I really hope Barca go for Greizmann in Jan or pay his buy out clause now. This would deter Dembele from moving there just yet.

I don't think we need him at this point. Lukaku will take on the mantle as the main goalscorer in the team and Mkhitaryan and Mata are both capable of playing as the second striker if we choose to play that way.

If we sign another forward it should be someone who's more of a wide threat.

Why? Because you think we'll have a chance of getting Dembele that way? Dream on.

If Greizmann goes to Barca, he would be filling in for Neymar. Why would Dembele want to move to Barca, he's ineffective playing in midfield like Iniesta's role. The same way Coutinho (if bought) won't fill Neymar's shoes but either Iniesta or Rakitic.

Secondly, Dembele not moving to Barcelona would make him available to other top teams which we are and we are in the market for a winger. I don't think he would want to move to Madrid as this would ruin his chances of playing for Barca some day. I know hindsight is 20-20 but a person can only dream. He would essentially be the missing puzzle along with a possible right back for Valencia

I think he is nailed on to come to us next summer if Barca don't go for him. He is clearly happy in Spain so they would provide stiff competition for his signature, for sure.

If this was our player we would really like what he did.. He stayed and will stay for one more year then we will try again.

Yes, we would like that he stayed loyal to us. But we'd also be fairly confident that next Summer, he will be equally as loyal.
AG made his choice. He loves Atletico, so good luck to him.
We need to buy player who want to play for MUFC, not Atletico (AG) or PSG (Di Maria).

If it weren't for the transfer ban he'd be a Jose player already. If he still wants him I think he will still sign for us. Probably next summer though. He'd be perfect for us playing off lukaku in a 4-2-3-1 linking with Mata/Mkhitaryan/Rashford and Martial... oh and our Pogba

If we can get the players of this ilk, then let's. It's a long old season and we're notorious on having injuries.

I thought it was a general consensus was that he stayed because of the ban? What's all this hate and snubbed stuff come about from?

I hate this 'he snubbed us', 'feck him he had his chance' stuff. I would have loved him here and I'm angry we missed out on him due to Atletico's stupidity but does no one appreciate his loyalty to his club?! If we got a transfer ban for some reason I'm sure we'd be pissed as feck if let's say Pogba fecked off to another club and we had no way of getting a replacement. In the day and age where loyalty is rare in football I admire what AG did for Atletico, even if it's very frustrating for us. It was obvious he wanted to sign for us but he clearly has a lot of respect for the club who have made him into a star. In return Atletico will let him go next summer, and I hope we go for him again. Lovely player

I'm way too cynical to believe in staying for loyalty to a club bit.
This move was put off for a reason we don't know about yet. (ie..could of been possible Bale/Ronaldo interest at the time or just plain old money issues )
The loyalty to Athletico is just a nice spin for the media / PR department.

He's a lovely player (no doubt) but where would you play him? In place of Mhiki.... sure but our main concern at the moment are the wings and Griezmann would be wasted on the wings.

Yes it's not the wings we should play him. He'd never accept that either. It's mhikis spot as the second striker that he'd be in for.

I think the midfield and attack won't be static. Matic will be a one man midfield when the team is in attack, backed up by the defenders (like Lindeloeaf). Central attack will consist of Pogba and second striker. Lukaku is good enough to operate on his own.

The problem lies in the fact that Mourinho won't always go for that formation when he comes against the Barcas, Madrids and Bayerns.... And then if we played a 4-3-3 during those times, what position would Griezmann play then.... I mean he would be too valuable to be on the bench and you can't drop Lukaku either.... so he would have to play on the wings which in my opinion, it wouldn't be his best position.

I can't see it either. It's Lukakus spot he'd take, if any at all.

Not happening this summer close thread.

Agreed. It's pointless even discussing it as every time this thread gets bumped I tend to click this thread in anticipation for news only to be let down.

