balon is bullshit imo. Nothing will happen until January at a minimum, but most likely next summer given Atleti will most likely still be in the CL.

I'm not really sure of the logic of buying a £100m player for a position we won't play in roughly half our games.

Yup, cheers for that.

Griezmann would go to the right then and float in, ala Mata and Mkhi do for us just now.

But I don't think we need him especially since the prices being quoted are 90m and if we are spending that much, I would rather spend that on Dembele who would solve our winger issues.

Great idea! Except for the fact that

1) Dembele will cost way more than £90m
2) Dembele wants Barca, not us. And Barca are flush with cash

Other than that, very plausible

So the solution is to buy a player for that much money and then play him out of position?

Greizmann is a great player, but we really don't play a system that he easily fits into. Shoving great square pegs into round holes has been a problem for us over the years.

His best position is behind the striker, sure, but he also regularly played for Atleti out wide on occasion last season too. After all, he is a wide player by trade. Our RM's don't even sit out wide anyway. Mkhitryan, Mata and Lingard are all our options there and they all drift into the middle of the pitch and operate near our ST.

He can easily play as a right forward in 4-3-3 formation (in fact, that is his original position), or as a second striker in any of 4-4-2/3-5-2.

Anyway, it is a pointless debate (and the sources are as reliable as indykaila). He had the chance to join us this summer, decided against it, so good luck to him. We should not get back to him IMO.

His 'original position' is meaningless seeing as he made his name down the centre. He was never spoken of this highly playing off the right and it would be a tremendous waste of talent to sign him for the right wing.

I'm sure he can and does still do a job there. But it would be a little like arguing that Bale could fill in at LB at times if we signed him I.e. a waste.

Nah, loads of top forwards play that role, Neymar for one. Wouldn't be a waste at all - in fact it would be amazing, he could pretty much play anywhere across the forward line.

His release clause doubled, not happening. Would have looked great v west ham yesterday

Pretty certain we had a deal in place to pay his buyout clause but that changed when Zlatan got injured and our priority big money signing switched to a new number 9.

Big chance it'll happen next season imo.

We won't try for Griezmann again. He made his choice.

That's what I think
And fair play to him - he loves his current club, so perhaps he will retire there. Who knows.
We need to focus on viable targets, who absolutely want to join us.

I think Zlatan will sign for the second half of the season to boost our chances for the league. Problem is, how do you fit Zlatan and Lukaku on the pitch. Has Zlatan ever played as a withdrawn forward?

Ibra will probably rotate with Lukaku. In some games we will probably see them both, but rarely.
Remember, we'll probably play around 60 games this season and Lukaku cannot play all of them. He'll need to be rotated at some point.

He was going to come to us until AM got their transfer ban, then he said he wouldn't leave them in the lurch this season. I'm pretty sure he will leave next year and I'm also pretty sure he will come to us, as per the previous arrangement. He seems like an honourable sort of chap.

I'll say one more thing about this guy though, we won't sign him IMO, but if we had got him and the other players we have got, imagine this forward line for pace, skill and threat:

De Gea
Four--of--our--defenders
Matic---Pogba
Rashford---Griezmann---Martial
Lukaku

If he'd come, Pogba would be one step closer to his devilish plan of getting to play in the same team with his best mates. Cunning fecker.

i reckon his agent got wind of the Neymar deal, hence why he decided to stay at AM. He will go to Barca next year or in January

^^Agreed^^
I got the feeling that he was hinting at a Barcelona move a few months back.
Can't see Jose making a move for him now.

Why wouldn't he be moving to Barcelona this summer if that was the case? He could have just stayed at Athletico with the minimum of fuss and not signed a new contract if he had a move to Barca on his mind. Unless they feck up badly they are not going to let the transfer window close without having signed a replacement (or 3) for Neymar...

Perhaps he didn't forsee the departure of Neymar, but now he knows it would be a three of Suarez, Messi and himself.

As you say we will clearly not sign him this summer but I think we might go back next summer.

And Von, you don't think we will sign anyone, like ever :D

Hah! You got me  I do think he'll get some big offers next summer though.

If you ask me that would make us favourites for title. I think this side is just one world class attacker away from being a really good team and Griezmann could be that player.

You reckon they'll sign Dembele, Coutinho, and Griezmann??

Its a possibility...!
They have £200 from Neymar, and probably had a kitty of £150 so they might be able to fund it.

Dembele alone wipes out most of that £150m

I know he prefers Barca with Neymar gone but we could provide him with a more ambitious project. We've got a pretty big French speaking contingent here aka Pogba, Martial, Lukaku and so on. We've got a young team as well which would help him adjust easily. If he goes to Barca, he'll be expected to deliver from the get go which he obviously can. Here he'll be given time to perform and I think coming to the Premier league and then moving to La Liga afterwards would make him a much better player. He's only 20 years of age.... He could be here for 5 years and get his dream move to Barca then. By then, Messi would probably take a back step and he would be Messi's heir. If he goes to Barca now, he'll get paid peanuts as opposed to how much we'll pay him as well.