I am too old and cynical to believe the "I didn't want to leave them in the lurch" cobblers. We will see when he moves to Barca in January or next summer, I am sure agents are always talking to one another, and I reckon he has held off to see what his options are. Frankly I wouldnt be surprised if he signed for Barca in this transfer window. Don't hate him, wouldn't blame him for choosing Barca over us.

The transfer was always dependant on Atleti's ban appeal though. If he was holding out to see other options he wouldn't have name dropped us publicly of his desire to join us.

Don Balon is a shite source and I would be very surprised if he moved this summer.

Whatever Don Balon says means the opposite is true. Of course he's staying at Atletico 100%.

This time next summer a few more Mbappe/Ousmanes will have emerged and they might be higher on Mourinhos list than Greizmann.

Because no player ever name drops United and their desire to join us for any other reason?

Our scouts need to be identifying these players right now and getting agreements in place. This is how we need to operate to beat the other clubs.

What other reason? He's one of the World's best players, he hardly needs United's name to generate interest. Pay rise? Wasn't there reports that he only signed a one year extension, with the same money?

Fact of the matter is Griezmann was eager to join, we were eager to sign him, but he respects Atleti and everything they did for him, so he didn't want to leave them without them being able to bring in a replacement. 100m or whatever is useless to Atleti if they can't spend it. He said as much himself on two different occasions I believe after the saga ended.

It's amazing how quickly people become RAWK like if someone dares not join the mighty Man Utd.
I agree lol. I dont thik he is exactly what Jose wants at this particular time, and if his transfer fee has doubled, we wont be in for. Depending how this season pans out will determine if we need him next summer. Too many square pegs is no good. We have an happy squad and although its only one game, this season seems very promising already.

Not sure about that. The fact that the number 7 shirt is free and his buyout clause returns to what it was suggests that there could be an agreement there...

here's hoping anyway...
People read too much into the number 7 thing. It's free because no-one has it, not because we're saving it for a signing 12 months away.

We've signed Lukaku, Lindelof and Matic, none of whom were ever candidates for it.

That's the whole point isn't it? It's free because we haven't signed anyone that plays that role - which implies that at some point we will. I'm sure the club are also aware of the legendary nature of that shirt and the marketing potential of it going to a real star player.

But also really I was just saying that the fact it is available might well be attractive to Griezmann.

Fair point.

It could be a draw for him, doesn't he idolise Beckham?

Apparently so, I would like to think that the idea of being United's number 7 still holds a unique appeal - especially if Becks was your hero. Ultimately though how we look thus season will probably have the biggest impact on whether he wants to come or not...more performances like the West Ham game should help!

I think him behind Lukaku next season could be something special.
Yeah Mhki is fine, but Mhki probably gets us top 4 / Challenge whereas Griezmann gets us League Titles and CL finals

He was eager to join us, but then didn't, conveniently just before Barca entered into the whole PSG Neymar debacle. Prior to that I suspect he would look at that front line of MSN and think he might struggle to dislodge one of them. However with Neymar gone you would have to think that he might be more drawn to staying in Spain, playing alongside Messi/Suarez, etc, for a club likely to challenge for all trophies.

My point has been that yes he probably wanted to join us, but at that point Barca would not have been an option. Now it could be.

I think we will sign this fella and move to a 352 with Lukaku and Rashford up top with Griezmann floating in front of Pogba and Matic. That would really nullify our lack of quality in our wide forwards. In the bigger games maybe we could see Griezmann and Lukaku up top and another midfielder stiffing up our midfield. We would need Shaw to come good and a centre back to step up or two more in these positions is much more feasible than buying a Bale or a Dembele.

Just before Neymar left? What? Rumours of PSG going in for Neymar didn't come out until ages after Griezmann announced he was staying.

:lol::lol: So true. It's as if for a player of his calibre he should feel in awe of our club. He's a world class player, there are a number of clubs on our level, clubs whose teams are a LOT better than us too.
